The pessimist in me says Apple will announce the SDK alongside a new, updated iPhone and say that you can only use the SDK on the new iPhone. Everyone who has an older one is screwed.

You've obviously never dropped your laptop. It dents and breaks.

Silver is outdated. I am sure Apple will head in a new direction when they finally decide to update the MBP. Silver has been the color since 2000. I think Apple will move away from metal and more towards carbon fiber. I'm thinking Black is the new pro color but with Apple you never know.
The aluminium does dent, but it's not easy to do it. Most of the laptops I see day to day have to be a few years old before they seriously start to dent up. A MacBook of similar age looks a lot worse IMO (cracks, stains, etc.).

I think the carbon fibre idea is more "yesterday" than the future. Carbon fibre has been around for 20 years and has the disadvantage of high production costs and zero recycle-ability. Apple is moving towards more ecologically sound products, so I don't think you will be seeing carbon fibre anytime soon.

If recent developments are any guide, I think you will see raw metal (of one kind or another) used, with molecular-level colouring/texturing of the surface.

Noone knows.
My bet is that will be crippled in one way or the other, plus it will come with a plan just like the iTMS or as is the case with the ringtones (pay to get something ridiculous).

So you will have to pay for sdk???

I do know that Avid is telling all their potential customers to wait until this event to purchase anything.

A guy I know is building a couple of post-production trucks and has been torn between putting Final Cut stations in or Avids... Mostly because Avid's Unity servers are far more accepted than the Xsans and Xserves in the higher end, post production, environment. He said that it is likely an announcement that Avid and Apple finally have joined together to make their Unity server FCP friendly.

This is amidst the circulating rumor that Avid is pulling out of the Software side of video/film production and focusing on their Hardware ventures. The idea of joining up with Apple for their most popular and higher profit-margin product would definitely fall in line with this idea.

WOW, that would be huge!! how likely is this???

Timing Of Event Announcement?

ok, since the conventional wisdom now is that an event on the 26th is confirmed, what is the conventional wisdom on when the event would be announced to the media? is it usually one week in advance or two? seems that in the past it has been two, but i may be misremembering...

in either case, seems like there would be something from by the 19th at the latest or, possibly, as early as this coming tuesday (12th)...

To sum up the potential updates...

So to sum up the rumors...

  1. MBP update
  2. Mac Mini update (I'm waiting for this)
  3. IPod Phone/Touch SDK (Waiting for this anxiously too)
  4. Leopard 10.5.2 (Also waiting for this)
  5. Apple Cinema Display Update (I'm hoping for a price reduction)

Did I forget anything?

Maybe Apple can Buy Avid? Market Cap is only $849 million and both are not attending the NAB convention this year. New Rumor ;)

Yes, and people seem to not know that just like metal, carbon fibre can duct electricity.

I do like carbon fibre, but I am not sure I want it in a laptop. To me, that would look like one of those gamer's laptops. Not pro at all.

Go bloody magnesium if anything. And then either have it brushed, or paint it matte black.

Along with the SDK and maybe new video equipment, I'm with FCPNewbie and calling an introduction to the new version of the discontinued Shake, which is code named Phenomenon, and was said to be ready in '08. It should be just like Shake is, but running in realtime on the GPU, basically Motion on Hollywood Steroids...

And the MacBook Pros better be coming this next tuesday, if they don't, then I am expecting a big announcement about them at this event, more than a simple speed bump.

I'd love to get some news on Phenomenon too. I do video-work, and would love to get a little "beyond" Motion, but since Shake has been EOL'd, I would really want to spend my time learning something that I would be able to use a lot longer, like the new thing..

While I'd like to see this I think that this list it a bit optimistic. Realisticly we will see at least the SDK, 10.5.2, and the MBPs. We might see the other things at WWDC.

Or maybe...

If there's so much television and media involved, it could be...

1. Final Cut update - Blu-ray support and all that
2. iPhone 3G announcement
3. Movies and tv episodes finally available for sale and rent in European iTunes stores

*cough* $400 to $500 Apple rebate for early adopters ;) *cough* lol jk

I doubt apple will close out the 1st gen iPhone from a SDK release, but you never know I guess.

I still believe there is something to the 3G sim card in the current iPhone. They are probably expecting many people to upgrade to a 3G iPhone, and it will make the turnover a simple sim swap out. Maybe a trade in program? That would be sweet (if apple offers a fair deal).

Im just wondering...

If I pick up a Mac Mini sometime next week, it arrives about 5 days later, only for Apple to update it on the 26th (Or whenever this rumoured event happens). Can I ring up Apple telesales, send it back to them and them send me out a updated version from the same price? Or am I best waiting til march 1st, probley for them not to update the mini ;p

I'd wait if i were you. not worth the headaches of trying to convince them to return it. In previous experiences they have said that computers were unreturnable since they were "customized," even if they were original config.

Please stop.
The only difference between GSM and UMTS ("3G") SIM cards is the version number of the standard. If you get a new SIM card, you'll get a "3G" card. This has been true here in Germany for years and I'd be surprised if AT&T has been doing things differently in the US. (I don't think pre-3G SIM cards are produced any longer.)
Yes, the SIM card probably works in iPhone v2 and any other GSM or UMTS phone (unless the phone is locked).
