So ends the product line that saved the company.

I remember looking forward to each new Stevenote and any new iPod announcements. I guess the height of it all was 2005 when the Shuffle came out and the Nano replaced the Mini. I've got so many old iPods of so many styles lying around and only really use the classic thats in my car, but there is a special place in my tech heart for the line. I see the quantum leap in utility that the iPhone is, but I have no warmth for it.

Not surprised, I had a few different nano's back in the day, great little devices, very light.

Hah, yeah! I remember almost sending a few through the was or worrying I had misplaced it because they were so light. My second gen still lives on in my garage pumping out tunes on an old ipod speaker dock.

Lets just imagine sales were down to 5 million per year (1/3 of what they were in 2014)... At an average price of $100 per unit.

By discontinuing, Apple is cutting out 500 million in revenue.

For apple I guess that's chump change, but sometimes I wish instead of just cutting off a product, they'd give me a ring and be like "hey, you want to take this on?". Managing a half billion revenue product? Sure, why not!

I think partly because of the discontinuation of the shuffle and Nano was because of how dependent we are of our iPhones, and not many people were caring separate devices anymore. Bluetooth streaming from our iPhone to the AirPods or other devices ultimately made the experience More convenient.

Likely to free up internal resources (engineering costs, etc...) to work on other projects like VR and autonomous vehicles.

I use my Shuffle everyday when I work out. I don't want to take my phone to the gym (terrible idea). This decision makes me sad. Any Shuffle alternatives out there?

Am I missing something here? Does my apple watch act as a replacement?

I've been wanting to buy a new iPod nano for a couple years for my daughter. But the entry model was still selling for $150. The price hadn't lowered in something like 5 years. If they had lowered the price to $99 or below, I'm sure the sales would have increased

Shame. Still use my Nano for running and listening to my audiobooks in the car. Was wondering when they'd release an update Nano as it's starting to show its age interface-wise. I guess I'll need to look at other brands then for a compact media player.

RIP iPod. I still have 2 160GB classics running on occasion at home, but had a few nano's 10 years ago when I was a commuter to NYC on the LIRR. They were great little iPods.

Truly the end of an era.

If true, this is sad.
Still so much potential with a Nano with wifi or lte, but I guess the Watch is the new way to run with music.
