dude, everybody here knows that. What I want to know is if this NEW NANO (the 4G eneration one) will last 'til 9/2009, without being updated til then.

dude, not everyone. chill.

and yes, ipods are usully updated every september so it makes sense they will stay the same. may be a few firmware updates and one size upgrade or color added but thats it.

All I care to say is, "Down with chrome!"

YES.

If I have to go OCD on another square centimeter of chrome, I'm going to rock back and forth and cry in a corner. It's too delicate. I put my Nano in an iPod Sock since the day I had it, and there are a half dozen barely noticeable (but there) thread-of-a-spiderweb-tiny scratches on it.

I'm thankful I got my 5.5gen iPod refurbished with a few scuffs on it, else I would be just as nervous handling that. Thank technology for $5 iPod Socks. The chrome bezel on my iPhone drives me as equally nuts as the Nano, though it's always in a capsule and I rarely see it. I put a screen protector over the back - if anything happens to the Apple logo, I'll lose my bloody mind.

The only chrome I like is on cars, or that which came from Google. :)

Lol. :D

I've got a thought. I was thinking about the Kindle and being able to buy books on the go with free service if you're buying a book.

Could Apple do the same with the iPod Classic/Nano? If they could partner with a wireless data company (ATT or whoever) to allow people to buy music wirelessly... iTunes sales would go WAY up. It would be the easiest way to purchase music or possibly even videos. This doesn't sound that impossible. Wasn't there talk about Apple becoming a provider? I think this would be a huge next step. Wireless downloads (anywhere - without WiFi) would be huge.

I can't believe that they're just updating the ipods. Who in the world really NEEDS a new ipod? It seems that there will NEVER be new Macbook Pro's after the last fundamental design upgrade seven years ago.

Here's waiting until Jan '09, just to be disappointed once again?

I think I'll have to go back to using Linux on some other companies laptop. That's because while I don't need a new ipod, I really do need a new work machine.

Also I had hoped for LCD upgrades (LED backlight?), but I guess I should just go with a Samsung which is better than an Apple one for half the price.

OK, I'll stop complaining.

October????!!

I can't believe it! That's what one of the Apple Store employees said about the release of the new macbook, back in July!

Two things,

One, Apple no longer likes to have returns, so when you see STOCK disappearing, that will be indication that it's about to happen.

Two. Everyone knows that Apple missed the back to school promo and with the FREE TOUCH, it makes sense as price cuts are coming.

Three. Apple loves to mess with us, it's a 50/50 chance but whatever we think here, Apple does the opposite.

You all are spoiled, whiny little children ya know that?
The macbooks are coming soon for da luv of gawd already! Most likely NOT at this ipod event though. Steve Jobs is not going to have a combined ipod and macbook event. Its probably going to be in late september or early October for another event that is macbook focused.

Do you all need some cookies and some milk to calm y'all down or something? Someone call a nanny with some pacifiers!

Doesn't a big invitation mean more than a simple Nano widescreen or iPod Touch with a gps? Seems like it to me.

There has got to be some big(ger) announcement at this thing that the rumors we've heard.

Yeah, itunes stuff. And thats about it.

Try a DELL XPS with Ubuntu preloaded. Guaranteed hardware compatibility.

Is there something lighter out there, without optical drive, but high resolution large screen (15 inch with higher res than the current MBP, or 17 inch)? Less than 5 pounds? I know it should be possible to build it, but am not familiar with other companies after having been a loyal apple customer for 3 years.

I think the new iPod line will look like this:

iPod shuffle

2 GB $69
4 GB $99

Available up to 10 different color cases. We may see a small display for the first time.

iPod nano

8 GB US$149
16 GB US$199
32 GB US$249

8 GB in silver only, 16 GB available in up to 10 different color cases, 32 GB in black and Product Red colors only. Design looks more like 2G nano but with 16:9 widescreen display and goes to Mini USB connector similar to those found on Creative and Sandisk players.

iPod classic

120 GB US$249
240 GB US$299

Looks identical to current 6G models but with higher capacity hard drives and an updated interface.

iPod touch

16 GB US$249
32 GB US$299
64 GB US$349

Will switch to second-generation iPhone case and is essentially the iPhone 3G minus the cellphone functionality.

I know it's been echoed constantly, but I really hope a laptop event comes very soon after this.

Because it IS the previous generation. That's the old "high end" iMac with the 2.8GHz Core 2 Extreme processor.

The current one is the 3.06GHz with the GeForce 8800GS card.

It's the old "BTO" 2.8GHz model from the previous generation, which was the fastest iMac available (around when the 2.0GHz and 2.4GHz aluminums were around...ie 1st gen aluminum iMacs) -- The newer ones, in other words, the "newer" generation of iMacs, including the 2.8GHz uses a refreshed processor architecture and a newer video card. That unit you are looking at must be the older 2.8, which was essentially just the old 2.4GHz Santa Rosa 24" iMac with a 2.8GHz Core 2 Extreme processor.

ingenious. That lineup prediction looks pretty solid, I think if this is an "iPod product line refresh event" which we all think it is, then you may win most of your bets on this one. I am curious to see what becomes of the classic, and what size flash units are used on the shuffle and nano. I think you are pretty solid here, I don't think we will be seeing 128GB available *soon* since it's just too pricey --look at SSD drives, and the iPhone which is newly refreshed at a 16GB model.

This may be a dumb question, but how does everyone here plan to find out about the news? Do you plan to use blogs, etc?

It seems like a few years back I was able to watch a webcast live, but I'm not sure if it was actually live or not, or where I watched it from.

I'm hoping to get the new iPod touch ASAP, but I'm also thinking of waiting a few days to see what everyone thinks of it first... I still have the feeling the current iPod touch may be what I get, but it will just depend on what is released... I'm hoping the new release is everything and more than I want, but if not I don't mind the current one, though I would hate to buy an "outdated" product... Either way, I want to try and stay as up to the minute as possible on everything that is released. If things go well, I'm even considering a Mac in the not too distant future.

Thanks

You're already here; why go anywhere else?

Macrumors isn't always the first to publish stories, but unless you need to know 30 seconds before everyone else, it'll be posted on the main page as soon as it happens. If you do feel that compulsion, I suggest scheduling a massage appointment and unplugging everything for a few days. It's just an iPod.

Then you're definitely in the right place. There will be 300 "omg it's awesome" posts and 200 "I hate this because one little thing is different" posts and 100 "They still didn't give me x, therefore I won't buy it" posts within a day. There will be no shortage of information.

I have successfully obtained images of the new MacBooks, they are changing the name officially to simply "Macintosh Portable" and the final products look something like this:

I'm so totally - like excited that, you know... that the event is for iPods. That's hot. It's so cool that Apple cares so much, like you know, the uh... eh, people who like to rock with iPods. Yeah, I know people, like want computers and stuff... but, the iPods are so much more... like you know, exciting... computers and stuff is not as cool as iPods.
