My favorite announcement today was from Capture One. Their beta released today officially supports Apple Silicon and Metal!
Hey miketcool,
Where did you get that "exciting" news? - I've been anticipating this for so long.
Thanks!

The new iMac is perfect for someone like my wife. She prefers laptops so she can take them upstairs/downstairs easily but also wanted a bigger display.
And thats the problem. Its a Mac Air laptop except in a not very portable form. Yes the screen is bigger. It's also a lot more expensive, and the processor and memory is literally no different.

I don't know why the M1 is tied to 8/16 GB memory, but it seems that there is some type of physical reason. 8 GB may be just fine, now. What I have found is that having memory can buy you a longer useful life for a desktop computer. I don't know if it will be fine when other computers get performance upgrades. And that's the crux of what I don't like: I DON'T KNOW. Because Apple isn't really explaining. So my experience from the late 70's on is that more memory has always been better. Maybe better isn't the right word- more memory has always been safer. And lacking any real information about the relationship between the M1 and memory and whether having more is useful or not I am going to go with the experience I have had- more memory can help mask the comparative slowdown of a processor that has been passed by other, newer and faster processors. Except with this iMac I can't get more memory, even if I am willing to buy it up front.

Yes I expected some type of computational performance bump. Its a desktop computer, not something that has to be easily portable. But it doesn't look like there is any performance advantage.

It seems that what is missed is that iPad OS now runs on the M1, does this mean it’s possible to run it on an M1 Mac and for Apple to permit macOS on an M1 iPad. What’s also telling is that it seems Apple maybe considering on not updating the iPad Pro for at least a couple years as the spec jump is ridiculous future proof.

iPad will now all receive the standard Ax chips used in an iPhone and AppleTV gets a couple generation Ax every two years.

Hardware upgrade cycle for AppleSilicon is directing to a 2 year vice less and will be marketed as environmental friendly.

M1 MacBook Air/Pro (entry) released late 2020 next possible update sometime 2022.

M1 iMac (entry) released 2021 next possible update late 2022/ early 2023.

M1 iPad Pro released 2021 next possible update 2023.

Ax iPad’s will see a yearly update if not 1.5 year update cycle.

iPhone annual update.

iPod Touch should be discontinued at this point.

It’s strange have a lot of thermal surface on an M1 iMac considering it’s an entry M1 MacBook Pro (due to fan and speakers) and a better camera. The external PSU decision relates to the thickness/thinness of the M1 iMac nothing more.

Expect the specs to double with “Pro” related devices. Maybe an M1X with 16/16 and 16/32 RAM option along with 2-4TB SSD. 4TB/2 USB4 for a total of 6 USB-C ports. Dual 6K monitors.

MacPro with AS 32/32 and 64/128 RAM option along with 8-12TB SSD. 6TB/2 USB4 for a total of 8 USB-C ports. Quad 6K monitors.

It seems Apple is holding back due to global chip shortages. But then why the many colour options.

Personally, my favorite part was the iPad Pro. It is literally god now. 5G, M1 CPU, 2TB capacity choice, Centerstage feature, and a lot more. I am also happy about the Airtags and the new redesigned podcasts app. But the iMac design is horrible. If they just upgraded the iMac and left it be, I would be perfectly fine with the new iMac. Apple Card Family seems like a pretty cool feature too. But it could be 9 and up, not 13 and up. And why is Apple making us wait another week for 14.5? Everyone thought the update would be released today.
It’s too expensive.

This was a surprisingly good keynote. Some big advances after years in some stagnant products. I'm not sure how they even did this since they seem to be taking the covid precautions seriously and campus always looks like a ghost town. But somehow they found time to make bigger changes than in the last decade.

There's nothing stopping Final Cut Pro X from being ultra-portable now, except the will to do it. Mouse control, external display option, it's all there. Dooo iiiiiiiit

The 24" iMac with a VESA mount would be a really portable desktop.

I simply don’t understand the distain about the AirTags. I think what Apple did was really unique with integrating it into a keychain, [which displaces the whole ‘You’re going to lose it]. I think this has a lot of potential, but I understand the skepticism of why does somebody need this product maybe at first glance, but I think long term, it will catch on for those who are complacent.

