At no point, because that would just mean one cannibalizing the other. Apple is too profit-focused to have any interest in that.

The problem is how to differentiate them. Right now the iPad is a giant iPhone with some additional capabilities. What it isn’t is a scaled down Mac. But as the OSs continue to merge it will be harder and harder to justify selling an iPad that’s basically the same hardware as a MacBook but can’t run anything close to MacOS.

I don‘t understand the faux-complexity argument. Nobody has to buy every Apple product line. Some people want both a laptop and a tablet. They have a wonderful range of choices right now. Powerful table and economical laptop? Sure. Powerhouse laptop and economical tablet. Also can be done. Mid range devices for both. Sure, that works too.

If it’s too complicated then maybe you just need to make a more informed purchasing decision.

Not a personal knock, the fact that you’re on the forum probably means that you’re capable of making those decisions. Some people are not, I realize that, but I don’t want my options limited because a small number of people don’t bother doing their due diligence. Maybe you really do find it too complicated, but I’m doubtful.

They are going to use the iPhone 15 strategy, cheaper models use optimized last gen SoC, while the Pro’s use the latest SoC.
Yep, and it looks like they are using the same strategy with the Macbooks also i.e. Not updating the MB Airs to base M3 chips last week. MBP get the latest M chips, MBA gets last gen M chip.

Given the lapse in iPad Air updates this year & much like the iMac... the iPad Air should jump from M1 to M3. If indeed iPad Pros go up in price because of OLED displays, the iPad Air coming in 2 sizes makes perfect sense to bridge the gap. The lineup will be setup just like the iPhone with iPhone 15/iPhone 15 Plus & iPhone 15 Pro/iPhone 15 Pro Max.
I’m now sure Apple will resist further distinguishing the Air and Pro by shifting the Air to 1 generation behind the Pro, unless somehow the Pro series chips can run fanless and there are no fanless pro chips yet.

I am literally itching to replace my 2018 12.9” (I know I prob say this in every thread lmao).

it’s going to be like night and day going from this to whatever is coming. hopefully a 14”!

Who wants an ipad

Coming from someone who has been using his iPad to teach in the classroom for the last 10 years, I am always in the market for a new iPad if it proves compelling enough. Currently, my 11” 2018 iPad Pro is still going strong, so it’s more a question of what the next update brings.

The A12x chip is just that good. Shame about their Smart Keyboard Folio constantly falling apart on me though.

Yep, it'll be face-lifted with M3 chip, space black and 2 TB storage.

Uhm… what?

I wasn’t talking about my personal preferences. I was referencing what we already know about Apple’s approach to these devices in terms of features and marketing.

Largest company in the world, obviously doing something right. Selling them by the truckload. But sure, tell us how they should really run the company top-down.

Apple plans to update its entire iPad lineup throughout 2024, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. This means new models of the iPad Pro, iPad Air, iPad mini, and entry-level iPad can be expected to launch next year.

Gurman touched on the lack of new iPads and AirPods heading into the holiday shopping season in the latest edition of his Power On newsletter:2023 is expected to be the first year without any new iPads released since Apple first unveiled the device in 2010, so updates to all models next year sounds likely.

When Each iPad Model Was Last Updated
  • iPad Pro: October 2022
  • iPad: October 2022
  • iPad Air: March 2022
  • iPad mini: September 2021
Gurman previously reported that the low-end to mid-range iPads could be updated as early as March 2024, while he expects new 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro models with the M3 chip and OLED displays to launch in the first half of 2024. The next iPad Air and iPad mini are likely to be equipped with M2 and A16 Bionic chips, respectively.

They have taken a massive hit in the education sector. Would be nice to see them expanding into school systems like they use to. But chromebooks have demolished iPad sales in that segment.

I miss the old Apple,..the one that innovated with customers in mind. Not the corporate hog only beholden to its shareholders it's become. Gurman is 100% right when he says that the only lever Apple has, is to raise prices..

Having just read that Tim Cook refused to appear at Apples first Apple Watch meeting held by Ive, I shouldn't be suprised. Remember, he's not a "product guy", but all about numbers.
Hopefully 2024 is his last year.
