I use safari when I am on battery only and need to use it for a long time. Chrome chews through my battery on my late 2013 macbook retina.

I don't know what it is but my laptop runs hotter when using chrome.

When using safari it seems to last double the amount of time that chrome does on battery.

One thing I wish Safari could do is to pin tabs. I like to pin a few tabs that I know I keep open every day all day. I can't do that with safari.

There is one very important feature that others have, that for some reason Apple don't think is important. A simple prompt to choose where to download files. I hate automatically downloading without a prompt with a passion.

You can try right clicking on the download link and choose "download file as" or "save file as" then select your preferred location.

URL link alternative options Anywhere

We all know sites that work with Safari but not FF, or Chrome but not Safari, et cetera.

Is there a plug in, app or Mac OS 'Service' that will let me link from a URL in an email or pdf to an alternative Browser (other than the default) when I know the default won't handle the link?

Asking, basically, is there a service that lets me link to a browser other than the default browser?

Thanks

Feels too glossy, almost toy-like. I developed my internet browsing habits over the years around Firefox & it's extensions. Safari needs a much more attractive extensions market to attract traditional Chrome and Firefox users.

Are you able to click and drag the link onto a dock icon?
I've tried that with other things, but never a link.

- Ad Block Plus
- Google Dictionary
- Dont Track Me (Very important)
- Ad block for Youtube
- Google Documents extension
- World clock
- Flashcontrol

And a feature that makes the whole difference too - the fact you can see what window is playing music.

Safari is only snappier if you run it against other browsers without extensions, that many find obligatory.

This is bizarre.. Why would you use any Google products if you're using Ad Block?

Google's entire business model is based on gathering & selling your demographic info. Whenever you use Google Docs, they're spying on you.

The only option is to never use a Google product. Use DuckDuckGo, iWorks, Mail with your own IMAP server, etc..

Might as well run this all on your own mac server and never connect to the internet. Bad people are out there!

Google's business model is irrelevant to the browsing habits of average people. Google choosing to gather information doesn't make people magically enjoy seeing ads. On the other hand, the information they gather can be useful for them to provide services, which makes much more business sense than using it to 'spy' on their users.

Okay Apple, I'll give it another go. But it had better have proper full screen capabilities or I'm back to Chrome.

Looks beautiful?
It looks like ass and completely uncustomizable.
If someone is happy using firefox I doubt they would be happy using Safari

I really want to use Safari but I can't help but get frustrated when it always reloads pages when I swipe back.

In Chrome, it has no problem caching the previous page in ram so when I swipe back it's instant. With Safari, it shows a 'picture' of the last page and it has to reload every time and it takes between 3-5 seconds. Doesn't seem like much, but it gets annoying when i'm used to instant with Chrome.

Is there a way to avoid this? I've read that disabling the swipe between pages fixes this, but I don't want to do that because I like using that option in other areas.
How are you guys dealing with this? Am I the only one here?

You can't even sort bookmarks in Safari

There is a roundabout way of sorting bookmarks, but I rarely bother with it. This was one of my complaints about Safari when I first became a Mac user in 2009. In practice, it isn't as important as I thought it would be, but still is an embarrassing shortfall in design.

This is lame! Not the Apple I know. Why are they doing this, spammy popup stuff. ?

well,, at least we know the notification works in Apple's favor

Is this an incentive in the same way as iAds on iOS, now we'll have iAds on the desktop too ?

I hope not Apple :p for your sake... But, just as long as i never upgrade, and i won't, then :p to you all :D .. just as long at this crud stays out of Mavericks. But if it does, then Apple seriously better watch themselves.... Me and my iron fist will be ready.

Don't understand why 95% of Mac/iOS users would use anything other than Safari to be honest.

I prefer Chrome partly because I can lock the page zoom instead of having to constantly do it manually. I also like having my bookmarks synced across my Windows tablet, Windows PC and Android phone.

BTW, what happened to the Reader button?

----------

Yeah? I hit the edit button... zero option for sorting bookmarks alphabetically.

This. Why can't Apple add this option?

To those who say Safari is "snappier"

I have never had so much trouble with Safari as I have had with Yosemite. This will drive me to use Firefox exclusively. Safari has trouble just loading basic pages. It is slow as all get-out and not really useful.

I really think I should go back to Mavericks. The UI in Yosemite is UGLY, and it doesn't work anywhere near as good as Mavericks. And Safari is a pig in Yosemite.

Steve would have never let this be released to the public. Thank god I only put this on 1 of my 3 macs. The other two won't be updated until all this nonsense is fixed.

What's up with folder sorts?

I would love to use Safari more, but, I can't afford the time!

One of my pet peeves has always been that Safari developers don't seem to see the need to allow a one-click sort of all items in a folder. To put items into some sort of order that allows quick retrieval means that you have to move the items line-by-line-by line, rather than simply right-clicking on a folder and then selecting "sort by title" or some such. Chrome does it as does Firefox...is Apple too lazy or am I missing some hidden tweak?

Couldn't agree more, Safari on Yosemite is truly something else. It's also the most efficient and plays great with iOS devices, why even use those crap alternatives?

Because I expect my browsers to be functional and customizable, not "beautiful". I'm a power user and developer, and require a browser than fits my needs. Let me tinker with the software.

Firefox is by far the least RAM intensive browser with support for the largest add-on library available. It is also very fast and everything can be customized using about:config. Firefox also has the best native dev tools. That counts a lot in my book.

P.S. I am a former Chrome user and I agree that it is now a very bad browser. Huge RAM consumption, not energy efficient (can't beat Safari there, but FF is pretty close), lag when scrolling on a retina Mac, and sends your data to Google. No thanks, I would rather use the new Safari over Chrome.

Sorry Safari. . .

Firefox has Speed Dial.

Firefox has better ad elimination.

Safari lost the cool way it notified the user that a Top Sites had changed. Now Top Sites is just dumb, shows whatever the Web paged looked like the last time you were there a couple of weeks ago.

Firefox is easier to control. Bookmarks are easier to manage.

I only use Safari when I want to convert an article to PDF.

OMG, Firefox and Chrome both win their own benchmarks!

This is unfortunately the truth. Safari used to be a bit better at bookmark management but Apple neutered bookmarks in Mavericks. Apparently it's no better in Yosemite. Using the bookmarks manager feels like using unfinished software.

I find it very frustrating given that Safari can sync so nicely over iCloud. It's almost like Apple want users to only use a few bookmarks to lessen the load on their servers, so they intentionally make it hard to manage bookmarks.
