It doesn't make sense to keep using the Air moniker

It's either Pro or non-Pro

MacBook - MacBook Pro
iMac - iMac Pro
iPad - iPad Pro
iPhone - iPhone Pro
Apple Watch - Apple Watch Pro
Apple TV - Apple TV Pro
iCloud - iCloud Pro

Simple!

What is an Apple Watch Pro? What content do you want to create with a watch?

And the MacBook should be renamed into MacBook light or MacBook Mini.

I wouldn’t be so sure about that when you take a look at the Mojave changes. With the LCD font smoothing option gone, Mojave will be a substandard experience on a non-retina screen unless you want to dive into Terminal to run some defaults commands. If there’s even a bit of the old Apple left in the company, they won’t release another non-retina computer with such an OS release just around the corner.

I just think that if they make the MBA retina, then they're also going to give it a butterfly keyboard, force-touch trackpad, and USB-C ports and it will effectively be a MacBook. I can't see them upgrading the screen yet keeping the old form factor.

I think the form factor will indeed see some changes to accommodate a retina screen, but I'll be seriously disappointed if they release another non-retina computer while the OS is making clear that non-retina users don't matter to Apple.

Perfect Macbook Air for me

  • same basic design
  • retina screen
  • edge to edge screen
  • quad core chip option
  • 16GB
  • space gray
I would add: Costs the same as a mid-range Chromebook. The target mass-market is students, and frankly at this functional level there is intense competition and I think MacOS is not compelling enough for people who are not power users and can perform nearly every task with cloud based apps like those offered for "free" by Google.

No way, in a cheap MacBook ? All this stuff is too expensive, or they’ ll release a stripped current 12 inch MacBook, that could be a possibility.
I think it will be similar to a MacBook Air, but with a retina display , no more grey/silver bezels, but black and fewer connections, perhaps one usb-c.

Ah well, as long as it has magsafe, the old keyboard and two USB-A ports - what's not to like ?

It won't. Move on.

Apple has a real opportunity here to not screw up. This update could be so simple and yet so desirable to consumers. Apple needs to have an updated entry level everyday laptop, and the MacBook is just not that product.....too few ports, too small screen, keyboard problems, underpowered processors, limited battery life. The current MacBook is a niche product for people that put portability above everything else....which is fine.....but not the right device for the everyday entry level consumer.

Apple, this is so simple:
  • Keep the beloved wedge shape and iconic illuminated Apple logo
  • Keep the ports
  • Keep the crazy great Battery life
  • Keep the current MBA trackpad and keyboard (no butterfly mechanism)
  • Replace thunderbolt 2 with thunderbolt 3
  • Replace TN display with 1080p IPS Display
  • Update the processor and other internals with modest/routine spec bumps
  • Reduce the bezel to reduce the footprint.....but this is not a big priority
  • Keep the MacBook Air name and $999 price point: it’s the lowest priced MacBook....so light on the pocketbook

Wait, which do you want to do? Keep the Thunderbolt 2 port or replace it with Thunderbolt 3? Why would they put a Thunderbolt 3 port and also add an old USB-A port? Would it not make sense to use USB-C, which could conveniently use the Thunderbolt 3 port? Since USB-C also supports power, why not use that and have the added bonus of being able to use an industry standard battery pack to recharge on the go/away from a power outlet?

The problem with using the 'Pro' moniker is that Apple can claim its products are 'pro' but there is really nothing 'pro' about their 'pro' products.

Maybe there's a reason Apple dropped the 11" MacBook Air in 2016...

This new laptop could be the "MacBook mini". A smaller MacBook with a smaller display should cost less, require a smaller battery, a smaller case, etc. If cost is the target, that would only be logical. For parts, use the same components from other hardware to benefit from a lower-cost-per-unit, such as using the same 10.5‑inch or 12.9‑inch LCD as the iPad Pro and the same keyboard as the iPad Pro smart keyboard, for example (but with function keys).

