If you want an expandable Mac, you need to go for their hi-end workstation. And what is the most popular form-factor in desktop-computers at this moment? It's single-socket expandable minitower.
Correlation is not causation. That style is not popular for its virtues (expandability), but for its price. That's the long and short of it, especially since notebook sales dwarf minitower sales, and if you cut out the sub-$800 range, you're left with a very small number indeed.

If manufacturers made a computer that had all the expandability of a DVD player with a RAM slot, but it was cheaper than the basic minitower configuration, it would be the most popular. You can confirm this easily based on the discard vs. upgrade rate of computers. People in general just buy new ones when a simple RAM or hard drive upgrade isn't enough. "System builders" are the niche market.

Expandability is a non-starter for 95% of computer users now. My early PCs aged very quickly and needed regular tweaks for connectivity and storage. I'm now using a 4 year old Windows laptop that wasn't top end when i bought it and it's still fine. There's nothing i've needed to add to it that wasn't easiest done via USB. The one single thing that is worth upgrading is memory but other than that i think Apple's approach of computer as appliance is the right one. Likewise using laptop parts almost everywhere which keeps things quiet and cool. Unless you're a gamer or video pro you no longer need the highest performance parts (which need noisy cooling.).

I'm hoping for a mac mini update to add to my 20" Dell monitor as my first stage in making the leap to mac. If there's no mini (or the iMac is both on the money and irresistable) it'll be an iMac. Macbook to follow later.

At this stage i'd be hoping for a voucher - will almost certainly hold back until
they do give one otherwise.

Whoa, the apple refurb store is PACKED with computers right now. That is a good sign for next week. Unload the older, old stock before prices drops if new hardware is coming. I can dream.

Delivery times

As they took quite a bit to update the lines, IMac and Mac mini, if they are updated next week, I hope the delivery times will be better. May be, instead of rushing the announcement and making everyone wait 4 to 6 weeks for the new product, they amassed some stock so they can deliver quickly. I hope.

Anyway I just want to lust after the new stuff. I am happy with my Macbook :)

Picture on new iMac?

My mate sent me through this this morning, claiming it's the new iMac. I have my doubts, doesn't look right to me, but I thought I'd share it anyway.

Cheers

OMG that thing is horrible.

Not to mention that it surfaces every time there's a new computer in the works. Just like that transparent abomination.

I'm a newbie round here and never seen this before, so I apologise,; I'll kick my mates ar£se! :)

Steve always looks disappointed in Apple Town hall. He doesn't get the huge 'rock-star' effect there :p

What annoyed me is that an intel macmini and leather ipod cases are not fun, an ipod hi-fi isnt really the most fun thing in the world either.... Why did they need an evnet for three small products.

Hopefully apple have leanrt from the thrashing they recived on the net about that event and this one on the 7th will be brilliant....

remeber original ipod was announced at the town hall place...

Here's hoping for a considerable update to .Mac -- something to get excited about... along with more storage. :)

BlackBook discounted $550 down to $949 in the refurbished Apple store. I have this sensationally sick feeling in my stomach for my two month old BlackBook....

If that is the case, why do minitower outsell AIO's by a large margin, even when they are priced similarly? And fact of the matter is that Apple does not offer a suitable computer for a huge number of consumers. they are then forced to consider Mac Pro for their needs, while that machine is not what they need.

there are already such machines out there and they are not the most popular. Not by a long shot.

Yep they are. And that still doesn't change the fact that minitower is the predominant form-factor out there, even though there are cheaper alternatives available. Hell, Mac Mini is cheaper than large number of minitowers, yet it's not a huge success that dominates the industry, now is it?

yuk... that thing is disgusting. i could come up with something better than that :p and ive never used photoshop!!! no i couldnt, but if that is the new imac, apple will be going dooooown

It has already been confirmed multiple times that there will be macmini no more.

There has been NO confirmation about discontinuing of the Mini. There has been a bunch of rumors, but that's it. Until Apple tells us what the future of the Mini looks like, it has NOT been confirmed. And has Apple told us what they plan to do with the Mini? I believe the answer starts with a "n" and ends in "o".

Killing the Mini would be unfortunate. Apple needs a low cost Mac. $1,000 is hardly a low price-point. I assume the mini is not selling as well lately because it is ridiculously over-priced for its current configuration.

The Mac Mini is focused for their needs. Here's to an update on the 7th to the mini! :)
