Well, today I bought the Macbook Pro 2.4. It looks and works great! I can understand how some people might not like the new design compared to the original Macbook Pro line and an argument might be that it merges all the Macbooks, offering no difference in design, only in specs.

But I like it.

Just not the price. What, is the recession over?

I'm not smitten, but don't think it's all that bad either. Kinda meh, in a 2005 HP sort of way. Not progressive or inspired design-wise, very safe. I know, you can only do so much with a laptop...but the PC manufacturers are doing some pretty impressive things with carbon fiber, for example. They really should have worked on reducing the bezel by about 50% and thus the footprint... I mean come on with the MBA we can understand because it's ultra-thin and squished, but they could have gone for a 12" Powerbook form-factor with this new MB, and still kept the full-size keyboard, ports, etc.

I'll say one thing about that Voodoo Envy they got right - the glass screen extends all the way to the edge (no lip like in the MB), and the bezel is smaller like the MB should have been.

I'll reserve final judgment until I see and handle one in the store, judging by the hype around the manufacturing process they should at least be very well put-together.

Yup, I'm completely with you. The Envy blows the current MB/MBP's out of the water designwise. Sad.

Ugly

My big gripe is the lack of a firewire port, but yeah, they look fugly to me too. It wouldn't be so bad if the keyboard wasn't black...

Apple did it, Made a ugly laptop Thread.

The ugliest thing I see here is the mangled title of this thread!

I am excited about this laptop. I love my Macbook -- it works great, is reasonably quick, looks good. However, I hate the construction of the thing. It just feels sort of squishy...it flexes and distorts when you pick it up. I've already had it in for cracking on the hand rests. It just doesn't feel solid and that kinda bugs me.

This new computer looks rock solid and everyone that has held the thing says that it is very tight. If that was the only thing new about it I would still love it.

have any of you seen the first iBook? Looks like someone dumped plastic over a children's compter

Hmmm, I'm surprised by all of the negativity. I think the new Macbooks are gorgeous, especially after having seen them in person. They look MUCH better than the old Macbooks. Just take a look at the pictures taken in the Sydney store where the employees are removing the old white Macbooks and replacing them with the new ones. The new laptops are beautiful! I do think the prices should've been at least 100 bucks cheaper, but with the education discount I'm not complaining. I've wanted a 13 inch aluminum Macbook for years and the new models are even better looking than I expected. Not to mention how incredibly sturdy and solid they feel compared to the previous Macbooks and Pros.

The last MBP looked like it was from the early 80's and that ugly latch.lol

The new ones are beautiful, I would rather have silver keys, but change is good, The MBA to me is perfect.

Although the plastic macbooks look nice, I've seen what 6 months of use does to the Blackbook finish and that certainly isn't pretty.

Industrial design isn't just about how it looks in the shop.

Having both a white penryn MacBook and a new aluminum MacBook, I feel the aluminum and black looks a bit more elegant. It definately takes some cues from the iPhone's design philosophy, which has proven succesful for apple so far.

This two-tone style is crap.
I appreciate your choice of words. I know a lot of folks like the black-on-silver, but I'm not one of them. The manufacturing process they’ve developed for these is actually very impressive, and the unibody frames look rock solid. How they managed to start off so well yet end up where they did is a mystery to me. I can see how they might have started going the old “expressing the nature of the materials” route, as in, “The case wants to be silver because its aluminum, but the keys want to look different because they’re made from plastic”, blah, blah, blah… But then they got lost somewhere along the way. Plastic can be any color it “wants” to, and the glass bits they used are clear, black, AND silver!?!?? Ah, well.

And what exactly is stopping them from making the keys out of aluminum instead of plastic in the first place? Gazillion dollar robot-sharks-with-lasers-on-their-heads high-tech machining factory and all…

I agree, the two-tone look is ugly. The black keyboard just kills the whole look.

A perfect macbook would be the one they just announced but all metal. AND MATTE DISPLAY (like the old MBP, but with new form factor)

A perfect MBP would be the above, but with better specs and larger obviously.

A perfect IMac would be exactly like the old cinema displays.

A perfect cinema display would be exactly the same as they were, maybe a little thinner.

