really hoping for a MacBook Air refresh! Given the mbp13 will be a dull update my choice is £2100 on the MBP14 or see whether there is the air

Apple Event Announced for March 8: 'Peek Performance'

Well for one I guess retail staff generally speak to and see local people in the local area, an Apple event at Steve Jobs theatre will mean hundreds of journalists from around the world flying into the area.
Plus last I heard it's being reported 15,000 Americans are dying from Covid every week? But I don't live in the US so don't watch your new channels or follow the Covid stats.
Plus I think with the current war it may be better to not invite international journalists to travel?

I think Apples done a pretty good job with its virtual events though, pretty slick graphics and all.

I could be wrong, but I still think Apple won't announce M2-chips until they've finished rolling out the M1 Pro / Max line-up with the high-end Mac Mini and iMac (Pro). Even though yes, M1 Pro and Max chips should still perform "better" than an M2, that's multi-core, not necessarily single-core. I just think it's an awkward and confusing marketing message to have M2s out before all the M1 Pro / Max line-up is released.
Given that, I still think it's more likely this release is:
- iPhone SE
- Refreshed iPad Air (with A15 chip, not M1, + Centerstage)
- Maybe refreshed M1 iPad Pro 11" with Mini-LED
- High-end Mac Mini (with M1 Pro / Max)
- Maybe even 27"+ iMac (Pro) with M1 Pro / Max
And Macbook Airs / low-end 13" MBP with M2 chips aren't until later in the year.
Given that, I still think it's more likely this release is:

No. Which is why it won‘t be a spec bump for three products.
the 'spec bump' for the minor products will be done in minutes.
This seems to be shaping up to be more like a pro Mac event with mention of some minor spec updates on some products.
Regardless of whether/how often they intend to do these prerecorded events going forward even absent COVID concerns — no more live mishaps like Craig Federighi demoing Face ID on the iPhone X or the entirety of Jimmy Iovine talking at the WWDC 2015 keynote — they have probably had parts or all of it recorded for quite some time now. Might as well get it out the door.
I am selfishly hoping the next-gen MacBook Airs don't have mini-LED screens. After sinking vast fortunes into a MacBook Pro, I'd be hit with instant buyer's remorse.

I do not think that there will be an M2 MacBook Pro at this event, as it will confuse the product line a lot. I think we will be getting an M2 MacBook Air, which would be a lot more exciting than... that "pro" machine.
Apple today announced that it will be holding its first event of 2022 on Tuesday, March 8 at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time at the Steve Jobs Theater on the Apple Park campus in Cupertino, California.

As with the 2021 events, Apple's first event of 2022 will continue to be a digital-only gathering with no members of the media invited to attend in person due to the ongoing public health crisis.
We've already heard quite a few rumors about what we can expect to see at the March 8 event. Apple is expected to announce the next-generation version of the iPhone SE, a revamped iPad Air, and at least one Mac with an Apple silicon chip, which could be the Mac mini, the 13-inch MacBook Pro, or both.
The third-generation iPhone SE will look similar to the second-generation model available now, and no design changes are expected. It will continue to feature thick bezels and a Touch ID Home button, but it will include an updated A-series chip, likely the A15, and faster 5G connectivity. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has said it will be Apple's most affordable 5G iPhone.
Apple isn't going to make any design changes to the next-generation iPad Air either, but it too will get a faster chip and 5G connectivity. It could also be updated with a new FaceTime camera that supports Center Stage, the feature that keeps you in frame even as you move around the room.
As for Macs, Apple is rumored to be planning to release a higher-end version of the Mac mini with an overhauled design and M1 Pro and M1 Max chips. The new Mac mini will replace the current Intel Mac mini options, and it could come at Apple's March event.
The final device rumored for March 8 is an updated version of the 13-inch MacBook Pro, which is said to be equipped with an M2 chip, the successor to the M1 chip. The MacBook Pro will look identical to the current 13-inch model, and it will be a lower-end version of the 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pro models that have M1 Pro and M1 Max chips.
The M2 chip will feature the same 8-core CPU as the M1, but speed and efficiency improvements are expected, as are GPU improvements. Rumors suggest the M2 chip will be available in 9 and 10-core GPU options, up from the 7 and 8-core GPU options available with the original M1 chip.

I'm not sure what I'm hoping for.
On one hand, I hope that a new (reasonably priced) display comes along with the redesigned Mini so that I can dock my work PC at my desk when I'm working from home. I've also been eying the M1 iMacs, but that still wouldn't solve the docking issue. On the other hand, I've been saving my pennies for whatever the next iMac pro will be, which doesn't seem like its coming soon. I could also just get a 14-inch MBP and call it done. I've almost pulled the trigger several times.
No matter how I look at it, my 2013 iMac is very long in the tooth and I'm getting tired of waiting.
