I think there will be a boost if the new computers are so cool looking that they get a lot of press....

You know, I've heard a lot of various people say things like "I'm waiting for a new iMac" or "I'm waiting until Leopard is released" before they buy anything over the past year... does anyone think that the number of Mac sales will be significantly higher after both are released or do you think the number of people waiting isn't high enough to produce a ridiculously great selling quarter?
That depends on the price points. If, as rumored, the Mini and the 17" iMaC models are discontinued, then sales will likely drop, unless Apple is very aggressive with its pricing with the remaining models, or something completely new and affordable is introduced.

I agree. As matticus008 mentioned above, most people spend about $600 on a computer these days and rarely over $800.

I think the total number of Mac units sold will drop if Apple drops the mini and the 17" iMac. But I don't think Apple will discontinue them without offering something in that $600-800 range.

For that reason, I hold on to the hope that a new Mac besides just the iMac will be introduced next Tuesday.

Apple expects a "product transition" to affect earnings in the current quarter. Perhaps a new iMac with very aggressive pricing is what this means. How about a 20" base model for $999? If that happened, perhaps Apple could drop the mini and just forget about the $600-800 market. It's not likely though.

I'll be interested to find out what this "product transition" is.

new Mac vs PC commercials?

maybe mac walking out looking suave and PC comes out in a cheesy pimp suite and says "hi I'm a home built PC... like my new case?"

[Mac dressed in stylish vintage t-shirt and blazer, vintage jeans and sneakers]
[PC wearing only a clear shower curtain; his crotch is blurred out]

Mac: Hi, I'm a Mac.

PC: And I'm a home-built PC! How do you like my new see-through case?

Mac: Oh, no, yeah, that's a cool outfit.

PC: Yeah, it's got all the bells and whistles. Check out these cool LED lights that glow in the dark.

[PC turns around to show reflective tape glued to the back of his shower curtain]

Mac: No, uh, yeah, that's great. Must be useful at night.

PC: Especially when I'm hitting the club, right? I get all the ladies. Why, what are you wearing?

Mac: [Looks at self sheepishly] Oh you know, I like to keep it simple. Clean lines. Nothing fancy. Y'know, uh... do you really think the ladies want to see your, uh... [Gestures at PC's crotch] parts?

PC: Why wouldn't they? I've got nothing to hide.

[Beautiful woman walks onscreen]

PC: Oh! Excuse me ma'am, would you like to have a look at my new hard drive? It can drive... hard... pretty fast...

[Girl walks past PC and greets Mac]

Mac: Oh, [laughs], hi there...

[Girl and Mac continue in conversation]

PC: [Looks at Mac and woman disapprovingly and observes himself] I should get one of those Intel Inside stickers...

Nice one. I was even hearing John Hodgman's and Justin Long's voices in that one. :p

Yes, I think price point will be the biggest factor. If only Vmware and Parallels could get their act together and come up with a stable release that will allow Windows users to migrate easily I think Apple will profit immensely. There are so many sub-$1000 PC's now for Vista and as most have found out they don't have the hardware specs to get a good Vista experience.

I need a MAC, any mac

3 years ago me and my friend both bought laptops, I got a gateway and he got an ibook. At first all I did was use his, mine was so boring, but then I couldn't play the games I liked except for warcraft 3, so i left the OS X world. My friend upgraded to a powerbook (damn him), I got a relatively cheap desktop with an ATI card.

But now Microsoft launched this beast, wich I can't run on any of my machines...so I'm ditching MS, they forced me too, as they are doing to everyone, if people need to buy a new computer for a new OS then it might as well be the newest OS wich will be Leopard.:apple:

I will buy 2 macs with my hard earned money , a mobile one and a desktop.

But I would preffer a slightly bigger mac mini, with space for 2 hard drives and the option for a graphics card. This I think would make half the world switch in no time, priced around $600 (basic), graphics card and doble hdd model around $800-900 (and oh yes! with the new mac keyboard).

There seems to be a fair amount of speculation with regards to what's going to happen with the low-end of the product rannge. When Apple announced their last quarter sales and profits, etc, did anyone get a glimpse as to how the sales were split? Would be quite interesting, would it not?

I think that if they were to ditch the Mini and the 17" iMac in favour of the more expensive machines, it would only be because they see more profit in single units on the more expensive machines (Octo Mac Pro = lots of margin, Mac Mini = next to none) - it's just a guess on my part.

But on the other hand, in keeping a focus on the more expensive items while losing sight of the smaller PC market, Apple are going to sell less machines, no matter how much extra profit they might be making. And that means it will affect market share. And as we know, market share is everything to Apple.

I don't think we're going to see them raise the bottom end of the scale - I think that we will still see the 17" iMac - also got to bear in mind the education market - but I think that we might see a re-think on the Mac Mini front. Maybe aTV integration with a larger, faster hard drive, maybe slightly larger in form factor -(Mac Midi?) - but I'm not sure about seeing a mid-range mini tower UNLESS it can be properly specced out and STILL be miles cheaper than the Mac Pro, in which case, would it sit between the Mini and the iMac, or the iMac and the MacPro?

Still, what do I know? Just my contribution...

Oh cr@p - is that the time!? Got to get on with some work...

They both have a tool to create a VM from your existing PC. I would think that's pretty darn good...

Dunno, but I was thinking about this too. How many people whined about not buying a MacPro until PS went Universal? A lot. Now that PS is Universal, how many MacPros have sold? Hard to say, but weren't Mac sales reported to be very high at the last quarterly sales meeting? Is this a result of MacPro sales? iPhone hype? People finally developing good taste?

My guess is that once Leopard is out Macs in all shapes and sizes will sell very well. Of course, they'll probably sell very well anyway, so it doesn't really matter, does it?

I'd think that with integrated graphics, combo drive, and smaller hard drive, the base 20" iMac could hit $1099 (education price $999)

Although I thought the latest rumor had the 17" model back in the lineup?

I'd still like some rumor site to dig up some specs before Tuesday...anyone...anyone...Bueller?

IIRC, the original 20" iMac G5 was only $400 more than the 20" Cinema Display at the time it was introduced. That was the reason I bought the 20" iMac at that time.
