Hopefully 2024 is his last year.
If he’s replaced by someone inside the company, they’re most likely to run it just as he has. If he’s replaced by someone outside the company, I can see their first “big move” to show how different they are from the old management would be to reduce Macs down to just those required by developers creating iOS/iPadOS software while focusing on the “next big thing”.

I'm quite content with mine, but barring disaster I won't be upgrading next year or the year after. They last a long time.
Agree completely… use it until the battery goes.. then get it replaced and it will keep on going.

There just isn’t a really compelling reason to upgrade iPads.. even oled isn’t going to make much of a difference when the contrast ratio and quality of their lcd panels are already so good.

I see the graphic for this article is an iPad surrounded by M3…
What is the value proposition of M3 in an iPad? Except it being supported longer than previous iPads.

There’s none, just look at iPad OS and its limitations. Look at the App Store… which I think is mostly filled with junk (there are some amazing apps from Apple, Microsoft, google and others… but most Apps in the store are trash).

I love my 12.9 iPad Pro.

I’d like to see the big pro iPad get slightly bigger so that the screen is the same size as an A4 piece of paper. I’d also like to see some weight shaved off of it. The big Pro is very heavy.
That’s something conflicting to ask. And if they do intend to add pad charging (cough wireless charging cough), then iPad will be heavier.
cant wait to see the crippled storage numbers. 512mb base
Jokes aside, 512MB cannot even hold iOS itself. But it would be hilarious to see. Maybe Apple can build a light version?

I find most users overestimate what storage they need on their phone or tablet. And with that I find lots of people haven’t a clue how to manage their email resulting in literally thousands of messages in their inbox because they never learned how to simply delete or archive the messages they’ve already read.

Indeed one woman picking up her new iPad 10th Gen I had setup for her last week was stunned when I showed her how simple it was to delete/trash or archive her over 9,000 backed up emails in her inbox.

Speaking strictly for myself I never came close to using up the storage capacity on my base iPad Pro 10.5 or iPhone 8 plus. Ditto with my current 64GB iPad Air 5. And no way in hell will I ever use up the base 128GB on my current iPhone 14.

The basic storage capacity for these things are there for hoarders of useless stuff and those who barely understand, if at all, how to use their device. I’ve met so many people who don’t know what Airdrop is or how to actually turn off an app as opposed to just minimizing it into the background.

As I have often said before these devices come with a million things the vast majority will likely never use, but as long as they can do the half dozen or so things they want then they’re good.

I certainly don’t use anywhere near the full abilities of my iPad and iPhone.

I love love love my Mini 6. It’s a workhorse (for my needs). USB C is awesome. Combined with a sandisk portable ssd large project files become super portable. Battery could be better, but I think 3nm will help there.
If you have a breakdown of energy use by component, for most workloads, the screen will be the most power hungry.

It's hard to increase iPad sales with new features until the use case(s) are changed.
Apple has sold a little over half a billion iPads since they started shipping them in 2010. And, half the folks buying iPads want precisely what Apple’s offering, no use case change needed. With 8 billion people in the world (and at least a quarter of a billion with older iPads that want upgrades, also requiring no use case change) there’s an enormous upside available.

How many of those people are in poverty? You talk as if every one of those 8 billion are a potential iPad customer. It’s laughable. Only a fraction of that 8 billion would even consider an iPad.

512MB? Surely should be 1TB storage on the base model. Heck, even 2TB.

Come on Apple, you know that everyone needs it.
Actually, I need 2TB of storage for music library and photo library, which is already 1TB in size.

They’ve ONLY sold just over half a billion since 2010. As long as there’s not 7.5 billion in poverty, they’ve still got a HUGE upside potential just with what they’re currently selling. The numbers support that. Even if there’s 2 million folks that say they’ll never buy another iPad unless the OS changes significantly, there’s still many millions more (both with iPads and have never used iPads) that are potential customers for a new iPad (over 60 million just last year, according to another post).

Just checked, there’s at least 1.1 billion in poverty in the world, and Apple hasn’t even gotten to 1 billion yet. It’s even possible that they may move on to the next thing before they even sell the 1 billionth iPad! And, by the way, a fraction, say 1/10, of 8 billion is still 800,000,000, more iPads than Apple has sold to date. If ONLY that many would ever consider an iPad, that’s enough to last Apple for another 6-8 years.

If that’s your sole criteria for value proposition… 😂
You answered your own question in the third sentence. Beyond that, for anyone that doesn’t understand the benefit of a new generation of processor, it’s not like I’m going to be able to describe to them how M4 is better than M3.

Curious, what would compel you to upgrade?

I really don’t know, that’s the thing. My iPad Pro currently still does everything I need of it, stage manager hasn’t proven compelling, and right now, I just look at every other iPad Pro after the 2018 model and go “yeap, I will hang on to mine for another year”.

All the more that I recently got its battery replaced, so that’s one less incentive. Maybe when it stops being updated?

Nothing at all wrong with that.
