And we march ever closer to apple removing the lighting port entirely in the quest for a “wireless future” that nobody even wants.

Who are those people that don’t want a wireless device that doesn’t need wires???

Not that I don't want wireless but almost nothing yet is set up for wireless - even Apple hasn't been able to produce wireless pad. Almost no cars have wireless chargers, airports don't have wireless, airplanes, etc. The world isn't ready for wireless yet. Offering it as an option is great - you can put in what you want/need for wireless but you can still use your devices where wireless doesn't exist yet.

Please. USB port is now a liability considering the setting is now on by default to require authentication to use the connection.

I use one for a Tascam IXJ2 interface. That tiny connector is invaluable because the cheap knockoffs don’t pass audio through.
Looks like I’ll be getting a backup now.

Apple Stores need room on peg hooks for the forthcoming USB-C to Lightning adapters! :)

I sent a tip to MR about the in ear headphones with remote and mic that apple introduced in 2008 to replace the terrible iPod In Ear Headphones. The new In Ear Headphones was a $79 pair of in ear monitors with two separate drivers (dual armature) (woofer and a tweeter) It was suppose to ship in October but ended up shipping in late December 2008.

I own a pair. I’ve gone through 5 sets since 2008. Lost 1, and 4 eventually had the cables pull out (my fault, but it was covered under warranty)

Yikes - I need to go buy a couple.
I use one of these in my car still and likely will for a long time yet..
Same. Every time I think of upgrading my car’s audio system, I realize there are so many other things I’d rather spend money on, especially when it works perfectly well as is.

The 30-pin-to-lightning adapter is the only weak spot in the system, and I’ve used the same one since 2012. If I buy one or two more as backup, I’ll be set until I drive this Corolla into the ground.

Cue the handful of people outraged about this because they still have the 30 pin docking alarm clock they bought in 2010.

Or maybe the $45,000 car they bought in 2009? Replacing an alarm clock is a lot cheaper than buying a car.

A lot of cars from that era have hard-wired 30-pin connectors, that require the lightning connector to work with modern devices. The first iterations of A2DP Bluetooth audio streaming didn't take off in vehicles until 2009, and even then only about 10% of vehicles offered it as an option.

When you pull the harness it's not as "hardwired" as you'd think. Should be pretty easy to replace with a newer cable if people are so inclined, or they could replace the whole stereo for a better model. Companies can't be held at fault for everyone else' product design or we'd have all kinds of old tech lingering around...like me with my 8-tracks, how am I supposed to rock my Cars 8-track without a player in my car anymore?!

...and I've been having charging problems ever since. Lightning is hopeless, as a physical standard.
First I've heard a complaint about lightning specifically posing a problem. Sorry you're having issues with it. For me it's been worlds better than the 30 pin.

I'd love for Apple to just switch over to USB C, but I suspect that isn't going to happen, at least not on iPhones.

People need to ask them selfs how often they use their phones while being plugged in? Unless that problem is solved, I do not see Apple ever removing a charging port on iPhones and iPads. 9 out of 10 teenagers are tether to a wall outlet cause they must use their smart phones even when charging, so this would be a huge culture shock and big blow to Apple and iPhone. I for one, would not buy an iPhone if it didn't have a charging port.

Instead of spending $29 at the Apple Store, someone could spend $100 on a new wiring harness, or having someone rip apart their dash or center console to put a new cable in. Seems like overkill when a $29 adapter does the same thing.

FWIW, I solved this problem in my 2009 A4 years ago by getting the Tune2Air Bluetooth adapter for the factory-suppled 30-pin connector cable, since the MMI system will not work with Audi's MMI to Lightning cable. So I guess there isn't always a newer cable that will work.

If anyone still has a working, non frayed 30 pin cable from back then, they should get an award.

I require one (cable adapter version) for my 2001 & 2002 Camaros USA Spec PA11-GM45 adapters which use 30-pin -- was the best factory stereo <-> iPhone integration at the time...

Same here, I have to use it in my 2008 Saturn Sky with the USA Spec adapter.

I actually feel sorry for hotels that have to try to deal with changes in technology. I was in one the other day that had an iPod dock.

Then I pay my bill and stop caring.

Took me a long time to say goodbye to my iHome Alarm Clock I had bought for ny 3GS but used the adapter for many years up to the iPhone 8. Had good speakers for the Amazon Echo too.

It just was time to get rid of the eye sore

It’s not like the 30-pin connector was without problems. Older cables often had problems being properly fastened as the pigs would be weakened. And the plastic covering near the actual connector often exposed the internal wiring.
