Is should have started...

...but the US and UK Apple Stores are still open as normal.

This has been commented on several times already, but Apple really do need a cheap desktop. I'd hope they'd replace the eMac with a monitorless machine, nice and neat, and allowing those with existing monitors to get a mac very cheaply. The eMac currently costs $799, remove the monitor, add a larger hard drive, and voila, a great Mac for say $699. At that price a 1.25GHz G4 is fine (for now).

There will be lots of debate if this occurs tomorrow :p

Ooops. I thought it was the 31st today! My bad. Clearly we need telepathic iCal (transmits your diary to your brain directly).

Those of you hoping for a Powerbook revision at the expo are on crack. There's no way Apple will rev the Powerbooks this soon. Going by their typical release schedule, I would say that November would be the soonest an update could be expected. I doubt that the dual core chips are ready. Freescale has only announced that they are going to be making a presentation about their new chips. There is no information indicating that they are actually in production. My guess would be that either Apple will wait till Jan and then release a new model PB. If that isn't feasible, they'll release in incremental rev sometime near November and wait till later in the year for the new model.

I know, I know, what proof do I have for all of this. There isn't any proof, it just makes sense. Besides, It's much more likely than the overly optimistic predictions some seem to be making on this board.

Because no one is buying the current lineup.
I suppose Apple is sending you their daily sales reports. From what I've seen on message boards, plenty of people seem to by buying them. Besides, even if that was the case, Apple can not release a major new rev until their suppliers are ready to supply them with the hardware. G5's in PB's are currently out of the question, and the dual core chips are not in production yet. So there you go, NO REV.

I just want new Powerbooks to come out, G4 or G5, I don't care if it's January (my bday month woo :p )

What dont they have that you need? Faster bus/clock? (sure we all would like that). What else do they lack?

The current model is fine for what I need, I just don't like buying things close to the next revision. Since I am only a student, it's hard for me to save enough money to buy my dream machine, so I just want to make sure it'll last me long enough :).
Also with these rumors of the Dual-Core G4's... I want to wait too see what happens with them...

Mystic banner ad in german online store

Hi there,

i just stumbled across a strange advertisement on the webpage of a german online store: When i go to http://www.cyberport.de/ the page presents a banner-ad titled "Music in the Store!" (subtitle: "Music Days im Cyberport Store.").

The ad shows a 4G iPod embraced by a score with an AirPort Express sitting right next to it. The text left to the iPod says (roughly translated): "What does an iPod sense, when Aiport Express is coming closer?" [german: "Was spürt ein iPod wenn ihm Airport Express näherkommt?"]. The announced date is September 2nd/3rd.

I am probably just paranoid :p , but the title could be a subtle innuendo to the iTMS and the setup indicates a WLan connection between both units, thus (maybe) enabling the iPod to directly access the iTMS via AirPort Express without the need for a Computer to sit "in the middle". :D

This makes absolutely sense for me and fits the picture of the iPod as a "musical lifestyle hub" of its own.

Remember that 'wireless firewire' I don't how it would work, but it may come into play with an iPod update for wireless connectivity - (probably Mac only) :D.

AAAAAAGGGHHHH!!!!

Stop!

Everyone who keeps talking about "wireless FireWire" without ever reading up about it, just... STOP!

That whole rumor was based on IEEE certification of the FireWire data protocal over an upcoming and unreleased 802 wireless format called 802.15.3. The new standard is only 1Mbit/s faster than existing 802.11g, but will scale with time to something like 200 or 400Mbit/s after about three years.

Thus, in 2007 or 2008, we might see a wireless standard that's as fast as what people think of when they hear FireWire (and that's the older, IEEE 1394A "FireWire 400") today. It doesn't transmit power, it's not as fast as current FireWire.

It's not a magic bullet. Leave. it. alone!

Interesting find! Could be a third party attachement?

Oh? The Dual-Core G4s? Yeah, they're using them to build Decepticons. Last I heard at least...

The "Cram and Jam" promotion is kind of like molester candy from Apple though. As much as I want to sell my current Powerbook and buy a 15" model, it just feels like bad jujus...

"Look, practically free iPod with purchase of notebook!"-Apple

"Oooooooooohhhh, pretty! You know, my 1G 10GB is kinda crapping out. Plus, I've always kind of debated getting that 15" instead! And now, with such a cheap iPod, I'd be crazy to say no! Sign me-Wait a minute! Does this mean the second I buy this because of the cheap iPod, you're going to release something better so that I have to ebay this computer and iPod to afford the new thingy?"-guy

"Yes! I mean, NO!. Heavens no. We just think a cool fella like you deserves a cheap iPod with that notebook. What's so suspicious about that?"-Apple

"So it's really not a trick then this time? Because I don't like tricks..."-guy

"No comment."-Apple Legal

*4G iPod released the next day*

It's like when you buy a video game console, after months of debating it, your friends finally convince you with the "now or never" line...and the day after you get it, the price is cut by $100 and your friends are like, "..could've told you that man. Jesus, don't you know what 'the internet' is?"

