The only reason the whitebook's sold so much was because it was simply the cheapest apple notebook. It was a great student device. In terms of design, well i doubt it had anything to do with the amount it sold.

I didn't get a white macbook because i knew it would discolor in the future. having owned an ibook in the past it just wasn't something i wanted to experience again.

The new aluminum models look like a machine that will draw in a wider audience. Many of my friends (who are mac haters) actually love the look of this machine.

I didn't realize that was the only reason. Can you provide a link to prove that please?

I know many people who love the white one and its looks. I'm curious to know how you know the price was the only reason (your words) it sold.

The design of the whitebook is 1 reason why I got it. I really liked it a lot and now that my wife has it, soI still miss it from time to time.
I didn't buy it because it was the cheapest, and i was going to get a pro, but the whitebook fit my needs also. So I am 1 who does love the whitebook for it's looks.

I really like the new design MacBook, but I also love the look of the Ti-book. However, I will not allow myself to get one now because my current Blackbook works so well and I have no need to upgrade. I await Macworld 2009 and maybe spring/summer 2009 I'll buy myself a gift. Or maybe I just put the money away for my mini-cooper trust. My Honda is getting old.

I do agree that price was a big reason for macbook(white) sales, it is obvious that it was the cheapest fully functional apple computer. The mini was cheaper, but it doesnt have a screen or even keyboard/mouse bundled to its price.

Personally I know a lot of people that got the white macbook simply because it was the cheapest, not because they found its looks so compelling.

Lets keep in mind that it was the cheapest laptop computer that would offer a REAL OS X experience (I know about OS X in other computers, but it is not the same experience). I do find it pretty evident that its price was a big factor for its sales, probably more than its looks.

Same with ipod shuffle, some people buy it cause it is what suits their needs, some because it is the cheapest and it can afford.

I havent seen anyone saying that white/black macbooks design is awesome, i've heard such comments regarding the new aluminum designs. Some people would get the macbook for its 13" size, since 15" was too big for them.

In my case, I love the new design over the past one, I think aluminum provides a more serious look than white plastic that tends to get very very dirty, and for me I do move my laptop around with no case, aluminum so far has shown to be easier to clean.

Some people might hate the fact that now the "cheapest" apple computer shares the look with the higher end models, but they also raised the price for this product.

Apple design is evolving, and some people cant seem to get used to that idea, if you take a look around you will see that all the current designs are aluminum, imac, laptops, ipods (even touch has a aluminum frame on it, or at least my 1g touch looks like) and they are walking away from those plastics.

I personally believe that it was the right move, as the ibook/macbook has been made with white plastic for quite a while now, ever since the introduction of the ibook G4. Back then Apple bragged about the materials it was built with, thing that I dont recall they did with the macbooks as posssibly it was a way cheaper material than the one they used. I think the ibooks were said to be made from the same thing as some bullet proof vests, and it was considered shock resistant.

In my campus most people had the white macbook, lower end model, simply because of it is price, not because of its looks, of that I'm sure and so was the case in my house with 2 we got, it was within the budget and filled our needs, it was a combination of both, there wasnt a need to get PRO, but price was a big factor.

As for overall sales, price wasnt the only factor, but it was probably the biggest one, lets be realistic. It was the most affordable product they had, it is no wonder that it sold a lot, more than its design.

I dont recall appple showing off the design of the macbooks at all, not like this one at least.

I love the look and feel of the new one, metal wont be matched by plastic and for me it works and I love it. They have a pro look, and Im sure that most people find the design appealing more than the older one.

In my personal taste, I like the black bezel, and it doesnt bother me at all. I find the design pretty unique, I believe some sony laptops began to look like the white macbook.

Manuel: I think the previous Macbook looked awesome. Now you can say you heard someone say it. I think you will find a large number of people on here will say it.

There are many PC's that look like the new alu Macbook. They might not be as tough, but they look similar. I like the new one also, so it isn't a slap at that one.

Have looked at the new MacBook, was thinking of upgrading from my white MacBook, but a big no! still got the sharp edge, greatly overpriced, no firewire, and on seeing the screen I thought it was quite poor. I will now wait for Windows 7 next year and get a laptop that is priced more in line with todays market conditions.

So you have a white macbook and think the new ones have poor screens....fascinating. You do realize your screen is worse than the new ones right? But hey its no so bad now is it....since you're holding onto it for another year.

The MacBook screen complaints are overexaggerated....HIGHLY.

Actually the screen quality is the same. Yes the new one is brighter, but that is it. My friends new 2.0 alu Macbook screen is no better than mine. We even went to the Apple Store and compared 5 of them side by side. This issue has been beaten to death on here I agree, but most people came to my conclusion (now the new owners will come and attack).

