but I can't go running with this watch (without my iPhone) :D

Actually, you can. Your distance won't be as accurate (only measured by step count) and your track/route will be missing. Everything else can still be measured and will be synced to your iPhone as soon as they are connected.

This is why I obsess over Apple's marketing. They understand that there is so much beauty in simplicity man. The blank page with the word apple watch on it is so ingenious. It gets your attention quicker than a page consumed with so much color and clutter. It's something you can never forget.

Interesting. I never thought about that until you mentioned it, but for someone who doesn't fully understand the functionality of these devices (a good portion of Apple consumers) it really hasn't been completely obvious that you need an iPhone.

I guarentee there will be at least a handful of "I bought the Apple Watch and didn't know I needed an iPhone!" complaints once it is released.

Probably more of a case that they have an iPhone already (whether or not it's compatible is another matter) - but rather - they didn't realize how integrated they are

The pictures of people wearing the watch are far more appealing than the one's of the watch alone.

I agree. It looks a lot nicer on a wrist than against a white or black backdrop.

Apple has continually pushed the fashion item aspect of the watch because for many consumers, that is what the Apple Watch will be....

Also a bigger market than just focusing on sports or activity, which was the early talk about the watch's target.

Fashion over functionality.

If that were the case the watch would be much sleeker with no sensors, no wireless connectivity. The functionality of the watch drove the design, which is why its the shape it is.

... unless Apple or a third party comes up with a much smaller, wearable, intermediary device.

One with GPS and a large memory, but no screen, so AppleWatch developers could use it in the absence of an iDevice.

It should be water and shock resistant, rechargeable, and would sync with your iPhone as soon as it is within BT range.

There, problem solved. Are you listening, Apple?

ps: Worn on your ankle or built in your Nikes, and the quality of the collected data increases dramatically, with the addition of some sensors.

question - there will be third party bands ... YES ?

and I'll say again - take my money :)

Officials ones -- we'll see. My guess is early on Apple will choose to capture this revenue itself. Eventually a Made for Apple Watch program will probably emerge. Of course that won't stop the Chinese knock off market. So yes, there will probably be "3rd Party" bands on eBay even before the watch launches.

What? What are you talking about? You don't need any other device but the watch to go running.

Indeed, and yes, I'm sure there will be a LOT in reality.

We here all understand this and is obvious and well known.
This would be like me buying a plant, not realising I had the wrong type of soil in my garden.
For someone into plants and gardens it would be totally obvious it would never grow there.
But hey, I saw the nice plant in the advert so I wanted one :)

Of course, there will be a LOT of totally non technical people who will find this out at the last second at the Apple store.
I would also presume this will be made quite obvious at the "Buy your Apple Watch here" website, that you need an iPhone for this product.

We may think it's obvious and funny.
But so far, the media adverts are very much glossing over this fact.

It's not like they are showing an iPhone along side it, with a statement like "The new perfect accessory for your iPhone"
So everyone totally got the message.

If anything, so far, it's almost being hidden.

You don't think it's possible that someone who does not have an iPhone, perhaps they like other phones for other reasons, might see this and also like the Apple Watch ?

Fashion over functionality.

Well.. these are worn. It would be foolish (and futile) to deny the fashion component of anything that is worn or is otherwise publically visible and associated with individuals.

We'd all be wearing cheap, rugged, functional sack dresses (men and women), leggings, and shoes if people didn't value fashion.

Also, what sacrifices to function do you think were made for the sake of fashion? I can see how Apple focused on fashion, but I don't really see what functionality was lost as a result.

Seems like they have fashion and function, right?

Gawd, that green...

that green...

Considering the "fashion focus" of this product, I expect that there will be some sort of rudimentary mode that lets you wear the iWatch and get all the fashion benefits (pretty lights, time and date) without actually having or even owning an iPhone.

Well it does say "Requires iPhone 5 or later." in small, faint text at the bottom of the Apple Watch web pages. :)

Further confirmation the Watch is a luxury fashion accessory rather than ground-breaking technology?

Hopefully the Apple store associates will make this clear before you buy.

Or it's both.
