don't the larger flash storage chips just have improved performance and capacity and not larger physical dimensions? (costwise different, obviously)

isn't the 32 ipod touch the same machine as the 16ipod touch with just a different "memory card?"

Not exactly. The higher capacity iPods are actually using two chips. The 32GB model is using two 16GB cards because it would cost too much to have a single 32GB card.

What if the Apple UMPC using Silverthorne is coming out mid-summer, and what if it has 3G cellular builtin?

Apple might preannounce it at the end of Feb (we know that Silverthorne protos are around) so that there won't be the issue of FCC leaks during qualification.

MACTOUCH FTW!!!!!!!111 :D:cool::D

unless...

It won't happen on a Friday because then Apple doesn't get all the buzz and press coverage during the busy work week. That is the main reason why most announcements and product releases from Apple happen on Tuesday. On a Friday, there would be little press over the weekend and they would lose the viral marketing that works so well for them.

In addition, they generally like to "start the buzz" about 10-14 days before the event so people will speculate what it is all about and be more attentive. There is too little time left before the 15th to make this a reality. Sorry....

unless the iPhone SDK is going to be so much less than what everyone has imagined that they don't want buzz or press but just want to quietly slip it out the door. of course, then why have a 'special' event at all? it's too high profile not to do some kind of press conference...but maybe they want to minimize the exposure. i have no idea why i'm being so negative about the SDK...i just can't help but feel like it's not going to be nearly as freeing as everyone seems to think it's going to be.

Oh, we know its not. But it is still very important anyway. I'm just hoping that they are going to use the event as an excuse to announce the......*can't contain himself*........arghhhhh MACTOUCH FTW!!!!!!!!!111111111111 YEEEEEEEEE HAWWWWWWWWWW :D:D

All I Know What I Want

I don't know what they're going to announce nor am I going to speculate.

What want is Apple to introduce a multi-touch, glass, tablet-like 30-inch screen capable of recognizing third party devices such as a pen, brush, etc. The keyboard would NOT be on the screen but rather a typical keyboard. We would find out that Leopard was delayed because they were integrating multi-touch into the operating system.

As a graphic designer this would make Photoshop, Illustrator, Final Cut, etc. much more fluid and intuitive ... and possibly cut down on carpal tunnel.

I think it would be a natural progression from the iPhone (multi-touch, glass screen) and iMac (glass screen). Hopefully, it would be a more economic response to the Microsoft Surface.

I want my desktop to be a desktop.

Avid and Apple

I do know that Avid is telling all their potential customers to wait until this event to purchase anything.

A guy I know is building a couple of post-production trucks and has been torn between putting Final Cut stations in or Avids... Mostly because Avid's Unity servers are far more accepted than the Xsans and Xserves in the higher end, post production, environment. He said that it is likely an announcement that Avid and Apple finally have joined together to make their Unity server FCP friendly.

This is amidst the circulating rumor that Avid is pulling out of the Software side of video/film production and focusing on their Hardware ventures. The idea of joining up with Apple for their most popular and higher profit-margin product would definitely fall in line with this idea.

hilarious, love it. yeehaw indeed. i'm just excited to pick up my iphone in 6 days, learn the ropes and then watch the SDK make the apps come a rollin home to papa!!!:apple::apple::apple:

IMHO Apple will not do an event about the SDK. An SDK is for orogrammers and the next Apple software conference is ways away. Most buyers do not know or care to program. Most media would getting wrong also.

However the may announce SDK and show a bunch of newly minted native apps that will be sold via iTunes.

What are the chances that Apple has already popped in a 3G chip when they updated the storage-capacities? I mean, 3G chips can run on EDGE when there's no 3G available, so, conceivably, there could be a software update that "unlocks" the 3G option. Combine that with AT&T's recent news about increased 3G network coverage, Europeans (some of whom live in countries where EDGE just doesn't exist anymore) craving an iPhone of their own, and the SDK... That would make for a nice announcement, wouldn't it?

iPhone SDK
iPhone 3G "Unlock"
European iPhone expansion

Fingers crossed. :)
Certainly possible, but I think we'd start hearing about small differences between the phones if there was anything more than a storage change. And if they made that big of a change, I think they'd have held off release until the event. I suspect we'll officially hear about the 3G phone a couple months before it ships.

Just like Feb 2006 announcement...

iPhone leather cases
iPhone HiFi
er, thats all folk's.

Not really.

Demo of the SDK with big names on board like Lotus, and other business friendly apps.

I think also maybe the much speculated on 'missing' product announcement from the Keynote. Quite possibly the bigger iPod Touch/PDA/Tablet that we have been clamouring for for ever.

Erica Sadun over at TUAW reckons there is some evidence for it too. And she is like, well smart.

I seriously doubt if they would come up with a MacTouch thingie !
Probably, we are looking at:-
:apple: -> Blabbering about the 16 GB iPhone / 32 GB iTouch to start with..
:apple: -> MBP Penryn + multitouch trackpad (the high point !?)
:apple: -> 10.5.2 ("Starting today, all new MBP would now ship with 10.5.2")
:apple: -> iPhone SDK ("We have waited for it so long, and here it is...")
:apple: -> Apple TV(I don't follow Apple TV that much, so... not sure..:p)
:apple: -> Some business applications/new software for the Pro users !
:cool::D;) !! That's all folks !! :cool::D;)

Oh! I know! Flash-based Mac mini!

And a multitouch mouse! (instead of the damn mighty mouse nipple)

I don't think Apple will give any early warning on the 3G iPhone. I think they will just announce it the day it is released just like the 16GB. If Apple says " New 3G iPhone available July 20!, not one person with an ounce of brains will purchase the current model throwing iPhone sales under the bus until the new version is released. Kinda a catch 22 situation.

ugggh
this conversation has been disscussed so much.
Apple will have to anounce the 3G iPhone before it's released, because it has to gain FCC approval. It's either they anounce it a few months before it's available, or the FCC lets the cat out of the bag a few months before.

"not one person with an ounce of brains"

I remember when I was in London in January I was flipping through this newspaper I found on the Tube and they had hot upcoming electronics. It said to expect the "Macbook Touch" in February. It had a nice realistic picture and everything was stated so nonchalant like it was a known fact. (searched on the web for same realistic picture and couldn't find it). It had an optical drive in the picture though and I doubt that would be included in it so I'm sure it was just speculation.

As far as the event I'm hoping for an impressive Macbook Pro.

I agree that it's stupid. I like the plastic MacBook. I have no gripes with it. I've heard that aluminum casing dents easily. It may look nicer, but I don't consider it to be as practical.

It doesn't dent. It's very practical, and with Wireless-N, the reception would be greatly improved. The MacBooks definitely get better performance out of wireless, though, but the aluminum feels solid.

They won't make an aluminum MacBook, at least not coloured that way. They'd probably anodize it black or some other color to keep it with that "consumer" feel. Silver speaks "Pro".
