They use Google Cloud Platform mostly from what I've heard, but it's kinda secret. They probably use AWS for some things too.

They use Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and likely other hosting services and tools. Good they they have a mix.

It's concerning that so much of iCloud was affected all at once, not to mention retail services.

Major first world issue here. Think what would happen if the internet had the kill switch so many governments want. Apple goes down, a guy can’t get his watch fixed, it’s the Apocalypse! Abandon all hope ye who enter here says the sign on every Apple store.
I think you mean use the switch governments and others have. Look at the Verizon BGP misroute last week to see how easy it is.

It's a wakeup call. Netflix is known for handling outages very well due to their decentralization, even causing outages on purpose just to keep themselves honest. But... all they do is serve websites. I can't even imagine how complicated Apple's operations are.

Netflix does more than serve websites. The Netflix app on AppleTV and other set top boxes is not delivered as a website, but as data streams that are parsed. Similar to serving a website, but not identical.

Either way, the right mix of caching can allow them to handle massive amounts of traffic with great reliability.

TBH why are they opened on the fourth of July... I mean Amerika right... I hated working on the fourth of July for the six or seven customers that would come in. I know sometimes that it was the fault of the mall but apple has to have some influence on this..

Apple maintains it's own servers for iCloud operational services such as authentication, encryption, orchestration, etc. They use other cloud providers you mentioned for data storage. If I'm not mistaken, they no longer use Microsoft though, only Google and Amazon - and potentially some other players.

Of course, the one time in about two years I try to log into iCloud photos on Apple TV to show vacation pics to family aaaannnd....iCloud is down.

Everyone: maybe a sign no one gives a rat's %#$ about your crappy vacation photos and life.

Me: Probably.

I'm disappointed to hear that Apple's retail operations are affected. Clearly they have not separated things from iCloud enough and one-point-of-failure is affecting lots of services and operations.
That’s actually good for users of their Internet services - any outage that affects their bottom line will be fixed ASAP.

We had 9,229,290 attacks in the last 24 hours analysed by Akamai (not Fox News). None came from Iran. Get software/analysis sources that will show you where the attacks are coming from. I don't want to give/promote you any here. I can tell you: Iran is not. Just politician talk. Iran is threatening more than it can really harm.

Damn, I was honestly just joking around.

Yes, before I heard about the earthquake I typed one thing in my post:

"Iran."

That was just a joke. Once I heard about the earthquake (then aftershocks) I changed my post too:

"I said something about Iran but this was before I knew about the earthquake that hit California.

However, Iran they did say they were going to hit us with cyber attacks.

God bless the people going through this earthquake. May everyone be safe & sound!"

So, I am not sure why you seemed to be mad at me for referring to Iran? I do not do that silly sarcasm thing that I think goes like this.../s? So maybe I should have made it more clear that I was just joshin' around. Sorry if offended you.

I would love to know which software/analysis sources you are using, as that would be something I would be very interested in.

Please PM me and let know, I would greatly appreciate it!

Have a great evening and Happy 4th of July!

"The company says only that 'some' users are affected, but social media reports suggest the outage is fairly widespread."

To be fair, that's about the worst metric one can possibly use. Social media always makes things look like a huge issue, because it's easy to find a couple hundred people who complain about something on Twitter and then do a write up and proclaim it a movement.

Exactly. Apple has over 1 billion users, yet MR makes it out like there's a massive conspiracy based on "social media" reports. Even if 100,000 people posted on twitter that their account was down, that would still be less than 1/10th of one percent of all users.

So much for being a "services company" now.

C'mon. No system can be 100% reliable. 5 Nines (99.999% up) is exceptional and I'd bet Apple is in that range. This must have been a biggie given the breadth of services effected and they fixed it within 12 hours. And they will learn lessons. (Stuff) happens.