If they are brighter, they are not the same. No?

The ability to brighten up a display is a huge draw for a lot of people...so one would conclude that the ability to be brighter = better.

The blacks are worse in the new one. I thought that was a common opinion around here. It was certainly to me when i compared them.

i hate the new macbook/macbook pro design.. the macbook air is really nice but the black with aluminum looks ugly.. wouldnt it be amazing if it had white keyboard like the aluminum imac keyboard?

Yes my white MacBook screen is really nothing special either. I have purchased a MSI Wind netbook for travelling in the last 4 weeks and the screen is "First class" and on a very low value NetBook, under a quarter of the cost of a macBook. It has opened my eyes as to whats out in the market place now, and at a realistic price.

Why do people like the white keyboard? They get really dirty as time passes....I think it looks better on a separate keyboard then it would on an entire unit laptop

I dont think Im acting like an jerk.....I just dont see it at all, and I dont think this is an opinion. Apple's designs were hideous, and thats part of the reason nobody wanted their computers in the past. The only design i would agree with is the all aluminum macbook pro vs the new one. I think the new design is fantastic on the small scale 13 inch, but it looks odd on the 15. (That is my opinion :p)

I completely agree. the new macbook looks super nice.

Does it really matter if the screen is better or worse?!? This is what the new Macbooks look like. This is the design direction Apple has chosen for the next generation, so it's going to be around for a few years.
When most people put the old and new MB side by side, they are going to think "oh the new MB screen looks much better" (granted it may be just because of the LEDs and extra brightness). There will be people who hate the Alu, and some who love it, just like there were when the previous gen MB came out. And we are definitely all entitled to our opinions...

I'm glad that it works for you. I think people who buy a Mac don't buy it just because of the screen. There are other cheaper options out there if all you want is a good screen.
What makes a realistic price? As long as there are people buying the Apple products at the current price, that's the price Apple is going to keep charging :)

LOL I didn't start the argument guy. I was responding. You should direct that question to the person who brought it up to begin with a few posts back.

I freaking LOVE the damn NEW Macbook for the most part. I also LOVE the previous one. It seems like the new owners of the new Macbook spend so much time tearing down the previous gen one. Is it insecurity or what. Thing is some of us don't worship the thing or think it is all that great like some. If people make wisebutt comments against the other gen then expect to get that in return. It is all about respect.

I never said the white and blackbooks are bad. I simply said people didnt buy them solely on their appearance.....and people using black/whitebooks shouldn't complain about the new macbooks screen.....Aside from those two points, its a known fact that the new aluminum books are an all-around upgrade, including aesthetically. (P.S. I Dont Have the new Aluminum Macbook, so no insecurities here)

This thread is about aesthetics, and thats what my initial post was formulated upon.....you brang this into the sales world with your comments about what the market prefers etc

Someone has to be an idiot to buy a computer based solely on looks. BTW I personally don't think the new one looks a good as the last gen.. So your last statement is an opinion and not a fact. Others on here have said the same thing. I understand the board is now made up of many new owners of the new macbook and with that comes new members (not directed at you) and that is good, but stating an opinion as a fact is kind of arrogant.

What this comes down to is bias. People defend what they own. You wouldnt even be posting in response to any of this if you werent using a blackbook right now.

......but my original point was this, NOW more than EVER in Apple's history, have people bought their laptops based on their design rather than anything else. It draws people in. Old macs didnt do that, and thats why I made my original post. Im sure theres millions of people that bought the Air or the new Alumbook for its looks and not for its functionality. Trust this.

You are right. Just like you. I do however, rag the Blackbook on its weaknesses all the time. I try to be objective and not a fanboy freak like some(again not directed at you).

You can't prove that can you? It has only been out for what, 5 weeks? I would wait until a few months before making those claims. I do think it will sell well because it has the lighted Apple on the back of the screen and having a Mac is the cool thing right now. The previous one did well and has a proven track record. I'm sure this one will also.

Im not making the claim primarily on the new notebooks. (Not enough data for that) I'm making the claim on the ipods, the iphone, the imac, the Air, the mac mini, the cinema displays and the macbook pro before it......these phones, mp3 players and notebooks were all first class in design compared to the competition..

I still believe in terms of sales, the iPod & iPhone brought their computer sales up more than the designs themselves. Believe what you will but the iPod single handedly saved Apple. People would say "wow these mp3 players and iphones work great and are built remarkably, theyre computers must be to" hook, line & sinker.

Now you are spinning what you originally implied. Oh well. Take care.