That's kinda the main problem with AirTags. If it came with a hole, then not including a band is fine because I can use it right out of the box. As it is currently designed, without a hole built into the AirTag for us to thread a ring or something through it, we can't use it right out of the box and it needs a band of some sort to work. It not coming with a default band is like buying an Apple Watch but in the box there's only the watch and you don't get any wristbands to go along to use the watch with.

I like the idea of it and I want it for my keys, but I will only wait till they fix this problem before I spend my money on it.

Apple is all about the profits, they no longer care about the consumer. I believe that Tim Cook is great at the business side, but the products all look like crap IMHO.

2 questions:

- Does the new iPad pro have the ability to boot Big Sur? That would be amazing if on the go and wanted a tablet sometimes and a computer for others

- Does the iMac support egpu or do I need to give up on that dream with apple silicon?
I think the eGPU is more of a MacOS question, and your best bet is to hope for news at WWDC regarding the next MacOS. It won’t be a system based limitation (iMac vs MacBook), but rather an OS implementation.

Just throwing it out there that a MacBook Air is spec’d like the iMac, and you can always have a display on a desk with a usb-c docking station. Best of both worlds for her.

That was one of their best events they've done in a long long time. I don't actually plan on buying anything in here other than probably airbags (but the biggest thing I want them for, aside from keys is glasses, so that doesn't solve everything yet) but it means that what I want (a better bigger iMac, and the 14 inch MacBook pro and maybe new MacBook airs with similar colors down the road) are probably coming. iPad's got even better, and apple TV finally got a good remote. Purple iPhone is nice too, though I'm fine with my SE. Switching to their silicon really seems to have added a spring to their step.

Oh yeah, and the new keyboards with touch id? nice job! (I'll still use my mechanical keyboard for long writing sessions, but it's nice to have everything look the same.
Apple announced airbags? They look any good?

Not for me. I’m swearing off big tech now. The high point for me was when Apple showed us that a powerful UNIX OS could be an everyday OS and just blew Windows away.

But I’m sick of lack of interoperability, walled gardens, lack of fixability and modularity, high prices, censorship of political views, aggressive App Store policies, reliance on the surveillance economy...

I only used Mac for Creative Cloud but now I work in education and not Professional design I’ll use Debian, which I‘ve used on anything but my main machine, full time.

Bye, Apple

You can definitely use them even if there is no hole.

I give you a couple of examples: the first place where I want to position an AirTag is my car (well hidden inside the vehicle of course).
The second one is in an internal pocket of my suitcase.

In both cases I don’t need any hole nor holder to do that.

Don’t get me wrong: I do believe that a hole on the AirTag would have been very useful but it’s not entirely true that without it you cannot use a tag.

Exciting?
1. iPad Pro - still can' t find a use case for an iPad
2. AirTags - never had an issue with losing things
3. iMac - an iPad on a stand - see #1
4. Purple iPhone - this one is cool
5. AppleTV - remote might be an improvement. A12 and HDMI 2.1 are okay, but not a big deal.
6. Podcasts, iOS, Apple card, etc. - ho hum

Mildly interesting, but certainly not "exciting"

The new entry-level iMac is ok, I guess... I actually I like the look of it, but they forgot a small Apple logo from the front.

Well, maybe they will sell stickers in Apple Stores, who knows? :)

Or they will bring back the Apple logo in the future with a never iteration or this will be an option for 100 $, haha ;)

A good portfolio of products, but for me disappointment at the iMac, which is clearly an entry level system at an entry level price rather than a powerhouse I'm looking for. No doubt there will be an M2 iMac to follow, which I will wait for.

Disappointed to see that they still went with this old iMac design of having this huge chin. I can see why they did it, cause they probably cant make it as thin and control the heat behind a screen properly and the refresh of the iMac was overdue, but then again it feels like a "forced" update like "there you have it, your new iMac, now be quiet" lol. Tbh I wouldnt buy it rn, when in 2-3 years they may come up with a more sophisticated engineered version that fits the contemporary design(edgeless) better.

They increased the 12.9 inch iPad Pro by $100. I don't think I'm gonna buy it anymore. I have a Mac already, I just can't justify a note taking tablet at that price point. I hope they come out with a 12.9 inch Air, just remove the M1 and use a regular A14X.

This round up is so much better than the actual event. I recommend everyone watch this roundup.

I disliked the actual event (how it was done, not the content, ie products announced) for so many reasons. None of which I can say here unfortunately. My hands have been forcably tied on this matter.
