As a San Jose resident, I’m not hearing about a massive spread of CV in Santa Clara county. Is this preventive on Apples part or is the news not carrying the reports?

The spreading began weeks ago. The growth is exponential. By the time you're hearing tons of reports, there are hundreds of times more cases than reported. The time to act is before that.

I think it is a mix of common sense (especially as Apple has so many people flying back and forth from China), erring on the side of caution until more is known, trying to keep the fear factor minimized, and a WHOLE LOT of potential liability mitigation.

Agreed, I’ve canceled two trips to South Korea in the last few weeks And rescheduled to a direct flight from San Francisco to Manila for the end of April. I run a relief organization, so this is part of what I do. However, I’m not planning on being unprepared either. My dad leads a L & D at a hospital just outside the Bay Area, they’ve seen one so far. I expect that the Bay Area will have increased rates simply because of the mass connection to Asia. Good thing the % are sill very small compared to the flu.

Engineering/Tech jobs lend themselves to working from home better than almost any other type of job. So good for Apple Employees. Meanwhile air pollution maps of the world show heavy air pollution over China once again indicating either "business as usual" or wanting to give the illusion of it. I hope the former. There is something strange about all of the hype and intense magnification of the CV outbreak by the MSM. What about the "regular" flu? I am guessing it has killed many more than CV.
Let's hope CV has peaked and the death rate will be going down. Reporting from ground zero here in Seattle where we are out of masks, hand sanitizer, bottled water, and....toilet paper?

My job is easy: retirement!

Meanwhile, in Seattle (not very far from me), the University of Washington and Seattle University have both canceled classes for today, and will start on-line teaching on Monday:

I wish there was an easy way for me to get the word out that I would be available for tutoring Mathematics students, as I have a MS degree in Mathematics. And I have taught before on a part-time basis at some community colleges.
So noted, any chance of helping Russia? Until now there’s only 2 confirmed cases, I suspect no-one dares to tell the great tzar there are more..

The thing that really throws me off for the Coronavirus thing is just how bad Wuhan is relative to the rest of China. It almost seems, dare I say, managed outside of Wuhan.

I just hope the rest of the world can get a handle on it. Singapore apparently has. South Korea appears closer to cracking how to manage the situation.

US? I dunno.

Me thinks it won't make much of a difference, eventually most people will get it (Heard/read somewhere 60% will get it), here we got our first case a week or 2 ago, back then it was carnival, one infected person (Ski holiday in Italy) celebrated carnival when he wasn't sick yet, went from 1 to 3, then 8 to 20, yesterday it doubled from 40 to about 80, today 128.

lol. People are so soft. Just go to work. If you get sick, you get sick. That's why our bodies have immune systems.

As others have said, if I responded to this post like I wanted to, I’d be banned for two weeks.

My father in law is healthy other than his reduced lung capacity after battling pneumonia 7 years ago. He’s one of those most susceptible to this new strain.

We don’t know how this thing will affect us should we get it. There’s been reports today suggesting it’s like SARS crossed with AIDS; when you get it, you never lose it, you just live with it.

There’s a report in yesterday’s Metro here in the UK that a 36 year old from Wuhan who’d been given the all clear, died 5 days into his recovery after relapsing and suffering respiratory issues.

There’s also suggestions it causes permanent damage and scarring to the lungs ... so yeah, go ahead and mock; just pray you don’t catch it.

Have you seen Italy?

No, what's strange and unusual is that people don't understand this.

1) there is no vaccine for covid-19, unlike the flu
2) covid-19 appears to be twice as contagious as a typical flu (on par with, for example, the spanish flu of 1918).
3) the lethality rate is at least as high as the flu (perhaps much higher, but let's put that aside).

So if it's more contagious than the flu, and if there's no vaccine you can use to protect yourself, it stands to reason that it has the potential to kill many more people than the flu because many more people are likely to catch it *unless* people take the extraordinary measures you object to the MSM suggesting.

And using the term "MSM" is a nonsensical use of terminology to try and compartmentalize media you don't agree with.

Seems most companies and locales are being reactive instead of proactive. Apple's corp is in the hotspot so they are finally making a shift. Most of the U.S. is not doing anything yet. Give in about 4 weeks and see what happens.

This should be the norm not a special thing. If you can perform your job from anywhere in the world, you shouldn't be required to commute to another place to do it. Less air pollution, less overhead for companies since they won't space for all of those people, less traffic accidents, employees can sleep a little later and hopefully be more productive. And yeah, less germs being spread too (not just the current corona germ of the month). So many advantages. Boggles my mind that so many people are forced to commute when they shouldn't need to.

This all seems over-hyped to me. Good rule of thumb is the very young, elderly and those with compromised immune systems may want to avoid area with large crowds.
Everyone should continue going about your business being mindful to wash your hands with soap and water frequently and avoid touching your face. If you are feeling unwell... then definitely stay home.

I guess there are 2 strategies /outcomes:
1. Do nothing, chances are there will be a pandemic with possible halt of all possible services due to illness. Like lack of hospital staff/bed but also police baker, taxi and so on. Because of the lack of care possible higher deathrates.
2. We try to stop it anyway we can. This could still result in 1. But could also spread/slow down the impact over several months.. with hopefully better outcomes. It could even possible stop the virus..

I’ve been involved in both situations.
When there are issues to be resolved, things are infinitely more efficient when done face-to-face. And many (including myself) just are not as productive working at home, all alone.

I’ll tell my staff in the hospital to stay at home?

Apple: Builds bajillion dollar spaceship campus.

Life: Ok, now everyone work from home.
