People are complaining about not having access to a beta? Seriously grow up. Betas are for testing (ie not general) use. The Blizzard betas are even worse. The are essentially a lottery. With the people getting in to the Blizzard betas, bragging about it, selling beta keys for hundreds of dollars on ebay etc etc. A right ol mess.

Apple is just making a stand so the beta is used for it's intended purposes. Testing. I wish others like Blizzard would do the same. And make their betas far for all. So I applaud Apple here.

And those who cry "I want the new OS earlier to play with it".
You are the people this applies to. The Beta OS is for testing and not playing. Wait for the public release of it to play with it.

So I just upgraded to beta 4 (from my expired beta 3) and all is good so I don't think there's any truth in the fact that Apple is blocking peoples phones.

Seems a few people selling udid's got caught out and that timing has coincided with the previous beta's expiring - nothing else

I laugh at anyone this happened to.

Probably most of the devs that did this were crapware developers. Good riddance.

So if you return something to the grocery store and get a refund, you expect that it's okay to just continue to use it?

I was only using the old beta, its not like i was downloading newer versions, and its not like apple said, "ok. here's your refund, now here is how to get rid of the beta, or they should have done it right then and there, not wait like a month to do so.

Some of us are natural geeks and want to tinker with our device. I for one, like the feature of iOS 5 and want to try it out, but don't have $99 to throw down.

Trying out something (that is not free) without paying is stealing.

Pay the $99 and become a developer. Or wait till the public release. Don't go and steal it like you are advocating. If this rumour is true (hard to tell with M-R), then you are the people Apple are stopping. The thieves.

And anti thievery measures are always a good thing.

I was watching Captain America and I went to check the time and my phone was at the initial set up screen. I was like wtf? I went home and tried for 4 hours to either upgrade betas or revert to 4.2.10 (I'm on verizon) and had no luck with it. I tried everything I could find to do, but to no avail. My phone was officially stuck in DFU. fortunately I have Geek Squad Black Tie Protection on it (I work at Best Buy) and I was able to get my phone switched out today for a new one for free due to some "accidental" physical damage that happened to it. Yes, I had to literally break my phone physically in order to acquire a new one.

I was actually kind of relieved when I found out it was all Apple's doing because now I know there was nothing I could do about it.

That is crazy.

Did you damage your conscience at the same time?

It sounds like you have a problem with taking responsibility for your own actions.

I recently looked at an item for $139.99 at Best Buy. It was $99.99 at the Bed Bath and Beyond that was literally next door. I wonder if employee fraud is responsible for the delta. Sorry Best Buy, BB&B got my money.

The $100 is not to make a profit, but to discourage idiots from getting a developer account. If I was Apple, I'd charge $1k for the developer account.

Another solution would be to force people to pass a programming test.

Charge $1k for the developer account?! Are you serious? Do you know how many small and/or hobbyist iOS developers that would exclude? Many of them would not be able to afford that and would just move on to other platforms.

You can bet that there are a lot of developers that would not even regain that $1k through app sales.

Locked out under iOS 5 Beta 3 yesterday. Had to do a complete restore using Beta 4 to get it running again.

I was at work (as a Medic) when it happened. Major inconvenience as I rely on my phone for medication information, pages, and communications with other medical personnel. Had to do a restore from a PC at one of the stations which was a lot more of a pain than a Mac would have been.

I did also notice they added a warning message to the activation screen about allowing non-developers to utilize the software.

I hope that you pay more attention to warnings on medicines...

You are exactly the type of user who should not be running beta software. You're putting other people's lives at risk - for what?

Nobody's life at risk here; I do have backups for everything. Partner's phone for coms until mine was back online, etc. Like I said.. inconvenience.

I seem to be one of the few locked out on Beta 3. Haven't sold any activations, just my iPhone, my iPad, and my business partner's iPhone on the account. BTW the other two devices were running Beta 3 with no issues.

So it's Apple's fault that you can't read all over their site, that betas are NOT INTENDED TO BE INSTALLED ON PRIMARY DEVICES? No, it's your incompetence and inability to read.

I can't believe that you actually have the nerve to whine about something that is your OWN fault!

Doesn't matter. READ WHAT IT SAYS ON APPLE'S SITE. DON'T INSTALL BETAS ON YOUR PRIMARY DEVICE. OR IF YOU DO, DON'T B1TC4 ABOUT IT, LIKE YOU ARE HERE.

actually, my case is...

I joined the iOS developers' programme and have the iOS 5 beta 1 installed on my wife's iphone4 (hers is Beta1 and mine is beta4). Unfortunately, I am not awared of the expiry date of it and her iphone4 was deactivated yesterday.

The worst situation is, I bought the LION from Mac app store and have a 'CLEAN' install on my iMac. That means, I can't even restore my wife's iPhone now to retrieve any data from the iMac. She LOST ALL THE DATA!!!
(though the data is still in the phone, just can't get access to it or even backup)

It's really a case of emergency. Looking forward to see your suggestion and help.

At least, help me to back the data up before i do the restore...Orz

(i have mailed the support team from apple and hope there is a way to do the backup...)

"Consequently, the issue may simply be expiring early beta versions as we initially supposed."
Right. You mean the article was based on solid research and in its essence countered the original ******** claim?

Regardless of whether this was "right" or "wrong," I can tell you with certainty if I wanted to try a beta, I'd be prepared for an unexpected/unsatisfactory experience on some level. That's why as much as I want iOS 5, I'm not beta testing it, because I expect betas to have these types of restrictions and other unexpected behaviours.

i agree.

That's why i am no like the others, i am not blaming apple.

I m just asking (asking Apple as well), is there a way to backup the data from a deactivated device...cos my case is, have a clean install of LION on my iMac in the past two weeks time...

What a coincidence...launching of LION, and beta expiry...ruin all my phone data...:(

P.S. I am more than satisfy the performance of both Lion and iOS5 beta(s)...but the coincidence (accidence) "erase" all my phone backup...importance data inside...

Confused as to why you did a 'clean' install of Lion? The default install is that it simply upgrades, saving all your data. Are you saying that you don't have any backup whatsoever of the data on your iMac?

If that's the case, than this might be your last resort for help http://themarriagecounselingblog.com/marriage-counseling/

(iPhone/iPad needs a running iOS to sync and backup, with the beta expired, you effectively loose everything between the last backup and the time of deactivation. If you don't have a current backup your f*cked...)

I was making a general statement; not trying to single anyone out including yourself...that said, I'm not sure how much help I can be, but I am a jailbreaker/down/upgrader so maybe I can be a little bit.

On this clean Lion install has the device ever been synched with with it?

Of cos...not. U know, woman dont sync as frequent as man does. ^^

And she's keep blaming me now, why do a clean install, why help her to upgrade to beta...poor me.

I didn't say anywhere in my post that it was Apple's fault, just that it was an inconvenience. I only posted because other users stated they wanted to hear from anyone that had issues under Beta 3. These overreactive posts are why I tend to avoid these type of forums.

No. I just have all the datas backup except the ip4 one. I will definitely do it or simply help my wife upgrade to beta4 if I aware of the expiry deactivation.
Hope there is a way.

I hate to say it but things aren't looking good then. I definitely can't be any help in this case. I'd be very surprised if Apple would "re-activate" or have another fix lined up for you.

I do wish you good luck though. If they do pull a rabbit I'm sure many will be interested in your story.
