I believe the "i" was meant to have a dual meaning, "Internet" and "I".

That is correct. A kind of subliminal, dual context signifying "internet" and "i" for personalization and consumer friendliness/ease of use to get on the internet with a personable/non-intimidating computer. It was 1998. It was barely in '97 that "WWW.(whatever).com" started becoming popular. I remember seeing the first highway billboards with that on it and wondering what it was.

Before '97*, the internet was mostly being used by consumers mostly just for email and chatting.

*Under the Clinton/Gore administration. Don't give me any of that "Gore said he invented the internet" junk. I know he misworded his statement and was only implying that he in large part was responsible for giving the general public access to it, which is true.

remember my post about the intel ibook.

freaking macrumors.com deleted it, biatch!

anyway... believe me or not, my info was from the inside.
If you mean this post from last month, it was not deleted. By "release in April" did you mean announced in April or first shipping in April?

There are only a few rumors listed as being possible for tomarrow .. like the iPod Boombox, and the Intel Mini .. but those aren't really special and don't tie in with the iCal icon in the invite. I think something else completely different will come and take us all offguard.
Yep, looprumors says whatever will be released will be 'very cool', unhelpful I know but perhaps a new product is in line.

The change to iCEO came well after iMac introduction.

That is incorrect. He became iCEO [interim CEO] in '97 when Gil Amelio was ousted in favor of SJ and as Apple was on the verge of bankruptcy. He dropped the "i" in '99. The iMac was introduced in '98.

Nop!!!

he was iCEO almost 1 year before the first i product :p

In 1997, Apple bought NeXT bringing him back to Apple. In 1997 he also became Apple's interim CEO (iCEO)

iMac Bondi Blue introduced Jan 1998.
IBook introduced Jul 1999
iPod (5GB) introduced Oct 2001

Hence the iMac, iBook Etc.Etc.. :D

Think about that. "on the verge of bankruptcy" ALOT of things would be different right now. That would have sucked!

There is so much possibility for tomorrow. My list includes;

Video iPod (with camera?) or Video Touchscreen iPod/PDA
iPhone (iPod Phone Camera)
iPod with wireless and wireless headphones / Wireless headphones and dongle for all dock connecting ipods - iPods break free -> new add ;)
Mac Mini MediaCentre
Airport Express Video
New streaming for all audio content not just iTunes with existing devices
Boombox (Wireless music thingy)
BT Mighty Mouse
New multimedia Apple wireless keyboard - maybe with LCD/OLED special keys
New revamp 13" iBook (isight etc)
New HD iSight (for Pros)
Apple LCD/Plasma TV
Apple Tablet Device - must have Apple device of the year
iPod Shuffle with OLED screen (perhaps not anymore now we have 1 gig iPod nano)
Promo iPod(s) - Red/Pink (Madonna/Aids etc)
Downloadable movies (USA only?)
New BT/Wireless iPod dock/attachment for iTunes wireless control or dedicated wifi controller thingy with screen? (Very cool if attached to back of a nano)
New super cool and tough Apple iPod cases...yeah we screwed up but here you go
New 80/100 gig iPods
New 6/8 Gig iPod Nano and price shuffle
New fun software for using with your iSight - avatars to mimic facial movements in iChats?

The Bondi iMac was released in '98 while Steve was Interim CEO (not iCEO), and I think some of the intro slides to SteveNotes have him listed as iCEO around that period, but when he dropped the "Interim" title at MWSF 2000 (one more thing!) he said 'Somebody once called me the iCEO a year ago, and I like that so I'm gonna choose that as my title if it's okay with you - to remind myself of what's really important, which is of course, the internet.'

So technically unless anyone knows of him dropping it later, means that Steve Jobs is in fact STILL the 'iCEO' of Apple Computer. Also it proves that the 'i' is for internet, and that iCEO was taken from iMac

Your timeline sounds good to me, but I swear he made a joke on-stage, adding the "i" to make iCEO, some time AFTER the iMac introduction. (Before that there wouldn't have even been a joke to make.)

I think the proper order is this:

1. Jobs becomes Interim CEO (NOT iCEO).

2. iMac introduced. The first "i."

3. Jobs makes a joke of changing Interim CEO to the iMac-like abbreviation "iCEO."

4. Jobs later drops the "i" and becomes full CEO.

EDIT: re above post--great minds think alike :) But Jobs DID officially drop the "i"--in fact, I think he used that very phrase. He has been "real" CEO, not "interim" or "i," for years now.

I assume one day he will retire and take on the title Xceo :)

actually that's not quite correct either.

ameilo was ousted in 1997 and jobs was installed by the board as interim ceo. both he and the board maintained they were searching for ceo. jobs even wrote a memo to the employees of pixar telling them he would not become apple's ceo. then in 2000 he announced that he was dropping the interim from his title and taking over as full-time ceo. he made a joking reference to the fact he would now be the iCEO.

