I actually prefer working in an office, however I understand why some people would prefer remote work.

My main worry is that if this becomes a trend in which a substantial percentage of the workforce works from home, we will see even more intrusion in our personal spaces through the implementation of policies of some kind.

Hmmm I find this funny, how different all the point of views here are.

A lot of people normally tend to see themselves, or their employments in general, being at a lower status than their employer. Hmm how to say… like „i must be grateful for being employed here and obey to all what they say„, like a herd thinking. Personally I don’t see workers, or myself as this. I always saw my employment as a service. I get money and the employee gets my service, but with time my or their requirements may change and we must re-negotiate to continue doing business, or simply quit doing business.

If there is a technical or critical reason to show up, no discussion - i show up, otherwise I don’t.

Personally I don’t side with Apple at this.
I would simply say that my requirement changed, and if they don’t want to re-negotiate, i would quit, simply as that. Apple is not the last Employer on earth. There are uncountable of other companies to do business with, but you also need to be self-confident.

I don't understand whining about costs. Its likely these Apple corporate employees, between salary, bonus and RSU's, are pulling in 7-figure W-2's easily. They can easily afford anything they want in the Bay Area.

They already spoke up and were told no. That's it. Continuing to bitch and whine and nag hoping they will eventually give in is just childish. Grown ass adults should know that they don't always get what they want.

Do you give up that easily, after asking for something once? That's sort of sad. A "adult" knows how to ask for what they want, stand up for their best interests, and not be shy of authority.

There are definitely some that likely joined during the pandemic! But also after you've had a taste of NOT commuting in the Bay Area it can be hard to go back. Dissenters probably don't already have homes in Cupertino + surrounding areas.
Sure, but what they should be doing is getting public transportation working, not just busses but regular, every 15 min, Caltrain from SF to Cupertino. Working public transportation is not some unachievable fantasy: New York, London, Paris, Tokyo, etc. all have it

I can sympathize with Apple wanting to keep employees on campus to minimize leaks.

My employer is losing a lot of IT employees since announcing that we will be returning to work in September. The IT folks are going to other companies that are allowing permanent work from home.
It’s a short path between realizing IT doesn’t need to be in the office to realizing it doesn’t need to be in the country…. If I was in IT, I’d be arguing strongly that the job needs to be onsite.

Some employees are not happy with this arrangement because it requires that they continue to live in the areas near Apple's campuses, which are expensive. Housing prices in Cupertino where Apple's two main campuses are located start at over $1 million.

This makes it sound cheaper than it is. The median is $2.7M, and there aren't any houses under $1.6M. So, yes, they start over $1M, but it's much more expensive than that.

You are way too sensible. You just be European.

my employer cannot replace me on the open market. I know it and they know it. So I’ll be WFH whenever TF I want.

some of our North American contributors may want to ponder on their lack of talent that makes them so disposable. LOL.

Apple should allow them to work from home until their position is replaced by an on-site, full time employee. Seems like a fair counter proposal.

This entitlement mindset is what happens in a Society when everyone gets a participation ribbon.

But that’s how this generation was raised. Helicopter parenting. You’re still a winner even when you’re a loser. You got a trophy just for participating. You don’t have to do, see, or hear anything you don’t want to. Your feelings matter and are what is most important, and, if something upsets you, you can go take refuge in your “safe space“. Cry and stomp your feet until you get what you want. You’re special and unique, just like a…snowflake.

You must not live here...

Using the simple and fairly accurate ADP income calculator, the monthly take home pay of someone making $115k annually is $5594/ mo.
Using a simple mortgage calculator that takes current market rates and assuming 20% down, your payment for a $1.6M home is $6245/ mo.

So no, the average person can-not afford "anything they want", we truly scrape by living in crappier apartments than in many other places in the US, all while paying 3-5x as much.

No, your tight crop makes it look worse than it is. 979 single family homes within 20 miles. Turn off the single family home filter and you could walk to work.

Don't mind the commute, here you go. Yes there are people that do exactly that daily, I kid you not. (87.5 miles to Apple campus)

Great news… you don’t have to stay. People are leaving that area and state in droves at a rate that hasn’t been seen before.

Honestly, me too. I love my colleagues, office "perks," getting out of the house, heck, I even like commuting.
What seriously bums me out is when my 22 mile commute takes me 3 hours.
Apple and many other companies have continually sprawled within the city, buying and leasing every office space available.
What would make more sense is leasing a building in a spiral outward from the headquarters. Then people could effectively live 10-40 miles away and work at their local office. Then when team functions need to occur, you can use your well oiled bus system to transport people to HQ for a few hours that day.

Well, I think everybody is replaceable, and I have my requirements. Sure thing, replacing somebody is not always an easy task, and of course I also make use of it. Wouldn’t put my pants down to any employer.

Does a $1.6M "starter home" sound good to you?

We know theres something wrong with the Bay Area when theres so little housing, an under $1M 1 bedroom condo is "affordable."