Really Apple Watch, Apple TV and iCloud Pro. Yes the first 4 make sense. But not the last 3. Are they going to rebrand the Mini as Mac and then have Mac and Mac Pro.

Well, my MBA 2014 has a thunderbolt 2 port for plugging in monitors and peripherals. So, I would like to see them upgrade that to thunderbolt 3, which I thought was compatible with USB-C. But, I could be completely mistaken. Anyway, I more or less wanted to leave the ports the way they are: except for updating the thunderbolt 2 port.

This for me is the most intriguing Apple release in a long time. Could be a very compelling product, but Im scared about how they are going to cripple it as to not cannibalize all the 13 inch Pro sales/12 inch MacBooks. 1 usb-c port? 4 gb ram base?

It is hard to see where this is going to fit in their ecosystem of laptop lines.

"Gurman expects at least one of the entry-level notebooks to have a starting price of $999"

What's Apple idea of entry level? 2GB RAM and 64MB SSD?
Seeings how the entry level of all other notebooks are 8 and 128 it may be this or 4gb and 128.

All they should do is make the existing Non Touchbar MacBook Pro its successor, drop the Pro moniker, cheaper processor and bring it down to 1099, bring the current Retina MacBook down to 999/899. Its really that simple.

They should rename the current macbook the Macbook Air since it sacrifices performance for weight and portability (as light as air!). And this new version of a budget laptop rumored to be introduce this fall should be called just Macbook since it will likely fall somewhere in the middle between the Air and the Pros in terms of mobility and performance.

So to recap
Current macbook -> Macbook Air
New budget laptop -> Macbook
Macbook Pros -> no change

This would be more logical to me at least.

Both of you are pretty much on point.

MacBook Air is NOT the smallest laptop in Apple's lineup or vs the competition using a full-size keyboard any longer. The new aluminum MacBook (2016 - current) fully replaces it in almost all points:

Retina (higher screen) resolution
smaller dimensions
more portability and no fan!
Missing out on: USB-A and MicroSD ports.

I think if the current MacBook evolves to have:
2x ThunderBolt 3 USB-C ports, many would be just fine in this target market to have a Sateshi USB-C side port that grants: 3x USB-A, SD, MicroSD ports ... I've got that for my '18 MBP so I'm very happy. It's very small ads absolutely no weight and is very small add on.

MBA will be sunset completely ... it's now larger than all the MacBook and MacBook Pro lineup! Sorry it ads good $ financial value for what you pay for ... yet I think the new '18 MacBook will drop at least $300-500US in price to give the MBP 13' some more breathing room, and remain with only ultra class cpu's to still have no fans and only dual-core.

The iMac Pro still has USB-A Ports.

Lower priced MB might be what comes or an ARM based Mini but, either way, you need to differentiate the two. I can’t see a Mac Event as they Air simply isn’t important to Apple other than to give people a cheap machine.

I want a retina display, usb c ports, long battery life, and the third gen butterfly keyboard and I'll buy it. As long as I can get 1 TB ssd and 16 GB ram and it should ship with Mojave.

Whatever Apple has in store, I have a gut feeling they're going to disappoint their most die-hard base by neutering the MacBook Air or rebranding the current MacBook as the All-New "Macbook Air". And of course, Tim or Phil will say something like, "... they're the best Apple computers ever!"

Strictly focusing on the hardware design, the 13" Razor Stealth is what I envisioned an all-new "Macbook" would look like in 2018. (You can see it here: https://www.razer.com/gaming-laptops/razer-blade-stealth?utm_source=Google&utm_medium=Keywords&utm_content=886&utm_campaign=Blade Stealth_Keywords_Brand&gclid=CjwKCAjwns_bBRBCEiwA7AVGHq-FGQNENdDMekFxNrCrtfi2_chZicVU9_TDuz7zDss_birLBfp7_hoCohgQAvD_BwE )

It reminds me of the Black plastic Intel Macbooks from circa 2005 when Apple was "Apple". It would be so easy for them to do something like this and they would sell faster than crack cocaine at a Rick James concert in Detroit.

Those were the days.
