Right, but the reward in this case would be funds towards health, not a Porsche 😁
Agreed, it's better to encourage good health than just rain candy from the sky. But I'm also in the "healthcare as human right" camp. Healthcare shouldn't be a reward for being employed or shackle an unhappy employee to a company.

If greater benefits are given to those with better health, those who have the greater need will pay the higher cost. If that greater need were solely due to a person's actions it would be one thing, but many health conditions are completely beyond a person's control. "You didn't exercise, so you'll have to pay a higher percentage of your congenital disease treatments" doesn't seem at all just to me.

People shouldn't need encouragement to do what's in their own best interest, but we do. The question is, what kind of encouragement? That's why I stressed commemoration over reward. As they say, "Good health is its own reward."

In an ideal world yes.

but most pple wouldn’t even if they knew it was good for them.

If adding a reward increases the chances of them doing so why not?

this is a bump in addition to the health care benefits they already get (which btw is insurance plus money into a health savings... I used mine to buy glasses).

Guessing most complainers don’t actually have jobs if they think companies give employees cash and gift cards like candy. 😂🤣

That explains why the shirts only come in size Small and Medium... 🤨
Fits perfectly...

From my perspective, things like t-shirts exist to commemorate participation, not reward it. "We did this good thing together, we achieved a goal, let's not forget it."

People are looking for some sort of proportionality... Companies give out t-shirts all the time for participating in single-day fitness events - 5K runs and such. Apple's thing happened to be a month-long event. Does that mean the "prize" should be 30 times as valuable?

Again, the answer is that these things aren't prizes. Fitness/good health is its own reward. A daily endorphin boost is pretty nice. There are also the social rewards of teaming up with co-workers and friendly competition with others (more endorphins).

Maybe some people were encouraged to get off their butts for a month and then sat right down again, but I'd guess for many others they're already active the other 11 months out of the year. I'm sure one of Apple's hopes is that this event will start some participants on a long-term habit. That's part of what the Activity app on Watch does - subtly encourages you to be active on a regular basis. It's one of the reasons people buy the Watch in the first place.

But yeah, we'd all like to get gold Porsches (well, maybe not - I wouldn't want to pay the sky-high insurance premiums that accompany such things). We'd also like to get inheritances from billionaire relatives we didn't know we had, find a winning lottery ticket on the street...

You seem like such a kind, honest, and astute person. Thank you for sharing, as I learned something I otherwise would not know. Your gentle kindness has brought me to joyful tears. Thank you so much <3

I see this remark a lot. I think it’s trying to be funny, just like every time it’s said about everother year.

I like 2020. I’ve gotten closer to my family. I spend more time with my pets. I have been buying less and getting used to a more basic lifestyle. I have seen people taking time to better understand public health. People are standing up for others.Sure, some bad things have happened, but bad things always happen.

Last time I remember every one talking about a crappy year was 2016, So I wouldn't say this happens every year.

Also not to get political, but I would say all the deaths, riots, and forest fires, makes it a worse year. You might be one of the lucky ones who hasn't had a close friend or relative die, but some aren't as lucky.

There’s a Medium I linked to listed at $100, but it might take a while for everyone to get theirs and decide if they want to resell it.
Definitely wait. Looks like my sister will just get a card this time around.

And even that that year was likely wasn't even in the same category of it all for the vast majority, unlike this year mostly is for the vast majority, at least in the overall sense.

i remember people hating on 2016, but also 2017, 2018, and 2019. Every year sucks. Every year has lots of deaths. We get fires every year. And riots frequently. I am not saying this year was good. I am saying people complain about all of them. I've lost people this year too, but I also lost them in previous years

Certainly there all all kinds of complaints about pretty much every year to different degrees from different people, depending on what they have experienced, but this year is certainly fairly different from that in terms of the degree to which it has affected people and the number of people it has affected. There have been other years with larger impact on larger number of people in the past as well, but it's certainly quite a ways of from applying like that to every year or even most years.

Actual damage doesn't matter. People hate on every year. That's my point.

Which is why people complain about ever year.
Different people about different years to different degrees.

If you ask pretty much anyone what they think of 2020 (either this year or at some point in the future) the vast majority almost right away will have fairly similar feelings about similar things, while if you ask about 2017 more than likely many won't even recall much about it right away or even after some thought, and the smaller number of those who might recall something might not necessarily recall similar things or have similar feelings and/or similar strength of those feelings about those things.

And in three years people will remember something f bad happened. Maybe they won’t remember what, but something.

You have to be an employee, first of all. Then you have to sign up for the challenge, and close all your rings for the duration of the event, which is usually a month. After that, you get the prize. 2017 was a shirt. 2018 & 2019 were watch bands, and this year is a shirt, as you see.

But what is "close all your rings". Does this require a daily iron man routine where you have to swim 2.4 miles then ride 112 miles then run a marathon, every day. Or is it easier will walking around the house for a few minutes do it? Seriously what is required? I assume it is not so hard to do if so many people did it.

you just... have to close your activity rings...

nnnnnope
That price is ridiculous. I admire his free market gusto, though.

It depends on how fit you are to begin with. The more fit you get, the harder it is to close all the rings every day.

Worth a shot, I guess. People have been wildly overpaying for some of the new-release Kobe gear from Nike.
