if apple has closed this deal down, it's clearly a dick move from them. first they replace the old models, and now because it's getting out in the open, they won't take responsibility for it and do the replacement for the rest of the people who still qualify.
I had in mind to replace my macbook to a PC based one (as in my next notebook would be a PC based one with windows/linux), because in innovation, apple can't show much these days other than mindless overhyped but underpowered machines.
I'll be visiting that 'genius' next week, but if the result will be similar to what I read here recently, that will make my decision a 100% concerning my next machine.
dick move apple, dick move.
No that's the retinas, yours is held in by 3 screws. Take 15-20min to replace and under $100.

Yeah that's so bad of them to give people new machines if they have bad batteries when replacements were out of stock and now actually replacing batteries now that they're in stock! /s
Grow up, you'd be lucky to even be able to talk to someone on the phone about repairing a 5 y/o windows laptop, let alone get a new machine, let alone get a battery fixed.
Not sure you can say that not giving everyone with a 2012 MBPr a new or refurbished one a dick move.
I don't understand this attitude. As if anyone here was planning on going in without knowing about this 'deal'. It was a flukish thing and I'm sure they noticed the influx of these in the last 48 hours after the article went live. I'm sure many more took advantage of this than what would have happened organically without any publicity.Way to go guys. Now you've ruined it for everyone by reporting this
Reddit guy is full of ****, sorry folks....there is more to his story or he is just a pathological liar. There is just simply no way that Apple would just say “we’re gonna charge you 200 and give you a 5 year newer computer” for just a battery. Perhaps a year or two newer, but no way...
so I was offered the CRU unit yesterday morning but my concern is; what if they change their mind to replace my battery then? is that possible?
yeap that's what I did. gave my CC details at the store and waiting to be called. So you accepted the unit and are waiting to get it? I am curious to see if they follow through. Please post an update.
Since it's already written let's hope they follow through.yeap that's what I did. gave my CC details at the store and waiting to be called.
Also, this is written in the receipt I got from Apple;
Due to part constraint, Apple has offered to replace computer at the price of the battery. Customer agreed to begin process and is aware that it may take a couple of weeks to complete. Unit hasn't been backed up, but he will take this time to do so.
They took my credit card info over the phone last evening - hope it still goes through...

So you didn't ask them to order the parts for you? They told me it will be $1590, ordered now but I can decide take it or not upon the parts arrive, which is around 3-4 week later.I visited an apple store in HK today too with no luck. Though my battery wasn't low enough in the first place being at 83% according to their diagnostic. The staff then said I could replace the battery now, but recommends me to go home and wear down the battery more first so that I could get the cheaper battery replacement price of Hk$1500ish, vs HK$3000ish I would have to pay now since my battery isn't below 80%.
Confirming my own experience at Apple Store / Sherway Gardens / Toronto, Canada after narrowly missing my appointment at Eaton Centre and being turned away until Friday.
After writing this story yesterday, I booked my own Genius Bar appointment at getsupport.apple.com and took my Mid-2012 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro with a "Service Battery" status in About This Mac and just 56% capacity health on coconutBattery into the Apple Store. Genius ran the diagnostic test, confirmed the battery needed servicing, and said I have the option to get an entire replacement model of equivalent specs. He wrote down my current MBP's tech specs, went to the back a few times, and said I'll get a newer model — he didn't specify which unfortunately — in about a week. The only cost will be the regular out-of-warranty battery price of $259 Canadian.
Hmmmm interesting. Good news for most. After being told no replacement (7/25) and wait until aug 8th got a call today (7/26) that said there offering replacement. Aug 8th got pushed back.. so my suggestion is to order battery anyway
