Yeah I think they're just discontinuing the old ones and when a new Pro line comes they'll release a new keyboard for it.

I'm getting the feeling they're making a bigger distinction now between the Pro and consumer products like back in the day with iBooks and Powerbooks. Lighter/colorful line for the line that's more geared toward the every day consumer and then the silver/space grey "metallic" line for the Pro ones like with the iPhones and iPads.

I love my SG big old keyboard and mouse. I hope the new MX MBP comes in space grey and this is just the end of the none touchID keyboards.

For literally two minutes, if you plan to use it all day.

You should get phenomenal battery life out of it then. The "month long" battery life is when used basically every day.

Not really sure how that's related?
Can’t charge the mouse if the computer isn’t on, unless someone is a psycho and uses a plug to charge it.

Hasn’t used my computer in over a month. Needed to do something in an emergency. Mouse and keyboard were dead. Could use the keyboard because it wasn’t designed by a moron. Had to search for an old Microsoft mouse to use the computer.

Whats "psycho" bout that? There is a Lightning cord on my desk for charging the iPhone and iPad (for sure not connected to an USB port on any computer) and yes plugging in the mouse for a few minutes if needed is no prob (most of the time I keep it overnight once the low warning pops up.

Or... you know... turn the thing off.

If you're going to the point of turning the computer off, because you expect not to use it, why would you not also turn the mouse off, knowing it's battery powered?

Or would that be "psycho" too? I mean.. really? You can only ever charge USB devices by plugging them into a computer? I live in the ******* of a South East Asian country, and even here power strips with USB charging ports are easier to find than those without.

But hey congrats to you, for associating..... plugging a device that needs to charge, and doesn't need data, into a power-only USB port with... being a psycho. I hear there's a scene about that in the super secret directors special cut of The Shining where Jack terrorises his family by tying them up, and taping their eyes open, watching as he plugs a small electronic device into a power socket repeatedly. It's ****ing chilling I tell you.

Well, there goes waiting for the space grey compact keyboard. I generally like Apple's simplified way of doing things and holistic ecosystem, but I think they're going too far with this colour separation. I'm all up for pro features on pro machines at a pro price, but Apple visually paint-brushing people as "You're pro / rich / cool" is just a little sickening.

I mean, they're making it so people can be visually identified at a glance as having a cheaper product. Not "upon inspection", but at a glance. Kinda leaves a sour taste in my mouth. And of course that's not the official thing that they're doing, but c'mon...

As in, the direction that Apple is going with the colour of the consumer / pro line. Such as, the consumer M1 Mac mini that's Silver, and the rumours that the Mac mini Pro will be Space Grey. The iPhone 12 "dark option" being black, and the iPhone 12 Pro being Graphite. Etc. I think we can all safely agree that dark grey / graphite is "in" at the moment, from electronics to cars to window trims.

Obviously though, the base laptops are still available in silver and space grey, so it might just be on some products that Apple's doing this. Is a huge deal? No. But is it necessary for Apple to do consumer and pro models in different colours? No. I know a lot of regular Mac mini users were annoyed by them ditching the space grey, since they had already got the space grey keyboard and trackpad etc.

What about the rumour that the next next Mac Pro will have a breathable outer skin, much like aged cheese?

I dunno man, I can't keep up with the heady world of... window trims.

The car I bought 15 years ago was a dark gray. Are you telling me I was a trend setter a decade before it happened? 🙄

Seriously, wtf are you talking about? Who cares (besides you, obviously) if a cheaper product is black and a more expensive one is dark gray? Or more specifically, why do you care that it's now "obvious" to other people which one you have?

I don’t understand this at all. Apple has always differentiated different models by their look.

iBooks vs Powerbooks, MacBook vs MacBook Pro, iPad vs iPad Pro.... heck they even sold a solid gold Apple Watch.

This isn’t new, and Apple is not the only company who sells “premium” products with a look they think will appeal to people that might want to show off. How about every single car company? Would people pay top dollar for a Rolls Royce that looked like a Ford Fiesta? I think not...

I think having colorful iMacs at a low price is great. You can show off some color without having to buy a $5K iMac Pro. Bring back colorful laptops too; some people thought the iBooks looked like toys, but many others loved the colorful look.

Just my opinion, but as always there’s people that have to get salty / sarcastic / aggressive, unable to just simply have a normal conversation.