New Powerbooks seem unlikely. But then again, the "Cram and Jam" promotion is just so suspicious...

And besides, they released the 4G iPod in the middle of this promotion! Who's to say they won't release the rumored '60GB iPod' with special 'pro' features on Tuesday, just to screw over the guys that bought the 4G to laugh at the guys who got screwed over and bought the 3G. ;)

Can I join in on the prediction game? :)

- New iMac G5. Star of the show. New form factor, G5, other speed bumps, nice big juicy LCD's. Announced today, shipping starts next month. It will be gorgeous.
- iPod 4th generation. Something exciting is announced about the newest iPods. A new feature is tapped into. As others have said, this will piss on Microsofts strawberries :)
- OS X Tiger. A couple of updates and new features but not conrete shipping date.
- Something else. Perhaps something involving wireless/iPods/Tablets, though I'm tempted to say it's something we've not really guessed at.
- No web stream, but MacRumors will get live text updates. A web stream will be available hours after the event, or the next day.

Wierd Co-incidence or not but I start my new job at an Apple Centre tomorrow :) :) :) Bad news is that I wont be able to follow the keynote, unless they permit me check this site.

iMac tonight?

There has been speculation Apple might announce the new iMac as early as tonight. This is a vaild argument as Apple surely wants to get as much publicity as possible. So if they annouce it tonight, the US press can report about it in tomorrow's editions, if they wait until the kenyote, they'll have to wait until the day after tomorrow to spread the news. Even the electronic media probably will have more important stories to cover in their mornig news casts than the release of a new iMac. We'll see...

Assuming the new iMac is released and assuming it's aluminium, I hope we get a keyboard and mouse combo (that will match my soon to be ordered G5 2.5ghz PM :) ).

Keyboard: USB2 for cabled use and charging / wireless / dedicated Exposé keys

Mouse: Re-charging USB2 dock (can be plugged into KB) / 2 buttons (minimum) / scroll wheel based on iPod click wheel (patented for a mouse/input device earlier this year I beleive)

I'm quite happy with my one button mouse but I know that switchers and many mac users find it frustrating. Also (though I'm not certain) Motion and Shake REQUIRE 2 buttons minimum. On this one it's time to stop thinking different.

The 12" PB's GFX card sucks really really bad.. A new one of those would be nice. I won't buy a current PB.. im holding out for an update. The 5200 is just madness, I would be stupid to buy that now.

The cram and Jam doesn't finish for a while, so my guess is that there will be no PB update until after this offer ends.

"Offer expires November 2nd, 2004"
http://www.apple.com/uk/education/cramandjam/

:(

When and where exactly will the expo be avalible to stream for our viewing pleasure then?

The "wireless keyboard" will be a virtual keyboard on the detachable screen tablet :p :p

From the buyer's guide:

Product: PowerBook
Last Release: April 19, 2004
Days Since Update: 133 (Average = 171)
Recommendation: Neutral - Mid product cycle

That points to the first week of October if they're updated in an average manner. Of course, it's wishful thinking on my part. ;)

And if Apple marketing is not sleeping, it will not be a supercomputer in your monitor of a supercomputer on the wall. What comes after that? a supercomputer in the fridge? under the couch? on the porch?

that would be stupid.

HOW ABOUT A SUPERCOMPUTER, HDTV COMBO ON A 30 " SCREEN

BLUETOOTH KEYBOARD AND WIRELESS MOUSE AND REMOTE CONTROL
THAT YOU ENJOY FROM YOUR FAVORITE EASY CHAIR ?

I am really hoping for an iLife update with a new 6th application...so far thats where Apple really makes my day.

I am ready for a new iPhoto that doesn't SUCK!

I love iMovie and iDVD. These are the 2 reasons I own a Mac! But, for digital photography, editing/organizing, nothing beats MS Digital Image Suite... The image organizing really shines... Keywords, date changes, captions, ratings... ALL STORES in the EXIF information on each photo AND in a database...

Loose the database? No problem, just recatalog the photos...

Moving some photos to another PC... No Problem, just recatalog the photos...

Also, it allows me to place the photos in a directory structure that makes sence to me!

Bring on a new iPhoto and I will dump my XP machine once and for all...