Apple NEEDS to scratch the whole two-tone thing and go all metal
I’m writing you in on the ballot in three weeks for this one :)

If only there was an option for black anodised aluminium! ;)

Black display bezel, black keys, but silver aluminium case? That's like wearing a red tie with a green shirt!
Black anodized would have been so nice. Monochromatic is the way to go. I thought Mr. Ive had figured that one out…

I personally hate how it's multi-colored. It looks childish and unprofessional.
It also looks CONSUMER.

Indeed. I'd say all three models (the whitebook, the blackbook, and the old MBP) look classier than the modern MB/P. The MB/P looks like someone with a grey laptop popped out all the keys for black ones and painted the screen bezel to match. Not professional.
Again, consumer.

Black/silver isn't necessarily bad, but Jonathan Ive is giving me fits with what his design team has done since the MacBook Air (which I find attractive, but not their most attractive). After that, it's all gone downhill. I have found the iPhone 3G, iPod Nano, new iPod Touch, and now MB/P and LED Cinema Display to all have a kind of cheap consumer-y look. They don't look like Apple computers, they look like HPs. Eww.
Ah-ha… CHEAP, and consumer.

However, I think the MB's aren't quite as bad, even though they are carbon copies of the MBP's. Maybe b/c they're smaller and therefore have less ugly to show.
And, because they are the consumer notebook. Is there a pattern here?

... and what on earth were they thinking letting the Blackbook go, and keeping the white version? That just doesn't make any sense at all.
Crap… now I don’t know who I’m writing in on the ballot ;P
Yo Jony, I thought it was all aluminum and BLACK!??

I personally like the old MBP better.
Me too.

I can't believe they uglified both the MB and the MBP. If I were in the market for either--particularly the MBP--I'd get a refurbished model. The two tone thing just doesn't work.
Again, agreed. Penryn 2.5, ordered yesterday.

Think apple will at least change to aluminum keyboard?
Now THAT’S some change we can believe in! ;)

...

But unfortunately, no. We’re going to have to ride out this two tone hogwash over the next few years. Get used to it, or get refurb.

Weird. Of course, the people who dislike something are always more vocal, but I'm still amazed at the number of people who seem to dislike the new MacBook's and MacBook Pro's design.

I love the new design myself. I have the 2007 aluminium 24" iMac myself and really like the design. But frankly, from looking at the pictures (and I've always found Apple's products look tons better in real life than on pictures), I think the new MacBooks look even better than the iMacs.

Ordered a 2.4GHz model yesterday. (I definitely wanted the backlit keyboard.) It'll arrive here (I'm in Europe) around the 3rd or 4th of November. Can't wait!

I was going to get my gf a macbook for her birthday. I showed her the new ones as she was passing. She looked surprised and said "they're hideous" before walking on. Scratch that idea. I know – there usefuless would outweigh there aesthetic, but it's not the kind of reaction I was hoping for.

I use an new iMac and while it's not ugly, it's not appealing either. I hope Apple rethink this style in the next few years. Sooner the better.

I love the new Macbooks. They're the first laptop that I finally feel worthy of replacing my 12" PowerBook. In a few weeks, most of the people bashing them in here will love them. This happens with all new Apple products.

I think the new MacBooks look excellent. The photographs on Apple.com don't do them justice. The metal casing is definitely superior to plastic in terms of both looks and structure. Also, the black keys look incredibly nice. While I do agree that the black bezel was not completely necessary, it is far from hideous. In fact, it frames the screen in a pretty cool way. Overall, the design is an improvement.

I should probably mention that I am typing this on the new MacBook....

the old macbook was minimalist and elegant

the new macbook is ****ing fly

When I saw the new design on their site, the first thing that came to my mind was, "I can't believe Apple did this". So I checked the new features and stuff and I'm so jealous of the NVIDIA graphics (I'm a gamer) and the battery life is longer than the old MBs. *sighs*

I watched their video and I just can't help but say wow (I like the aluminum), though I hate seeing both colors on a Mac. Still, I think it's a great laptop once you get used to it. :)

Congrats to all the people who bought it! :D

Contrary to most everyone else's opinions - I LOVE the clamshell. I'm pretty sure it's my favorite Apple laptop ever. Despite how slow it is, I keep coming back to my clamshell iBook for everyday web surfing and chatting!

I was a bit skeptical at first, but this is a product you want to see in person before judging. I think it makes the old plastic macbook look a bit dated in comparison (and I like how the old macbooks look too).
