UFOs? Sunspots? Coronal Mass ejection? Cosmic rays? ...How about just coincidence?

Netflix does more than serve websites. The Netflix app on AppleTV and other set top boxes is not delivered as a website, but as data streams that are parsed. Similar to serving a website, but not identical.

Either way, the right mix of caching can allow them to handle massive amounts of traffic with great reliability.
I don't know what major tech corp has a static website nowadays. I meant that Netflix isn't dealing with physical servers like cloud providers do or selling devices in physical stores like Apple does. Even the video streaming isn't very complicated. If they just had a messaging app, it'd already be harder to keep that running reliably.

They use Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and likely other hosting services and tools. Good they they have a mix.

It's concerning that so much of iCloud was affected all at once, not to mention retail services.
All I know is, if certain parts of GCP go down, the entirety of iCloud goes down, or at least that happened recently. I doubt the mix has to do with reliability, might be more about picking better/cheaper tools for certain tasks.

So if something doesn’t affect their bottom line Apple takes their time fixing the issue?

Sometimes, years. But, if it impacts the bottom line, they are likely to get people on it much more quickly.

However, Iran they did say they were going to hit us with cyber attacks.

I'm curious if Iran said that, or the warmonger neocons that seem in control of the USA said that Iran said that. If the latter, they probably just want to cover their bases (especially after the drone getting shot down routine didn't work out as they'd hoped).

Your theory is that Tim Cook personally supervises the servers including on the 4th of July?

It is probably more that since Tim is an operations person, he would be thinking more along those lines for the aspects of the company operation that would impact such things. But, I suppose supply-chain operations and IT-operations, are a bit different.

C'mon. No system can be 100% reliable. 5 Nines (99.999% up) is exceptional and I'd bet Apple is in that range.

I don't know the stats, but they certainly haven't been in the past. Credit where credit is due... they have improved a ton over the last decade or so (in this regard).

Your data is safe and accessible in "the cloud"....trust us.

Um, yeah. :) I like to use cloud services, but I don't really trust them. Maybe that's just my former data operations self coming out.

I like cloud backup and archival. The sync'ing stuff, and especially how Apple seems to go with an all-or-nothing approach, I'm less of a fan. And, purely cloud stuff? I wouldn't use it with anything critical (w/o some backup plan).

And, Apple isn't the only one. I recently switched to 1Password, and I'm fairly uncomfortable with their 'trust us' on the backup/archive stuff. I like to maintain my own copy and backup. Apparently, there is actually a local copy (ie: it's there when you can't connect), but I'm still putting an overly high amount of trust in their syncing mechanism not messing up, or stuff like that. I don't like that.

With Apple, I archive my address book and calendar periodically. I don't like/use their photo, music, etc. services anymore. I don't use their keychain. etc. Pick and choose, and try not to trust any of it too much, IMO.

Apple today is experiencing problems with a host of iCloud-related services, as outlined on the company's system status page. Affected services include all of the basic iCloud services, as well as services like Find My Friends, Find My iPhone, Game Center, Photos, and Screen Time.

The company says only that "some" users are affected, but social media reports suggest the outage is fairly widespread.

Apple is also having problems with its retail store systems, with a number of users reporting that employees are unable to complete customer purchases or support requests.

Update: Apple Cash, Apple Pay card management, and Mail Drop are now also affected.

Update 2: According to Apple's system status page, all issues have been resolved.

Well, the contents of our Calendar are still messed up. Even the content of our Calendar when logged in to icloud.com is messed up. Much of what we had there is not showing. So, no, "all issues" have not been resolved.

It seems like almost every other day there are outages for one major internet service or another. Makes me wonder if there are some larger cyber attacks by Russia, China, Iran, or someone else going on. But no one is saying anything in the government or the companies to prevent stocks from falling or create panic.

I think "can't get my watch fixed' is flying off the rails a bit there but.. you know..

It's the internet...

There is pretty much an infinite list of inconsequential items that don't affect Apples bottom line that could be addressed and might take years.

Apple would be foolish not (and I'm sure they do) to have a plan and escalation procedures in place for all online outages as it has a direct and indirect affect on the company and it's customers.
