Too many temporarily embarassed millionaires billionaires here.😩 If y'all weren't born on 3rd, chances are you'll never get in the millionaire billionaire club.

Spoken like my grandfather. This isn't a factory production line... there's a half dozen people who can replace some of these highly specific, key employees - and they're smart enough to know it.

You and I have no leverage. A lot of Apple employees are actively pursued in the Valley and can be employed the very next day at a competitor, sharing all of Apple's secret sauce.

Your Grandfather is correct.

This exactly. The Worker Rights folks here have to realize that everyone is replaceable. Everyone. If the disgruntled employees want to work from home, let them quit and work for another company. Apple will replace them. They are not as valuable as they (or some people here) think.
this flawed argument was used against everything workers have demanded throughout history. minimum wage, health/safety regulations, etc.
instead of blaming workers and frankly bootlicking the company, demand more from the latter as workers have done and are to thank for your rights as an employee today.

If they have so much leverage, why are they whining and begging publicly?

To a point only. We’re not going to go full on communist.

I work in a heavily unionized field, and the thing I've learned over the years is that the only leverage workers have over a company in the US is their feet. Large companies will respond only when they can no longer staff or retain the kind of talent they require.

How many employees does Apple have in Cupertino? What percentage are genuinely irreplaceable, and what percentage of those are actually ready to walk if Apple doesn't give in? I think that's really the only thing that'll force Apple's hand, and unfortunately I'm not sure the numbers that'll actually walk will be enough.

Right. People with actual leverage don’t act like this.

Boo boo poor babies I have been to work every single day of this so call pendemic perfect health and continue to be that way so lazy. Boys and girls it long overdue you can be replaced Tim just needs to step up

I seriously don’t understand this attitude some people have. I have been working every day since this started. Not physically being in the office, but still working. Where do people get the idea that working from home = lazy? I can barely listen to music or podcasts while I work since I’m so busy.

because they're mentally old and can't get with the times despite studies showing wfh = higher productivity

There are a number of companies who are recalling workers to the office (albeit some with a hybrid environment). Certainly some of them see productivity losses at their respective companies.
If those companies want to stick around they’ll eventually have to move with the times. Offices are expensive to run and the top talent want to work from home and they also work better from home. Work from home isn’t going to go away now, especially not fo programmers where we have countless cases that show working from home is more efficient and if you want to squeeze even more productivity than just that, you can move to a four day work week.

This definitely happened in my industry. They discovered employees sold their homes and moved to either their summer homes in other states or hours away from the city. Some even bought new homes.
So?

Exactly. there are two types who are crying about the WFH people. 1. Old dinosaurs who can't grasp the enitre concept. 2. Jealous people who never got a chance because they work at walmart, Mcdonalds or starbucks. Those are the people in our area who are crying about it. The provincial healthcare system here has not renewed leases on office space and are closing down old office buildings because of the pandemic. It proved that the old silly model of going to work does not work anymore, and people are much more productive in a comfortable quiet environment. My wife is busier now, and enjoys being home for work much more than going to an office listening to crap all day.

In which category is Tim Cook?

In which category is Tim Cook?
He's in a rare 3rd catagory...called greedy power hungry CEO's. The forward thinking ceo, not the typical bean counter timmy is, see's the benifit of their employees being happy and comfortable at work. The CEO like timmy are in the dinosaur catagory. Workers MUST be at the office, under our thumbs to make sure they don't "slack off". So he's actually a mixture of 1 and 3.

Why allegedly brilliant employees would even want to remain working for such a person remains a mystery.
