You can tell that the engineers have taken over...now two extra buttons on the phone, and with all the emphasis on camera updates.

No Ultra 3 is telling and also an engineering thing. Not selling well enough becuase of it's more rugged looks vs Series 9 to put much R&D this year. Make something less bold in a bigger size Series 10 instead and see how it sells.

The smartphone as a category reached the "good enough" category years ago, which is a serious threat to the whole industry. In fact, why would a 13 user feel the need to buy a 16? Honestly? They have nothing to improve anymore, which is why one feels that they are magnifying unnecessary nonsense with the power of marketing to maintain the feeling that something important has been added. And it's getting harder and harder. But I don't blame them. Smartphones have reached their limit...

iPhone 13 Pro Max here.

Nice incremental updates to the 16 Pro Max, specially Wi-Fi 7 and 4K/120 video recording.

But not enough for me to upgrade yet. Waiting for next year 17 Pro Max: all-three 48 PM rear cameras, 24 MP front, and under-display FaceID.

I'm not sure 'bigger and heavier' were the adjectives most people were hoping for for the iPhones Pros. I have big hands and 15PM seems at the limit for sensible one handed use already...

Just a reminder
Comparing the 15 Pro to the 16 Pro on the store now is brutal.

It's the same phone with a new button, slightly better zoom, barely noticeable bigger screen.

WOW

Been part of the iPhone Upgrade Program since it launched but.... WOW.
The previous years’ Pro models always get discontinued pretty sharpish.

These Apple Events are far too contrived and nauseating for me these days but I did do a search for the term, 'Sequoia', on the blog page, with nothing really coming up.
Was it not mentioned at lot?

Have to admit, as someone who usually loves these events, the last 30+ minutes was hard to get through. Not very exciting. A few nuggets here and there like Voice Memos, but the camera button and AI/VI was introduced with the 16 lineup. I'll review again, but I could actually downgrade to the 16 Plus this year or wait.

Is the 15 Pro going to get any/some of the AI features with iOS 18? Because that would be the only reason I'd be even slightly tempted to upgrade from my 15 Pro.

Possibly the most low energy presentation ever, and that's counting previous years, jeez. I mean, you're reading off a teleprompter with no live audience with multiple takes, at least put some energy into it.

If you have a 13 Pro onwards with a 120Hz display, there is zero reason to upgrade. Phones don't have anywhere to go as a product anymore, and Tim has been trying to milk something released in 2007 and probably worked on since 2004. Apple Intelligence also looks like a joke, and isn't even releasing until December, and only in US English.

How many times does it need to be mentioned that Apple (and all manufacturers for that matter) are not trying to get you to upgrade every year? These phones are aimed at people with iPhone 14 or older, and it's been that way for the past few cycles because that's how consumers are buying phones nowadays.

Of course they are trying to get people to upgrade every year. Not everyone will, they understand that, but to claim the goal is not to sell as many iPhones as possible is a bit silly. They spent quite a lot of time comparing performance to iPhone 15. That's a direct pitch to iPhone 15 owners.

With the iPhone 15 pro max only netting up to $650 from apple that would mean I would still have to come up with 650-700 dollars to upgrade to a 16 pro max model ( not that I plan to upgrade this is just an hypothetical ). That money could be better spent else where or saved for the iPhone 17 pro max/ultra.