Not hard to keep up with window trims, they all started changing colour to dark grey a few years ago (in UK), and it was just a simple two-word example, along with others. Wasn’t really banging on about window trims was I?

There’s far, far more cars that are dark grey than 15 years ago, at least in UK. Again, just a one-word example. And no, not trying to say that you’re a trend setter, I’m aware than the colour existed 15 years ago, longer perhaps (/s), if that’s the point you’re trying to illustrate? If not, I’m unsure what point you’re making by saying that your car from 15 years ago was dark grey, I’m aware that Apple didn’t invent the colour and that products have been manufactured in that colour in the past.

You might want to pop over to the Mac mini section, a fair few people were disappointed that they only released it in silver, with them having space grey peripherals.

But like I said, not a huge deal, like almost all of the comments on this forum. We’re not curing cancer here, it’s just a place for casual banter isn’t it?

You suggested it's some universal truth that we all just implicitly agree about.

There’s far, far more cars that are dark grey than 15 years ago, at least in UK.

Um.. good? Bad? I don't know. I'm somewhat struggling to see how you see these things as related.

If you think Apple is making colour choices because of some kind of trend based on.. cars, and window trims, well more power to you I guess, but where do you get your space-grey aluminium foil for the hat?

Wait, you're telling me there are people on MR complaining about the aesthetics of an Apple product while giving zero consideration to the actual functionality? SAY IT AIN'T SO!

if that’s the point you’re trying to illustrate
No, I don't have a "point" to illustrate, that was called sarcasm mate. I know it goes over some people's heads.

I'm honestly still trying to work out why you (or anyone) would care that one product line is black and a different one is gray, or more specifically, why you (or anyone) care that other people will know what product you have based on that colour.

No we just know how to type.
Introducing the new Apple Magic Keyboard.

Who would ever buy that.

I mean. How could anyone ever expect to use that. What idiot would design or use that. It’s completely unusable...... it’s not some shade of dark gray!

Not far from my current keyboard. Not a Mac, an older logi ergonomic keyboard that has many of the letter keys wiped. So, no one else can type on it but me :D Not that they would need to use my computer but it happened once to ask a family member to search something for me while I was doing something else, and they said it's impossible, with so many letter keys completely blank LOL. A non-issue for me.

Wow this is a long thread about space grey and Apple's color schemes... It's not exactly Apple doing anything unprecedented. The almost-dead and bankrupt Apple of the late 90s rebooted the iMac under Steve Jobs with an interesting collection of candy color schemes and translucent cases, plus, also, of course, "shower curtain on acid"

They have often been "playful" -- insert rant here -- about their lower-end gear.

If you don't like, just get the ubiquitous silver...?

Any my G502 gaming mouse, which I've programmed for office work, provides far greater functionality than anything Apple has ever offered. I feel like I'm missing a hand when I try to use a Mac without it.
I'm not a gamer by any means, but I got a Logitech gaming mouse a couple years ago and it's incredible. I got a super plain G305 and have programmed the side buttons to ⌃ ← and → so I can switch desktops quickly. Works really well and because the setting is programmed into the mouse itself it carries over between Macs.

And overall, the difference in using a mouse with a first-class sensor like this is just HUGE. The precision just blows my mind. I'm able to put the cursor exactly where I want it, smoothly, every time. I've tried a million other mice and this is just night and day. Can't recommend it enough.

I thought the key-feel of the Logitech MX keyboard for Mac was terrible. Like there was oatmeal under the keys? And boot-option key presses with the MX keyboard didn’t work over Bluetooth. I couldn’t return mine fast enough.

I’m sure the MX mouse is fine, but it’s no trackpad. (As far as that goes, nobody has ever made a trackpad that’s the equal of the Apple trackpads.)
The K750 is better, but still feels soggy compared to the Magic Keyboard. It's not just about the MK having an Apple logo on it.

Just ordered the Space Gray Magic Keyboard and Mouse.

Apple's probably discontinuing them for much simpler reasons than people are citing here. They only made SG accessories for the iMac Pro. Just because they eventually sold them a la carte doesn't mean they were ever intended to sell in volume to non-iMP customers. So when they discontinued the iMP, and the only other iMacs they sold were silver, they had no reason to keep selling SG accessories.

I expect the new 27"/32" iMacs to have the same palette is the 24" models. We'll get a silver option, just like the current 27" iMacs (but with a white bezel), and we'll get the pastel options.
