Expandability, a disability?

The MacBook Pro will most likely get released next week. The only reason for it to be updated at this event is if it has had a major redesign.

I just expect iPhone stuff at this event, plus maybe some info on the Asian launch.

Another possibility is of course BluRay support (watching and creation), but with the way things are going, they might decide to never support it and just push online video. (Seeing as Final Cut Studio probably has the poorest HD video support out of all the editing suites).

Good point.^ The state of the industry does not facilitate a unified design solution for Apple. With no "clear" standardization for High Definition content at the moment, apple must take one of two approaches toward the MBP.
Wait till a leader presents itself, most likely Blu-ray, and update all their software for that HD format. Or my preferred choice, Redesign the MBP to be expandable. The expandable design of the MB is hardly utilized in my opinion, Incorporation into a Professional portable would not only result in a Higher frequency of utility, it would also decrease the starting price of the Device. With more accessible expandability the need for high scale standard features diminishes, not to say that a high level of performance as a standard is unattractive, it simply creates a higher entry price.
If expandability is Datum for the new professional portables i believe they would sell a lot more units, but does this corrupt the Apple ideology? If they offer expandability in their pro books they introduce elements of incompatibility and hardware diversity that compromise the unity of the Macintosh platform. Levels are good, too many though and integration becomes messy.

I just checked the Moscone Center website:
http://www.moscone.com/site/do/event/list?nav.type=0
There's no mention of any Apple Event on the 26th, but there is something for CNET. Does the Moscone Center website usually have Apple Events posted?

Moscone's page shows MacWorld Summer '08 in Moscone West from 8 to 13 June....

There are many other venues in the Valley and the City that would work. Apple's made announcements at the Flint Center auditorium in Cupertino and at the California Theatre in San Jose.

There are other theatres and convention centers and hotel ballrooms that could be used as well - Moscone is probably too large for a simple PR announcement.

how do you know that is an apple event? It just says Corporate Event.

If it is a big public event then it must be something other than the iPhone SDK. The SDK is only of interest to the developer community (and financial wonks).

And presumably it will be not be new APIs, but just a carefully chosen subset of the OS X ones, with maybe some new stuff for the touch screen. So even to developers it doesn't justify a big event.

It doesn't dent. It's very practical, and with Wireless-N, the reception would be greatly improved. The MacBooks definitely get better performance out of wireless, though, but the aluminum feels solid.

They won't make an aluminum MacBook, at least not coloured that way. They'd probably anodize it black or some other color to keep it with that "consumer" feel. Silver speaks "Pro".

You've obviously never dropped your laptop. It dents and breaks.

Silver is outdated. I am sure Apple will head in a new direction when they finally decide to update the MBP. Silver has been the color since 2000. I think Apple will move away from metal and more towards carbon fiber. I'm thinking Black is the new pro color but with Apple you never know.

Come on folks!

We know the SDK will be released this month.
What makes you think this event would not include this?

Good grief. Some people have posted a laundry list of things you would think this is MWSF08 part 2.

If they release the new MBP and everything else now, what is left for spring?
I think we all know there might be iWork and iLife updates. But other stuff will be held over for spring as well I think.

First new macbook pros quality

I intend to buy a new macbook pro and I waiting hopefully for next tuesday, but I'm afraid about the quality of the first new macbooks pro, because I don't want to change broken pieces or something like that.

Do someone had a bad experience with new models ?

Would it be better if I bought the old model ?

Can someone tell me if his means anything:

I just ordered a MBP last week, with a customized 7200 rpm 200 gig HD. I checked the shipping status today and it says it will ship on "Feb 12-14" with a delivery of "Feb 16-20"

Hmmmmm....? Should it take this long for a custom order?

Looks like we might have something new on Tuesday!

As I remember MWSF Steve mentioned something like :apple: has many weeks to come with new products, or this is just the beginning of 2008...or something like that.

New stuff is what we must be seeing.....

Steve tends to say things that are just meant to spark interest or sell more product.

For instance a few years ago, Steve announced that it was Apple's "Year of the Laptop". They released the ibook and little else the whole year.

Then the next year he called it "The year of HD". Apple released a couple of new ACD's and converted to 16x9 aspect ratios on their laptop line. Nothing else happened the whole year.

So don't make too much out of a Steve keynote. It is all fluff.

I was planning on getting an Ipod Touch this weekend. Should I wait until after this event?

You'll be the judge of that. Just don't count on updates/added features without paying for them.
My advice is to not buy it on some idea of promises on what it can be, but only buy it if it truly is worth it for you in it's current form and function.

I remember when I was in London in January I was flipping through this newspaper I found on the Tube and they had hot upcoming electronics. It said to expect the "Macbook Touch" in February. It had a nice realistic picture and everything was stated so nonchalant like it was a known fact. (searched on the web for same realistic picture and couldn't find it). It had an optical drive in the picture though and I doubt that would be included in it so I'm sure it was just speculation.

As far as the event I'm hoping for an impressive Macbook Pro.

You mean its MACTOUCH FTW!!!!!1111....for realz????:eek:

Will SDK be the same as if it were jailbroken?

Noone knows.
My bet is that will be crippled in one way or the other, plus it will come with a plan just like the iTMS or as is the case with the ringtones (pay to get something ridiculous).

I think too all this is about the iPhone. A change in processors won't justify a press conference.
And about the MBP, which I'm waiting for like so many of you, browsing through the post, I think this is a summary of what you consider a minor redesign:

- MB/MBA-like keyboard.
- New GPU or VRAM increase.
- Magnetic latch.
- Bigger multitouch trackpad.

What would you consider to be a "major redesign"? Maybe a detachable screen wirelessly controlled that you could hang in front of you?
Seriously, the only real improvement I could see is thickness. I can see Apple shaving a few mm off their MB and MBP, but I don't know if that is a major redesign...

For me its not really that much about the features. For me its more about the price. I don't want to buy it this weekend, and then find out at this event that they drop the price by $100.

They won't just be announcing the SDK - there will also be the availability of several 3rd party applications for it as well. Steve'll trot those out and show them off - the dev kit will be an "oh yeah - and you can develop for this too if you want - and it's free". The announcement will be that the iPhone is opening up to third party apps -not just that there is a free dev kit.

That announcement (depending upon the apps) could be huge for the business community.
