Ah I had this one and sold it after a year to get a MBP.

The killer feature was size/weight and zero noise as there was no fan inside.
You can get these features in an iPad Pro... at a similar price range... similar specs and size

This could be a reason that they discontinued the 12"

Just sold mine last week. That was well timed. Found I didn't use it since I got the iPad Pro. The iPad didn't replace my iMac by a long shot, but for a mobile computing platform, I didn't need anything more, and it was better in nearly every regard.

this is upsetting. i loved the idea of the 12" macbook but was waiting for a true refresh that never came. it very much seemed like a v1 product. i loved the footprint, but a single thunderbolt and the 480 webcam weren't enough ... and i refused to buy an apple laptop with a butterfly keyboard.

we just got rumors this week that apple is finally moving away from the butterfly keyboards back to scissor, so i thought we'd finally get a new 12" macbook with refreshed specs, scissor keyboard, 2 thunderbolt ports, an upgraded webcam, and hopefully a touch id sensor like the new air's. i was ready to buy that product, disappointing.

I still have an 11" Air, that I love, but iOS 13 is starting to eliminate some of the need I had for an ultraportable computer. The MacBook doesn't' comp well to an iPad Pro. Once you add in a keyboard case, the IPP gets expensive.

The MacBook was a great computer for those who prioritized weight over power. I feel that is a niche market. If I was on the road a lot, I'd really like it.

Only 2lbs. New air is almost 3

Except the Air is too heavy. The MacBook was meant to be ultraportable.

I think you're missing my point. What was the new Macbook should have been the Macbook Air. The Macbook Air was originally intended as the premium priced ultra portable model. The Macbook as originally intended was to be a general purpose budget model.

When Apple relaunched the Macbook. It's placement made no sense. Being thinner, lighter and more expensive than the Air. Being that it was newer than the Air. It simply should have been the new Macbook Air model. Bringing the 11" and 13" into one 12" model. Essentially that's what it was. Without being labeled Air. Suddenly the Air became the heavier budget model. A reversal of their original roles. Their names became ironic.

It would have made more sense to repackage the Macbook Airs of the time in a cheaper and thicker poly carbonate shell as Macbooks. Instead unveiling the 2015 Macbook as the new Macbook Air.

For quite a while it seemed as though the Macbook was the replacement of the Air. Without being named Macbook Air. As the Air remained a dilapidated model. Until the end of 2018. When they finally launched a new model.

Hate to see this small unit discontinued, but it's good that Apple is* trimming its bloated product line. My 2016 MacBook was plenty fast enough for what I needed to do. Traded it for the 2018 MBA, which is a bit heavier.

* "are" for our UK friends.

Looking back on it, the Macbook was a four year detour. The focus should have always been improving and iterating the wildly successful MacBook Air - Apple should have added a retina screen to that model years ago, for example

I don't see the 12" Macbook being replaced with an ARM version. If the line has been simplified to push you to a 13" Air as their entry level machine why go back and add a product between an iPad Pro and 13" entry level. Im on the lookout for sales on the 12" for sure. It was a nice machine.

I have a 12" MacBook and a 2018 15" MBP. The 12" is ideal for weekend trips and light workloads. The portability is incredible. I hope there's a comparably sized option in the future. Time to start looking for deals on a 12" 16GB...

The thing with the MacBook 12 inch was the keyboard went right up to the edge of the chassis. I liked that so much, it looked nice. Similar look as the 12-inch Powerbook.
Yeah, I think it's sad. I remember the first time I got my hands on one in an Apple Store, it seemed like an impossibly light, beautiful, aluminium butterfly. For a Mac old-timer, it was an amazingly sleek, miniaturised device. Keyboard aside, it's a really beautiful little computer.

11" Macbook Air is ( :( was) the ultimate portable laptop.
Don't lose hope, they still are!

I'm glad they did. I sure hope this is a sign that they will finally stop going deeper into the "thinner, underpowered, unrepairable and overpriced" rabbit hole. Apple, it's time to start making affordable, well-balanced computers again for those who like the Mac but aren't millionaires.

(Cursing the Apple non-product people)

Right when I was just about to buy one.

Thanks Apple. :(

I noticed that only one MacBook (rose gold) was on display at the local Apple Store last time I visited, two weeks ago. I should have figured they would do this.

So beautiful, but kiss its one port (which included the power supply I believe) goodbye and good-riddance. Two ports (the Air I believe) is not great (you'll probably still carry a USB-C adapter), but its alot better than one.

I think it's pretty obvious that Apple used the MacBook to arrive at the new MacBook Air. They are largely identical.

Mine's been a trooper for sure (original 2015 base model), but I was already considering something different when it comes time to upgrade.

Weight, noise and size make the Air a regular laptop, not an ultra portable.
And the fan noise is annoying.

Is a real shame Apple never gave the 12" MacBook the love it should have gotten.
With better keyboard and 2 ports it would have been the best daily travel Mac.
Even with it's drawbacks it is the best Mac I ever owned. And I owned high end MacBook Pros and cheese grater Mac Pro.

The Air is too big for me. At that size and weight I want more power as in a 13" MacBook Pro. The Air seems to me like the "poor man's Pro" for people who cannot afford it.
Is not really that portable.

And while I also own many iPads, they cannot replace a Mac for me. I need a more robust multi-window, multi-Spaces OS with support for a range of software, including MS Windows.
But I don't do movie editing or 3D renders, so I don't need the horsepower, while the absolute quietness and light weight are really amazing.

I was ready to buy the next model, was saving for it.
Since I cannot use iOS for my needs, and since the Air is too big/too under-powered for its weight, seems like Apple lost another customer...

Well done Apple! Good luck! :)

Morons. I was waiting for an updated version of it.
It was the only fan-less laptop they had and they killed it. Idiots.

Precisely what Steve Jobs warned us about. Non-product oriented bean counters in charge of our latest round of brutal product line killings. The Apple ecosystem suffers yet another casualty.

I wonder what’s next on their hit list? The Mac Mini?
