if apple has closed this deal down, it's clearly a dick move from them. first they replace the old models, and now because it's getting out in the open, they won't take responsibility for it and do the replacement for the rest of the people who still qualify.

I had in mind to replace my macbook to a PC based one (as in my next notebook would be a PC based one with windows/linux), because in innovation, apple can't show much these days other than mindless overhyped but underpowered machines.

I'll be visiting that 'genius' next week, but if the result will be similar to what I read here recently, that will make my decision a 100% concerning my next machine.

dick move apple, dick move.

Not sure you can say that not giving everyone with a 2012 MBPr a new or refurbished one a dick move.

No that's the retinas, yours is held in by 3 screws. Take 15-20min to replace and under $100.

Yeah that's so bad of them to give people new machines if they have bad batteries when replacements were out of stock and now actually replacing batteries now that they're in stock! /s

Grow up, you'd be lucky to even be able to talk to someone on the phone about repairing a 5 y/o windows laptop, let alone get a new machine, let alone get a battery fixed.

not an argument. in the PC world, it's called spare parts, and independent service suppliers. in apple world, it's apple or nothing. maybe you'll have to grow out of your apple fanboyship.

all I'm saying is, some are more equal than others.

Way to go guys. Now you've ruined it for everyone by reporting this
I don't understand this attitude. As if anyone here was planning on going in without knowing about this 'deal'. It was a flukish thing and I'm sure they noticed the influx of these in the last 48 hours after the article went live. I'm sure many more took advantage of this than what would have happened organically without any publicity.

So uh, what are the chances they revoke my replacement when I go to pick it up? I brought mine in 7 days ago, way before all this press started.

Reddit guy is full of ****, sorry folks....there is more to his story or he is just a pathological liar. There is just simply no way that Apple would just say “we’re gonna charge you 200 and give you a 5 year newer computer” for just a battery. Perhaps a year or two newer, but no way...

Actually, thats just what they did. I have the mid-2012 Retina 15" and it had "Service Battery" when you clicked the battery icon in the toolbar. After finding this article I tried it out because I met all the requirements listed in the article and yesterday made an appointment at the local Apple Store genius bar. After a few mins the tech came out, plugged some cables in, looked at my battery info, and confirmed the battery life was awful (I lost 10% battery in the 5 mins I was sitting there). He came back and said that due to the shortage in battery parts Apple had implemented the replacement program. The new computer would take about 10 days to come in and then I would pay $199 to replace the battery, in return get a newer mac.

Just visit the Apple Store in Hong Kong, no luck.

My battery was 80% health, and the staff suggest me to order a spare parts, which is out of stock. They told me it require around 3-4 weeks for the parts arrive.

When he go through the order procedure, I saw he figured out something from his iPad and go discuss with several staffs (or manager?). He came back and told me nothing special but wait for the parts. Not sure if there are any hope on receiving a CRU eventually.:(

I visited an apple store in HK today too with no luck. Though my battery wasn't low enough in the first place being at 83% according to their diagnostic. The staff then said I could replace the battery now, but recommends me to go home and wear down the battery more first so that I could get the cheaper battery replacement price of Hk$1500ish, vs HK$3000ish I would have to pay now since my battery isn't below 80%.

so I was offered the CRU unit yesterday morning but my concern is; what if they change their mind to replace my battery then? is that possible?

So you accepted the unit and are waiting to get it? I am curious to see if they follow through. Please post an update.

yeap that's what I did. gave my CC details at the store and waiting to be called.

Also, this is written in the receipt I got from Apple;

Due to part constraint, Apple has offered to replace computer at the price of the battery. Customer agreed to begin process and is aware that it may take a couple of weeks to complete. Unit hasn't been backed up, but he will take this time to do so.

Since it's already written let's hope they follow through.

They took my credit card info over the phone last evening - hope it still goes through...

Same here. I received a call about an hour after I got home from the Apple Store asking for my CC info. I specifically asked if I would be getting my same computer, just the 2015 version and she said "it looks like it will be a refurbished 2015... well, okay... I *think* it will be a refurbished 2015 model with your same specs, but sometimes we open the box expecting one thing and it has a better computer inside. No matter what you will be getting the equivalent of your current computer, but most likely better." ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I'm just hoping I get a computer at this point!

Mine says something similar. I think we're safe - but I guess we'll see.

So you didn't ask them to order the parts for you? They told me it will be $1590, ordered now but I can decide take it or not upon the parts arrive, which is around 3-4 week later.

Confirming my own experience at Apple Store / Sherway Gardens / Toronto, Canada after narrowly missing my appointment at Eaton Centre and being turned away until Friday.

After writing this story yesterday, I booked my own Genius Bar appointment at getsupport.apple.com and took my Mid-2012 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro with a "Service Battery" status in About This Mac and just 56% capacity health on coconutBattery into the Apple Store. Genius ran the diagnostic test, confirmed the battery needed servicing, and said I have the option to get an entire replacement model of equivalent specs. He wrote down my current MBP's tech specs, went to the back a few times, and said I'll get a newer model — he didn't specify which unfortunately — in about a week. The only cost will be the regular out-of-warranty battery price of $259 Canadian.

You will get a 2017 model, I got mine last month at Square One Apple Store.

Sucks to be late to the party on this, but I'm getting the free battery replacement for waiting. Can't argue with that!

A full replacement would have been genuinely appreciated. My Early 2013 has always had sketchy i/o ports and has had the screen replaced multiple times.

After being told no replacement (7/25) and wait until aug 8th got a call today (7/26) that said there offering replacement. Aug 8th got pushed back.. so my suggestion is to order battery anyway
Hmmmm interesting. Good news for most.

They need to shut down the masses. Inventory doesn't magically appear. Get the word out that it's over and only people who need to fix and not the opportunist will be rewarded

Fingers crossed for everyone in this situation!

I had exactly the same worded work authorization as you created for me yesterday, at about 5.15 EST, in California. What region are you in? Did the apple store call you directly, or was it apple care?

I did tell them to go ahead and put the order through, thinking that maybe on the off chance something good would happen. He didn't actually tell me I could decide whether or not I want it once the part arrived, but I just assumed that to be the case since they didn't take my CC details at the time.
