Apple Intelligence is a gamechanger that requires modern iPhones. AI is only going to increase in capability and this too will require you to buy newer iPhones to be able to take advantage of it.
The only thing what’s keeping AI away from older iPhones is the lack of sufficient RAM. This is planned obsolescence by Timmy because he knows the iPhone 16 hasn’t compelling possibilities for upgrading.

This planned obsolescence is greediness at its finest. Even the 16 pro with a meager 8 gb ram will probably not be able use the new features iOS 19, 20 has to offer.

If Apple offers Pro in the name, make it have the capability of a pro.

This does feel like a move to streamline / save costs this year. Reducing the material choices/sizes on the Watch, minimal changes to the iPhones (mostly software) and AirPods Max.
IMO, this is what it should be. We need to get to better refinement and not push out something insanely different every year and have a large amount of bugs. Also, the current state of the economy is a LOT to play here. I have talked to a significant amount of people, they can barely afford food, gas, bills for essentials. You think they will run out and get a new Airpods Max Gen 2 for $550?

Heck I make a good amount of money and I am significantly cutting back on regular upgrades. As much as I despise my M1 iPad Pro and would LOVE to upgrade to the iPad Pro M4 JUST for the screen (my M1 blooms like nothing I have seen before), I am just going to wait it out. All my essentials I mentioned before has skyrocketed. Not sure how people just working McDonalds or Target can survive currently.

This is the first time I’ve not had some kind of desire to upgrade. Not even a tiny itch. Getting the 15 Pro Max and S9 last year looks like a really good choice now. They are both great devices of course I just mean the 16/S10 seem like a very minor revision. To be fair there hasn’t been many major updates for years now but this event really takes the cake for most underwhelming and disappointing new iPhone/Watch. They almost feel like the same devices with small changes so they can say it’s new. It’s as if Apple isn’t even trying or they have run out of ideas.

For what it’s worth this should have been the year of the Apple foldable. Someone chickened out of the plan - guess who?
Yeah. Lets say even if it wasn't going to sell well we would have something cool to look back on. Now that the designs have become stale I don't think its going to be anything we will miss anytime soon.

What a ridiculous response! We've had basically the same phone for years and you think my response is outlandish? The last two years we've gotten a new button on the side. That's groundbreaking innovation? It's a software race now....there's very little left by way of hardware.
Well, at Apple there’s little left in hardware for years. For innovation and new ideas you’ll have to look elsewhere and there are plenty of new ways to implement the latest and greatest. Under the screen Face ID for example, give it more RAM to make it future proof.

They brag about the screen (which is Samsung 🫢) and about the camera (Sony 🫢) as if it’s their invention 🤣😂🤣. Next years camera systems will be Samsung too according to Gurman and will look like the iPhone 16 pro too 🤓

Marketing science has established that no amount of marketing will make someone buy more of your product than the max amount they would already buy due to their consumption habits. People who upgrade every year statistically speaking will very likely still upgrade every year because it’s people that treat consumerism as a hobby and altering their consumption habits is difficult for them and they’ll always find ways to rationalize it (I’ll buy it and return it if I don’t love it, etc etc). Apple’s entire strategy is tailored to fulfill the consumption habits of the mass market which we know upgrades phones every 2 to 3 years, I don’t know that a direct comparison to a 15 only appeals to the owners of the 15, as a consumer with a 13 might think “wow it’s that much faster than last year‘s phone which means it must be a huge upgrade from my 3 year old phone“. So really they are appealing to the entire market (as they should) but more importantly the feature set of the phone is tailored to capture the people who are upgrading from a 2- 3 year old phone as they are the key mass market demographic that will help them maintain or increase their market share.

I certainly fall into the camp of the annual iPhone upgrader you describe. :D

Some years Apple will focus on performance comparisons two (or more) generations back, this year they've decided to go one model back. This maybe because of the iPhone 15 (regular models) being incapable of doing Apple Intelligence, so they feel a special urge to try and push these people up to iPhone 16. Apple's response to what everyone else is doing in regards to AI isn't going to work if a very large number of people are carrying devices that can't handle it. If they just go and install apps like Co-Pilot, ChatGPT or Gemini instead, that's not good for Apple.

Tim needs to go after Vision Pro and now this event I’ve had enough of him, even the max headphones they only put usb c because they are forced to, nothing about better audio
They still already sound better than the Airpods Pro (which also didn't get an upgrade despite being their "best selling headphones ever").

Eh, pretty ho-hum event. Nothing surprising (for better or worse), just continued incremental updates to things. That's not necessarily a bad thing, as the iPhone and Apple Watch are still great products, and there's honestly only so much you can do with a phone at this point. I'm a bit more disappointed that we didn't get a more robust design change for the Apple Watch, and it looks like it's now one size fits all? At least I didn't see a mention of the typical small and large sizes for the watch.

The fact that the the AirPods Max barely received an upgrade, and the Ultra 2 only got a color upgrade is super disappointing (albeit not surprising given the rumor mill). Apple should've at least put the S10 SOC in the Ultra 2 for Apple Intelligence purposes. And it's absurd that the AirPods Max still only have the H1 chip in 'em.

With that being said, not every Apple Event can be a stunner, and hopefully we'll get some more excitement with the rumored Mac-focused event later in the fall.
Is this supposed to be the super cycle year? Or is it next year? The production of this year's event did seem ho-hum let's get this over with. I know there is another event next month for the M4 chips but this was disappointing.

Especially the Max headphones. Innovate or get out of the market. That laughing sound is from Bose, Sony and Sonos after watching the event.

As an aside. Nearing market close, AAPL appears to be recovering from the initial iPhone 16 intro slump. I wonder if Wall Street saw a diamond in the rough after further analysis. Interesting (and welcome).

These Apple Events are far too contrived and nauseating for me these days but I did do a search for the term, 'Sequoia', on the blog page, with nothing really coming up.
Was it not mentioned at lot?
Not really, as this was an iPhone focused event, so iOS was mentioned a lot. Sequoia is still set to be released soon (Apple just released DC1 today), but I expect the rumored fall Mac event will coincide with the release of Sequoia 15.1, and Apple will focus a ton on Sequoia and Apple Intelligence during that event.

Is the 15 Pro going to get any/some of the AI features with iOS 18? Because that would be the only reason I'd be even slightly tempted to upgrade from my 15 Pro.
Apart from the “innovative” action button and a “mind blowing” 15% speed increase, you’ll get the same functionality on your 15 Pro. If I were you, don’t give that money to Timmy. I hope more people won’t spend on Timmy. The less people buy, the harder the pressure for Apple to deliver more value for money.

I didn’t watch it, I’m more than happy with the Apple tech i have. Did Mother Nature make another appearance, or have Apple forgotten about her?

They still already sound better than the Airpods Pro (which also didn't get an upgrade despite being their "best selling headphones ever").
The AirPods Pro 2 have newer features and the H2 chip, the AirPods Max doesn't and it still has the H1 chip.

I will say it was too long. Maybe they should do it like WWDC and have a separate event for those who want to go deeper into camera updates.
WWDC was massively boring this year too, it is sad that the only thing I enjoyed from WWDC is built-in macOS window management FINALLY.....Windows 7 feature finally. I fully expect the Mac event to be boring as well since there will be no Mac Studio or Mac Pro for me. Just been a boring year overall.

Watched my first Apple event . . . and my last. One hour forty minutes of my life wasted. Everything I needed to know had been covered in the rumors for some time.
I say don't make it your last. It is just been a boring year. I watch every event and even WWDC this year was so boring. I say wait for next years and it will HOPEFULLY be better.....I hope....
