On the high-end Mac mini, prices have dropped to $200 for the 512GB flash storage option and $600 for the 1TB flash storage option, and the same prices are available on both Mac Pro models, a savings of $100 for 512GB and $200 for 1TB.

Did they silently release also a quad-core Mac mini? Haven't seen a high-end model since the 2014 models took over.

The fact that a 3 year old computer still starts at $2999 and only comes with 256gb of flash storage, that's now slower than the MacBook Pro storage... is absurd.

I'm calling it: they're going to "quietly" upgrade the Mac Pro within a few months and barely make a big deal of it.

Or rather quietly discontinue it

Seriously what is the problem with this company. I think they need to make some serious changes. Meanwhile I'm just sitting here waiting for a good apple product to fit in with the workflow with my studio. There are so many others in the same boat as me. Just make a good powerful computer with ports for user ability and take my money!
Maybe apple just doesn't want customers like myself.

I don't think this is a move to throw anyone a crumb. This is something that a bean counter will do to reduce inventory. Now whether they want to reduce inventory to clear out their supply channels for the new machines coming, we can't know. It could just as easily be that they've guaranteed minimum unit numbers to their suppliers, but sales of current machines are plummeting (as everyone waits for new machines), and they want to clear out the warehouses that are stuffed with inventory. Either way, it makes more sense (IMHO) as the company responding to internal events, rather than anything to do with customers.

Personally I don't care anymore. By the end of 2017 I'm getting a small-form computer. If that's a new Mac Mini, all well and good. If not, I'll get an Intel NUC and slap a Linux variant on it, and move off Apple the same way I moved off Windows when Microsoft tried shoving Win10 down my throat. (I know, no one cares; I just wanted to get my ambivalence off my chest.)

The 2TB SSD upgrade for the top 15" MBP is +$1400
I built an i5, water cooled, 32GB DDR4, 500GB Samsung SSD, etc etc gaming PC for the same price.

"New Mac Pro storage prices"
I think you mean "Mac Pro's new storage prices". There is nothing new about the Mac Pro.
Well it goes a bit like "The newest Mac Pro Storage Prices Ever".

Question is will they or won't they update the Mac Pro?

When I first glanced at this post and saw the photo of the Mac Pro, I was like "YES! A Mac Pro rumor! Finally!
Alas, I was wrong. *Sigh...*
What the hell is going on with Apple? I think there's more to this then going into service business. I heard Rx 490 was suppose be on that nnmp....

I'm confused: the article mentions 2015 MacBook Pros. Does Apple still sell the older models? Where?

Can't tell if you're being sarcastic but if not...Well then joeypore let me tell you about this bridge I'd love to show it to you.

Seriously though..

Apple left the Pro Market 2 years ago when they ignored like 7 consecutive GPU releases effectively crippling a machine Pro's likely paid a fortune for at launch.

F Tim Cook and his ever so capable iPad.

I don't give stock tips but....SELL YOUR APPLE STOCK SELL IT ALL ;-)

The new desktop macs updates (mac mini/imac/mac pro) are imminent with the launch of the new touch bar keyboard

Is there actually a major difference between the most recent Xeon CPUs and what is in the Mac Pro currently? Is it possible they think that recent improvements have simply not been major enough to warrant a new release? Honest question, I have no idea what the Xeon roadmap is like.

Most obvious reasons to make the upgrade seem to be in the realm of I/O and storage. GPUs as well, but is there an actual professional process typically performed with a Mac Pro that is bottlenecked by the GPU?

You guys keep mixing "Pro" with "Hobbyist looking for the latest in everything". Actual professionals only care about what the product does for their workflow. If I am a professional what the hell do I care if there is some new tech out there that does not actually add any real value to my work?

Interesting anecdotes. I don't think I've had an Apple product fail in less than 4 years, but my anecdotes don't mean anything in this context either-- and nothing I'm saying has anything to do with Apple.

This all largely misses the point. Being a pro means managing your resources and finances around providing whatever product or service you provide.

If you are a true pro, then anything you spend on expenses or capital equipment such as a computer is tax deductible-- so everything is essentially half price (depending on your profitability and jurisdiction). If you can bill $100 an hour for your services then it better take less than half an hour to research, select, order, unpack, assemble, install and maintain a DIY computer for every $100 you save.

Warranty and support also allow you to smooth your cash flow and make more predictable investment decisions in your enterprise. Think of it as insurance or having a throat to choke-- either way it takes some of the risk and pressure off of your business.

If you do both your real job and build computers because you like to, then you have both a job and a hobby. If you're my vendor and I find out that you missed a deadline because of your hobby, you will get very little sympathy. Make sure you budget for that risk.

If, accounting for all of this, you can save more money building computers than you can doing whatever your shingle out front says you do, then you should stop doing that thing and go into business building computers.

People here use "pro" like it means "fast". Pros need performance, for sure, but that's only part of the formula. In the end what they need is productivity and predictability.

So you're ok with Apple's pitiful Pro offering then.

The finniest and the saddest thing is not what Apple is doing with prices or products they release, but is the fact that people accept it all the time and pay whatever Apple is asking. Many negative and surprised comments here, but Apple knows how loyal are their customers and will swallow everything that Apple will throw at them and be happy.
