I get the point you’re trying to make here, but that part is simply not true.

In fact, Apple has never once gone 4 years without increasing RAM in an iPhone line- both for flagship and “non-pro” lines. (longest stretch was 3 years).

On average, Apple increases the iPhone’s RAM every 1.88 years.
I said iOS devices… (but I know iPad has its own OS now… but I was generalizing about devices based off of iOS)… youre right about iPhone but I was referring to iOS devices in general.

And in any case. They would have known about this memory requirement for AI for a long time. But still they haven’t updated devices to be compatible with a flagship feature.

But their job isn’t to future proof devices. But make money. It makes sense from a business perspective to make a device just good enough at its time of release… and not preparing it for a major feature released the following year. It’s business.

It's obviously a scheme to stop people from buying the current iPhones for 3 months.
The current 15 models. You’re fine with the 15 Pros.
Furthermore I don’t really think that the vast majority of „basic“ user will care as much as some people in a forum like this.

From what I’ve seen Apple AI won’t be released until next year. By that time we may be halfway to the iPhone 17 release. I was contemplating getting a new iPad with an M series chip, but I’ll probably wait for next years iPad. Or at that time get the current generation at a discount.

So with +30 years of experience, you write gibberish like this? You should get a least some minimal knowledge about LLMs.

I am not here to engage in a pissing contest and I am also not here to flash my credentials. I have knowledge about programming LLMs, more specifically algorithms and data structures for massive datasets amongst other things. I have no vested interest - other than pointing out the obvious. You just have to take my word for it.

By the look of things, it seems that you have no trouble in believing Apple's excuses. Oh well...

Seems like a huge ressource hog. Not in general but in relation to iPhones. Their LLM purportedly uses 3gb of RAM. Seems like the 15pro is going to lose 38% of useable ram (e.g. 1Gb less left than the 6gb of the regular 15) plus an unspecified amount of CPU speed and running time. It‘s good then that Apple AI won‘t have all features until well into the lifecycle of the iPhone 16 and probably won‘t have them rolled out internationally until well into the lifecycle of the 17 - so anybody who does not yet have a 15 can use their iphones a little longer.

The lack of understanding of relative compute power of end users turning into conspiracy theories...
Lol how saying that company wants to make money is a conspiracy? I think conspiracy would be to claim apple wants us all to buy as little as possible so our little wallets are happy 😊

The first is just obvious and like if you think they aren’t milking the most they can then wake up lol. It’s a ruthless behemoth with seldom but the next quarter in mind.

We all signed the pact with the devil for convenience so let’s not be surprised when it sucks on our blood. It was in the contract.

Edit: yeah it’s ram but who puts little ram in our devices? Santa Claus? Nope apple. You think they couldn’t just slap 16 GB for 7 more cents? No, they will put 8gb so they can have opportunities as this to get people to buy new thing. Planned obsolescence without riling up eu regulators.

I'm betting it's the RAM mostly. All you people that have defended that lackluster ram in Apple devices where you at?

I'm also really curious to see what the IP16 has under the hood there.... bet it will be a nice bump - and considering 70% of budget Android devices have 8GB of ram these days....

Apple saying that this isn't a scheme to sell knew iPhones is hilarious. Of COURSE it is. If it wasn't, then every phone, iPad and Mac that can take the update should be able to run "Apple Intelligence" I just wish they were honest with their customers and stop trying to be a "caring" company.
I'm usually the first person to smack down Apple for their greed and misdeeds, but....

Apple sells older iPhone models for several years - and they are a HUGE HUGE HUGE portion of iPhone sales. Not everyone has $800-$1600 for a phone.

Backwards compatibility with a few generations WOULD still sell more iPhones. Case in point - number one selling model last year was the prior years model. A 2 generation old model sold crap tons.

The things that companies make up to get you to buy their products 🤦‍♂️

With iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, Apple is introducing a new personalized AI experience called Apple Intelligence that uses on-device, generative large-language models to enhance the user experience across iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Apple-WWDC24-Apple-Intelligence-hero-240610.jpg

These new AI features require Apple's latest iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models to work, while only Macs and iPads with M1 or later chips will support Apple Intelligence. Since the news came to light, many users have been asking what the reason is for the cut-off.

In The Talk Show Live From WWDC 2024, Daring Fireball's John Gruber put the question to Apple's AI/machine learning head John Giannandrea, marketing chief Greg Joswiak, and software engineering chief Craig Federighi, and this was the response.
Apple's software engineering chief Craig Federighi said that the company's first move with any new feature is to work out how to bring it back to older devices as far as possible. But when it comes to Apple Intelligence, "This is the hardware that it takes... It's a pretty extraordinary thing to run models of this power on an iPhone," he added.

The iPhone 15 Pro models use the A17 Pro chip, which has a 16-core Neural Engine that's up to 2x faster than the A16 chip found in the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, performing nearly 35 trillion operations per second. Federighi hinted that RAM is also another aspect of the system that the new AI features require, so it is perhaps no coincidence that all the devices compatible with Apple Intelligence have at least 8GB of RAM.

Despite the cutoff, owners of older iPhones still have plenty to look forward to in Apple's upcoming software update: iOS 18 boasts several new features besides Apple Intelligence, and every iPhone that can run iOS 17 is compatible iOS 18. That includes the iPhone XR from 2018.

If you still want Apple Intelligence in your pocket but don't have an iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max, you may want to hold out for the iPhone 16 series, which is expected to launch when iOS 18 is released in the fall.

Yes, this scumbag company, put the same CPU in the iPhone 14 Pro Max as it had in the 13 promax, they knew they were going to do this and so they ditched a new CPU in the 14 promax because they didn't want that Support this Apple intelligent garbage, I hope everybody who owns a 14 promax sue Apple for ripping them off, most customers wouldn't have understood that this was coming, if they had have done who would've bought a 14 pro Max knowing it wouldn't have supported Apple intelligence? Nobody.

but everybodys talking about ai, I can't fall behind
all the cool kids in my class will have one, i have to have it
then jenny will finally notice me and fight with monica over who I like more
I'll wear sunglasses all the time and be the coolest guy in school
mooooooom

I thought they were using ChatGPT, which runs in the cloud? Even if it runs on-device, it could run in the cloud, which would make it device-agnostic? I know, I know "privacy", but apparently it does send "more complex queries" to the cloud? Why not send everything to the cloud on older devices?

Definitely money grab to sell the next iPhone. AI is the new hype term, apple's trying to cash in to bump the sales.

It's PR ********. It's just about the RAM - 8GB minimum. There are so many recent researches, that proves A17 Pro NPU is not much faster than previous year. 35 TOPS, but measured in INT8. A16, A15 ects are measured in FP16. So basically A17 Pro is 17.5 TOPS in FP16 vs A16's 17.

Also the "poor" M1 is just A14 with 2 more P cores. It's using the same old 11 TOPS NPU, but sure... no problem to run AI.

This channel is researching the topic deeply btw. It's in french mostly, so you have to use the translator.
Wow this is a great use of data to call out Apple’s marketing BS.

This really makes it a Siri/iPhone 4s moment all over again.

Apple Explains iPhone 15 Pro Requirement for Apple Intelligence

As long as Tim Cook is CEO, "Apple Intelligence" will be a contradiction in terms.

This is so bad, Apple Intelligence will be limited to only very few users owning iP15 Pro+.
The majority of ALL smartphone users (i guess 98%) will be cut off from Apple Intelligence at launch (late 2024).
What does this mean in market dominance if almost all iPhone users (iP15 or lower) have to use another AI app service?

...or they just won't use it, won't care, and will continue on with their life as usual.

That's where I am.
