No matter how good Safari is, for those of us that need to use Windows machines at work, Chrome is the only good choice if you need to access common bookmarks and open pages from both machines...
Firefox Sync works fine as well (and is also supported by some iOS browsers such as iCab). Has better privacy than Chrome sync too since it encrypts your information before uploading.

Sorry, no sale

If speed is Safari 8's main selling point, I'm not interested. In the first place, the very stable 64-bit beta of Chromium is plenty fast, and anyway browser speed is only one of several factors that go into determining how quickly any given page loads. Second, since I believe the greatest thing about personal computing is the way it empowers the individual user, something in me rebels against Apple's one-size-fits-all design philosophy. Chromium gives me a wide variety of themes and allows me to choose such things as the fonts in which text displays, so I can create a personalized browsing environment rather than having to endure whatever Jony Ives & co. choose to give me. I. m. h. o. this kind of corporate authoritarianism is Apple's single worst feature. Third, Safari has a remarkably meager library of extensions. Above all, I rely on Speed Dial 2 for Chrom(ium). This is a vastly better alternative to Safari's Top Pages, which is visually beautiful but exceedingliy lame when it comes to performance. Moving to Safari, I'd lose a few other valuable functions delivered by extensions too. So, no thanks, I'll stick to what I'm using right now.

Ah, yeah good point - Firefox as well. I just don't like Firefox for whatever reason.

Safari's biggest annoyance for me is that after all these years and versions it still doesn't have a WHITELIST FOR THE POPUP BLOCKER! I've sent feedback to Apple dozens of times and asking, "Why is the popup blocker an all-or-nothing setting?" Never a response. Am I the only person who would like this option?

It's not just fast but the interface is incredible. I can't stand chrome's windows 3.1 looks and energy hogging ways. They did an awesome job on Safari. Duckduckgo built in! This thing rocks.

Oh yeah.. I can see the resemblance ..

For me, Safari would need:

1) The built-in Flash (it's pretty nice having that in Chrome and there's still a lot of Flash out there)
2) Cross-platform syncing (Android, Windows, iOS, OS X)
3) Extensions such as the utility I use for dealing with per-site passwords

I'm sure it's fine for most people out there though.

Safari really is amazing in Yosemite, I can't see myself going back to Chrome anytime soon. Could maybe do with a few slight improvements here and there but it really is a fast, easy to use browser.

Oh and the big factor, especially on my MacBook is the battery life, Chrome seems to eat away at the battery so fast compared to Safari.

Save As? For the LOVE of GOD!

I don't give a crap how fast Safari is, until they provide a simple Save As function, the browser will remain dead to me. Just another example of Apple being a bunch of dbags. Every browser in the world includes a Save As function, but nooooooooo, not Safari. F em....

Its great, but still get asked to install flash whenever I try to watch video. Really should be switching to HTML5 like mobile/ipad does.

I've always used Firefox because I do a lot of web development and I just have it setup the way I want with the extensions I want. But a few weeks ago I finally got fed up with all the performance issues and switched to Chrome. While it has better performance, it's still not great, and the way that the tabs compress annoys me (I have lots of tabs open for web development, don't ask). The 1Password extension also seems glitchy. I might try switching to Safari again once I get Yosemite up and running on my work iMac. I haven't thoroughly tested the apps I use on my home rMBP which has Yosemite. I did use Safari a lot back when I first got my rMBP because it was the only browser that supported the retina display. It was ok, but not as good as Firefox for primary web development. But at this point I'm willing to try everything. Bring back the Safari!

Safari isn't thin enough.

Safari needs more extension support and a GUI that doesn't look like I'm using an iPad.

The day I can install the NoScript and Calomel SSL extensions, I'll consider Safari as an alternative.

  • Adblocking
  • selecting anything on a webpage to instantly create a screenshot and upload it to imgur.com
  • Clicking on a .torrent link on any webpage and having it automatically uploaded to my servers torrent client
Safari has an extension for the first thing, adblocking. But those other two? I don't think it does.

And the final problem with Safari is I also use a Windows desktop. It does not sync bookmarks with Safari on my Mac or iPhone so I am more inclined to use Chrome on Windows, OS X and iOS so I get a seamless experience between devices.

What extension are you using for the torrent feature? Can you tell me where to get some info on setting this up? I'd love to do this.

What do people use Chrome extensions for? I never could understand, esp. since Safari has extension options.

- Ad Block Plus
- Google Dictionary
- Dont Track Me (Very important)
- Ad block for Youtube
- Google Documents extension
- World clock
- Flashcontrol

And a feature that makes the whole difference too - the fact you can see what window is playing music.

Safari is only snappier if you run it against other browsers without extensions, that many find obligatory.

Does the new safari allow me to decide which cookies (especially third party) to block, on a *site by site* basis? If not, then I'm sticking with Firefox.

Nope, you're not the only one. Ditto on granularity for cookie settings from sites and ad companies....

Safari 8 is really nice, but Chrome just seems to work better on most websites with html/java/flash applications running in them.

I've got to say, I'm one of those that switched back to Safari from chrome after many many years. For starters, the refresh "feature" in Safari where pages kept refreshing when hitting back was finally gone. The other things that brought me back where handoff and iCloud tabs between my other devices and of course that unbelievablably streamlined and efficient design that's left Chrone looking ancient overnight.

I too had been using Chrome since first public beta, but it really doesn't cooperate with the trackpad. The most common operation you do after 'scroll' is that "pinch-to-zoom" motion and it's ... not smooth in Chrome to say the least.

Meanwhile Safari has taken cues from Chrome, to the point that it actually has less chrome than Chrome, and feels lighter and snappier on top of that. That was the raison d'être for Chrome in the first place.

All modern browser owe a lot to Chrome for the evolution they've taken in the last few years. In many ways I regret switching from Chrome. Google needs to refocus a bit, and become more radical again, like they where when they launched.

The adblock extensions don't have full functionality either.

I used chrome on my mid 2007 MBP 15" for the last 2-3 years, and found my computer was crashing constantly with Chrome with nothing else even running.

I ordered a new mac last week so figured to just see what happens with Yosemite and Safari on the laptop after a friend mentioned he heard Chrome was awful for a lot of people on OS X - now my laptop is actually usable again.

Still picking up my new mac after work.

The handoff feature works from iOS Safari to Yosemite chrome.
I was alt+tab'ing when I had a page open on safari on my iPhone, and there was an extra chrome icon (my default browser) with the little iPhone icon on it. Selecting that, opened the page on chrome on Yosemite.
That was nifty. Didn't work every time though, so wasnt quite as seamless as other stuff.

There is one very important feature that others have, that for some reason Apple don't think is important. A simple prompt to choose where to download files. I hate automatically downloading without a prompt with a passion.

I guess it depends upon your definition of "better"...

If Safari could do the following, I'd consider switching:
  • favicons in bookmark bar (and not requiring text label)
  • bookmark syncing across platforms (Android/Windows/iOS/OSX)
  • Adblock Plus that actually works (the Safari extension seems to not be very good)

Yeah, it's actually the favicons in the bookmark bar that does it for me. I guess they're too 'ugly' and spoil the clean lines of Yosemite ;P

And pinning tabs. I kinda like that one too...