The stock price was at an all time low but they had something like 4 Billion in the bank at the time so they were hardly on the verge of bankruptcy. The Microsoft investment was purely symbolic as they made a lot of money off the Mac version of Office. They also settled their long standing lawsuit behind the scenes. The media just loved to make things sound worse than they were. Even after the iMac was introduced and the stock took off it was still all doom and gloom. The "beleaguered" Apple Computer.

I agree that if Gil Amelio had stayed they would have eventually burned through that money and there probably would be no Apple at all today. At best we would probably be running something based on BeOS and OS 8 with little third party support.

Time Zones

Well, it's alright for some...

I read 10 AM and thought - great! I'll catch it at dinner!!!

Oh no, that's Eastern Time - 8 hour difference here in the UK.

So about 7 PM for me when it'll be all wrapping up :D

Still, can't wait - Bring on the new MacBooks!

He officially dropped "interim" at Macworld SF 2000 but kept the "i" in "iCEO" because he liked the way it looked and thought it was cute. At the time he mentioned it stood for internet but today, as with all models starting with the letter, it has no real meaning.

If Apple releases some brand new products unrelated to the iPod "universe" i would be glad:) , because iPods are now old in the way that almost each kid has one and having an iPod is no more something special.
I hope we won't be dissappointed to see announcements like : Music Store has now cool full-length films or here is the new add-on for your iPods *yawn*.
I think Apple should detach and turn back to the computer world by releasing what everybody expects (or almost ;-) ) : a table-Mac or a PocktMac with wireless. If Microsoft releases this "10inch Pc" product tonight with the Origami project, they will be a step ahead and what Apple will release will be "Apple's answer to Microsoft": result : we will have a new (hopefully benefic) fight, but only benefic if Apple releases the same product within the next weeks...

Intel Mac Mini

Rumor has it. The New Intel Mac Mini will include a Screen and Keyboard. Around $600.

m$ is only showcasing a project in development. I also believe that they may have bumped this announcement to the same day as Apple's because they may know that Apple is further down the line in actually shipping a product of this nature.

Kind of like microsoft jumping up and down and shouting, "Look! We got one too!... and we promise to keep our release deadline on this as accurate as we have with windows XP SP3... ahem... Vista!"

hahahaha....... what joke.
so many I-s...

New item list:

i-chick,
i-booty,

The funny thing would be if, out of that list, they release...nothing! Oh, yeah, the NEW .Mac with 5Gb of storage!!! ;)

Apple to SUPPORT ADC AGAIN!

Just dreaming about a built to order option for the new intel Powermacs to also include a built to order video card with ADC support for all us suckers who bought Apple displays for thousands of dollars who now wish to upgrade their system but don't think they should have to buy a new display!

Moral of the story...
Don't trust Apple with proprietary interface technology.

As I sit here with my Dual 1 GIG G4 Mirror door with 2 (apple) firewire ports and my ipod nano running blazzing fast on my USB 1.1 instead of 2.0!

nope, nope, nope.
If that was true the whole originlal thinking behind the Mac mini went out of the window - it BYODKM remember? And with the costs of the new chips involoved this will never happen. $600 - with an Apple branded screen, keyboard and mouse? Not a chance. Do your math - the cost doesnt add up and Apple would be making a huge loss on each sale. Plus if this is to be a media Mac why the hell would I want a bundled display when its destined to be plugged into a HDTV?

Dumbest "rumour" yet.

I totally agree. I was only asking if he was serious so that if he sad "Yes", I could say "LIAR!!!".

Apple is not impressing me right now

I consider myself "agnostic" as far as the MAC goes. I use Windows, Linux and MAC depending on the use case. I bought a MAC Powerbook for my portable use because it was a lightweight portable Unix box for development reasons. I also like to do digital photography and the Powerbook is good enough for a bit of digital photo processing in the field. The powerbook, although a bit underpowered compared to my PC desktop, is a nice unit. Unfortunately it’s headed for the Apple “EOL” sector. In fact the 15” is already in that category.

I had been awaiting the first Intel based laptops since the announcement and frankly, I'm not all that impressed. I want to be, but I'm just not. There are several features to like but the ones that are chilling me:

Smaller screen
Less ports: Firewire, S-Video
Lees featuered DVD/CD/Burner
Less performance on apps I use such as Adobe Photoshop CS2

Now I believe Adobe will eventually come out with a new version of this app within the year but by then, maybe Apple will come out with a bit more compelling piece of hardware to run this kind of app on. By then, the new hardware should have about the same price point and the Rev ½ MBPs will be “old news”.

I’m REALLY hoping that Apple will plesently supprise me tomorrow with something that will truly excite me in the laptop product line. I really want to be impressed!

Meanwhile I’m glad I purchased the extended warranty!
