I know nothing about high end monitors but is there a similar monitor with all the built-in Apple features but better spec'd and better priced? Just curious what the Apple Tax is on the displays.

Hard to say because there are few, if any, 5k displays, or any displays with webcam and speakers.

...except the LG Ultrafine which is/was a couple of hundred bucks cheaper.

All I want to know is if the studio display will work with a PC. Unfortunately I have to use one for work but would love to have this monitor.

Does anyone know?
Historically, apple monitors have not played well with other devices. I would love to be able to switch back and forth from mac to xbox series x, but I doubt this monitor would support it without some kind of third party accessory (which I doubt will happen.)

This monitor is not worth it. From the PC side of things, you can get a 4k 144hz monitor for half the price. Sure, this might have lower resolution, but a 144hz refresh rate from a gaming monitor is SIGNIFICANTLY better than this
Can you recommend one? Doesn't look like I'm getting this

$1599 for that display.
Hmmmm... Worth it?
I believe so. The prices of the nano and stand also dropped. I'm a but on the fence. I want a 30"+ display and wonder what the next XDR will look like. Maybe we will see at WWDC when they might announce the Mac Pro. But this is a fair indication the upcoming XDR "might" drop in price.

It’s a new program so only certain items are in it now. It’s likely due to component shortages
I can understand that. But it’s your impression that this program, pending component availability, could be used to say, order a 1 TB SSD to replace the 512GB that comes with the Studio Max?

eGPU and upgradebale ram won’t happen again.

It’s contrary to the AS design.
AFAIK, eGPU only requires drivers written for ARM, which probably requires Apple to incentivize Nvidia or AMD to write them. I mean, is the Mac Pro even going to have a dedicated GPU? Perhaps that would be sufficient incentive. Upgradeable RAM and SSD is really only about how it connects; even if Apple chooses to use a proprietary connector like the old MacBooks, that could still be adapted to M.2 Nvme. And back in the days of PPC of course Macs used proprietary memory--but there was still a way to upgrade it yourself and buy it from a third party. No reason Apple can't do that other than greed and desire for more vertical integration and alienation of power users.

The Studio Display is kinda cool if you want speakers and a nice camera but it's basically the same as what I've been looking at since 2015 w/ my Retina iMac. And it makes no sense at all if you want two or three of them side-by-side like they show in the video. Kinda flies in the face of their stated environmental commitment with all that extra material. Maaaybe they'll release a simpler line of displays for less $'s, but I doubt it.

Disappointed with the event, but happy there is nothing I vaguely want to buy.

The monitor appears to contain an at least 8-year-old panel for $1,600. No thanks.

Studio is overkill and overpriced for most people. An M1 Pro version for closer to $1,000 would have been great.

An M1 in an iPad Air is a bit of a head scratcher. Poor product differentiation with that.

Shame the iPhone SE didn't get some design/camera love, but it's nice people get the faster chip.
That's the apple silicon transition for you, although it does make the 11' ipad pro quite redundant.

my ranking
1. iPad Air (because of price vs performance)
2. mac Studio (max and ultra)
3. Studio Display (over engineered - parallels to the original homepod - 3mics 6 speakers ?)
999. Apple TV+ (boring the rest of the world?)

...and on that bombshell, bye-bye 5k iMac!
Yep. And now, the grieving process and the whole deal of sifting through benchmarks in order to pick the right Mac to replace my woefully outdated 2017 5K iMac begins… And the worst part is, well, Apple's new 5K display will *still* be better than those from the competition (I have a 27'' 4K LG one, with a 5K resolution downscaled to 4K to match my 5K iMac's resolution, and it doesn't come close in any way, shape or form to the latter, even though it's a great display on its own), and yet it's way more expensive when bought separately than when included with an iMac. Oof.

On the flip side, having a modular system is, indeed, more flexible for pros, especially those in some less demanding lines of work (like, say, my own, graphic design) can survive perfectly with a Mac Mini or a low-end Studio… I'm guessing that Apple figured that their prosumer customers may be willing to pay a bit more for that and deal with the extra desk clutter; in so doing, they can now get away with offering only a 24'' iMac for low-end, home use, and greatly simplifying their line-up.

Also, considering how desktop computers have become a niche product, offering a good range of first-party displays which can be connected both to their extremely popular laptop lineup and to some generic boxes (which Steve would aptly call “trucks”) just makes perfect business sense. And having just made a transition to their own silicon and killed Hackintoshes in the process means there's not much choice, really. We'll just have to get whatever Apple serves us, and if we must cheapen out, the displays will be the first victims. Oh well…

Cause gaming is the only argument left for the Intel/Windows fanboys…
I wouldn’t say it’s an argument but just a different use.

If your gaming you need Windows. I love my iMac but it’s not a gaming PC. The way I look at it is it’s like having a hammer and a screwdriver. You can have both. Sure you can hammer in screws and try to drive nails with a screwdriver but why? Use the right tool for the job.

I’ve been holding out for a new more powerful mini with more ram but at same or cheaper price.
I’m not in the market for a studio despite, looks like I’m still awaiting that Mac mini update.

I also sensed a ratner moment when they told us about the m1’s secret interconnection.

it’s not possible for mere mortals to connect 2 m1’s, I’d be miffed if I bought the high end unit and now find there’s an even higher end unit.

im finding the whole drip feed of new systems really annoying. Mercedes do 7 year cycles of their cars which gives consumers some certainty about what they are buying and when the new shiny is coming out.

if I new the next mini will be 4 years away I’d have bought already.
we kind of already know when other models will get refreshed just not the mini.

That's how I took it as well... which sucks, because I was really hoping for a more reasonably-priced replacement for the 27", not one pushing $4k once you get a slightly larger internal drive and buy the keyboard and trackpad that the Mac Studio doesn't come with (it comes with just.... a power cord...). Guess a higher-end 24" is going to have to do it for me.
Sucks. I've been waiting for a new 27 inch iMac for so long. It's been my favorite Mac ever by far and just want a M1 version.

Studio display
- 60hz (I assume as no mention about Promotion or hz in specs)
- Tilt stand extra $400
- Also seems you need to choose the stand or vesa mount on order, and vesa mount does not sell separately.

The lack of Promotion is absolutely crazy.

Sure the performance may be great, but at the end of the day you are marketing a "studio quality" (whatever that means) larger Mac Mini for $6200 (properly config'd) where you can't upgrade anything, nor add additional hard drives. The cost is ridiculous, and the idea that "pros" want to put their computer on their desktop is just silly.

And before we continue, pros that need exceptional displays will most likely choose BenQ, not the overpriced Apple display that has awesome speakers no pro cares about. Just one example is, if you're an audio pro, I assure you that you will not be using the display's speakers.

Pros don't care about portability. If we need to go somewhere with a computer, we buy a laptop. What we do need is the ability to add things like:

- Recording Studio (PCIe card slots for Avid HDX)
- 3D Rendering (PCIe card slots for multiple GPUs - Even when the M1 Ultra has seemingly awesome GPU performance, you often need more)
- SATA (or even better SAS) drive bays for internal storage (I have 3 10TB drives, with 2 2TB SSD drives in my Mac Pro 2010 desktop right now)

Apple really needs to understand that if pros are going to spend that kind of money, they don't want everything soldered to the board, and they need to be able to add the items they require without resorting to buying external Thunderbolt chassis.

Once again, this is Tim's Apple and it is very disappointing. While I'm excited for the Mac Pro announcement (sometime in the future apparently), I'm not holding my breath for any kind of realistic price point to purchase one.
