I suspect they'll be available in various stores and other channels for a while yet.

This is typically what happens when Apple discontinues products. It won't be available from their website, unless it's a refurbished device they are still selling. But for a new iPod Nano, it can remain in stores for months before third-party retailers liquidate any remaining stock.

This is the death of the iPod, really. The iPod touch is not a real iPod to me, it is just a stripped down iPhone without cellular.

It is kind of sad, my grandpa used to love his iPod classic, but it got stolen. Couldn’t get him to use the iPod touch.

So long...

Apple today removed the iPod nano and iPod shuffle from its website and online store around the world, suggesting the iconic portable media players may be discontinued. Apple continues to sell the iPod touch.

For now, it appears the iPod nano and iPod shuffle are still available to purchase at many Apple Stores and other resellers, but if the devices are indeed discontinued, then that may not be the case much longer. The latest iPod nano started at $149, while the iPod shuffle cost $49, in the United States.

Beyond new colors and storage capacities, Apple had last updated the iPod nano in October 2012 and the iPod shuffle in September 2010. Apple last updated the iPod touch in July 2015 with an 8-megapixel rear camera.

Apple introduced the iPod shuffle in January 2005, followed by the iPod nano in September 2005. In total, there were seven generations of the iPod nano, and four generations of the iPod shuffle.

iPod sales had been declining for several years. Apple reported 2.6 million iPods sold in the fourth quarter of 2014. Since then, Apple has grouped iPod sales under its "Other Products" category in earnings results. iPod sales peaked at 54.8 million in 2008, compared to 14.3 million in 2014.

iPod touch remains the last link to Apple's lineup of iconic portable media players, which late co-founder Steve Jobs first introduced in 2001. The success of the iPod helped Apple reestablish itself as one of the world's most successful technology companies after flirting with bankruptcy in the 1990s.

Could be making a single, Apple Music compatible iPod?

They'll be back after Apple has to time to redesign them without a headphone jack

That would possibly make the Nano and Shuffle possibly Bluetooth then. /S.

Honestly, if they were Bluetooth capable, I would be better off not carrying around my 7 Plus, as I would rather have the compact design of the Nano for working out. Even though my Apple Watch fills this category now.

That makes me so sad. The Nano was a hallmark iPod that represented Apple from long ago.

I always held out hope it would get a storage bump.

I wasn't an Apple user back when the Nano launched, but I remember it was the first Apple product that seriously impressed me and made me want to get Apple Stuff. RIP Nano!"
Same here, I always wanted to get Apple product but the iPod Nano that change everything for me. Since then I bought MacMini, MacBook, iMac, iPads and iPhones. But lately I've been looking for that feeling to keep me to stay with Apple. I can no longer justify the price and the product I'm getting from them. I might stay with the Macs for awhile and I hope Tim won't kill the Macs soon. If that would happen sooner, I'm done with Apple. The one really I miss with Apple is the ability to just walk-in to the store and they'll take care of you right away. Now it takes days and I have to make an appointment. The store gets crowded too, I guess because they're so popular now. The Apple experience is no longer the same lime the way it used to.

You answered your own question. The Apple Watch is the best iPod ever.

Hello, AoW. I don't own an Apple Watch (yet). Are you saying that a Bluetooth headset/Apple Watch combo is as good or better than an iPod?

Can you download a playlist of songs to it? Or, do you have to stream the music from your phone?

I really wanted to hold out until the next upgrade of the Apple Watch. But with the discontinuation of the iPod Shuffle and Nano, I may buy one of the smaller Series 2 watches now and then keep it as an iPod replacement once the Series 3 is released.

Loved my first gen Nano, even after I stepped on it after 2 weeks and destroyed most of the screen.

Fell in love with Macs in grade school then my first Apple purchase was the iPod photo (or something like that - it was the first iPod w/ a color screen). Have been hooked since. Sad day.. just another step towards discontinuing iPods all together.
The iPod Photo was my first of many iPods, but not my first Apple Product.

It is a great device, and still works now.

Makes no sense at all to me, the ipod touch and the iphone haven't the portability of an ipod shuffle or nano, if I'm going to run, nothing beats the convenience of a shuffle.
The ipod touch has always seemed useless to me, as big as an iphone, can do anything an iphone can but calling. At that point you buy an iphone...

Its a real shame that's for sure. Would be interested to know the sales figures for last year. If they were still 14.8 million in 2014 that's still a LOT of sales!

It's all well and good talking about the iPhone canibalising sales, but the iPhone is a premium, high cost device. It's also quite large so many people (such as myself) like the small factor or a shuffle or nano for exercising. Added to the fact that it's a good, cheap entry level device for kids. I think they should still retain one of the lines, unless it were selling in tiny number. But anything in the millions is not tiny by the standards of any normal company!

Just a question to anyone saying they use the shuffle at the gym. Why not put music on your Apple Watch ? Which would in fact be better because it's wireless. This is probably why Apple is doing it as well.

So is the Apple Watch!

And not much of a jump in price at the low end:

iPod Nano:
$199-$399

Apple Watch:
$269-$1,299

I think the $69 start price may be worth it.

EDIT:
Have to add the cost of BT Earbuds too: $120-$150

And I'm not sure if you have to have an iPhone to use the watch (it's in the System Requirements)...

So the plug-and play simplicity is lost at the expense of...um...expense.

I wish they had kept the last clickwheel Nano with the camera instead of making an iPod Touch Mini.
Shame Apple's product line is being trimmed down to practically nothing. Times were exciting when they had all kinds of quirky little things targeted towards different audiences.

Can we keep this post somewhere safe, for the next time someone complains Apple's product line is 'too large, like before Steve returned to Apple'.
