50 megabit is really something you need in a phone. For all your Bluray downloads to the phone :roll eyes:

I had 3G year 2000. 384Kbit. Today 3G manages 21Mbit. With data caps, why do we need 50 megabit? Streaming 4K movies to the phone?

I don't know where you live, but in my area LTE is nowhere near 50 megabit. Maybe on paper but not on the street. No need to be sarcastic, your free to enjoy your 3G. And using your logic, why do we need internet on our phones anyway?

OMG!!! i am ready..this is gonna be the big one.... the iphone to end all iphones... i am ready.. i think i will keep my 4 to use as an ipod in my car..

A year and 8 months is still a long time

[...] Speculation on Apple's next-generation iPhone launch timing has been split, with some observers suggesting that the iPhone 4S was an anomaly for Apple and that it will return to the usual mid-year timeframe, while others have suggested that moving back to the mid-year launch would make for an extremely short lifecycle for the iPhone 4S.

How, exactly, is 1 year and 8 months an "extremely short lifecycle"?
Presumably Apple will offer the 4S in all of 2012 plus six months of 2013 in addition to the last two months of 2011.
That's 20 months instead of the 24 months Apple will likely be offering the 2009 3GS.
24 months - 20 months = 4 months less
(4 months / 24 months) ~= 0.1667
Thus the 4S will probably be around for barely 17% less time than the old 3GS (and all subsequent models.)

Oh, and the 4 month delay in releasing the 4S was probably due to a combination of
the Verizon iPhone engineering effort and the tsunami/earthquake damage to component suppliers.
All hopefully only one-time occurrences.

NO NO NO!!!, you got it all wrong

Spring: iPad
Summer: WWDC: Show of iPhone and iOS
Fall: APPLE 42" TV!
Then rinse and repeat :D
you get it wrong too!

it's...
Spring: shut up and take my money!
Summer: shut up and take my money!
Fall: shut up and take my money!
Winter: shut up and take my money!
Then rinse and repeat

teardrop form factor

I was looking forward to the return of the teardrop form factor. I doubt it will be the same shape as the iphone 4, just bigger. There is going to be some radical difference in the form of the hardware that Apple is planning to use to entice buyers

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A405 Safari/7534.48.3)

Not obtuse. iPhone 4 was named so because it was the fourth. Maybe the next will be named LTE, not 5 or 6.

Have you played with the Android phone name generator?

http://androidphonenamegenerator.com

I personally want an HTC Amaze Slide Prime Plus+ 4G LTE.

Sounds good! iPhone 5 with LTE in a few months.

No way. Unless Apple has been working on their own LTE modem, the 2nd gen LTE radios (Qualcomm MDM9160--I think that's the model) aren't even out yet; rumored for Q2-Q3 release, so devices would come 3-6 months after that.

I actually doubt the iPhone 5 will have LTE; Apple usually likes to wait a generation behind others before implementing a new tech. They like to wait for something to mature. That's my take.

I also doubt they will use a 4" screen. I'm pretty sure it was here that it was shown a 4" screen would require a change in resolution to either maintain "Retina" status or to keep aspect ratio/rumored dimensions.

A 4" screen would seem like bowing to market pressure, and that's not characteristic of Apple. Just my thoughts...

I hope it has a solid, polycarbonate uni-body chassis like the new Nokia phones whose chassis are stained with the color, so that a scratch won't show up. Plus, I think it'll make the phone more durable than the current glass.

Polycarbonate OR Corning's new Lotus Glass.

PLEASE KEEP THE CAMERA MODULE and only upgrade the FFC!

Prediction

Here's my prediction so watch me later. They are gearing up well in advance and will mass produce for MONTHS before release so they can do the very first worldwide roll-out including China without buyers riots.

Apple's current meme is to lean so far forward they are the first to mass-market with all key technologies that leverage on their current ecosystem roadmap.

Some technologies are forsaken like LTE because first mover does not benefit them so much as carriers. LTE while faster, mainly allows for less time on network and more users. Apple's roundhouse is hardware not network.

The story about AT&T network experts quitting/being fired over objections to network congestion known to happen from an iPhone rollout without sufficient capacity confirms this. The government is doing everything possible to drag its feet from the rollouts carriers actually want to do, so they are stuck.

If the President or any layer of the FCC is reading this, please sign an executive order to exempt carriers from anti-trust and to allow them to negotiate to maximize spectrum usage and deployment in the short term.

They aren't listening. :(

Rocketman

Forward this to the FCC so they can read it then ignore it, then file it in the Federal Register so they can write a "response" that "addresses" it without in any way addressing any issue raised or any solution suggested. That's how they roll.

Wishlist: Primary still camera out the top end so you can have deep focus/zoom features.

Gruber just said this isn't true over on daringfireball.net. I only mention it because astute observers of Mac rumor Kremlinology know that Gruber is precise. When he's guessing, he says so. When he knows something, he makes it clear.

In his post, he simply said "No it's not", regarding the iPhone "gearing up for production." I think he's knows something, although it's still possible he's refuting the "gearing up" part, and not specifically the summer launch.

You may very well be right. LTE is gaining steam, at least with Verizon. But Apple may wait until it is more mainstream with all the carriers before implementing it. And we know that Apple won't implement it until the battery life is satisfactory. Time will tell.

I really hope the screen size doesn't get bigger, but many people seem to be falling for "bigger is better." Apple probably needs to increase the screen size to "compete," which is unfortunate for two reasons:

1: I don't want to carry a brick around in my pocket.

2: Dustin Curtis makes a good point about the screen size and usability of 3.5" vs bigger screens (http://dcurt.is/2011/10/03/3-point-5-inches/):

Image

With a 3.5" screen, your thumb can reach across the whole screen, thus the iPhone is a "one hand" device. When the screen size increases, you need to use two hands to reach the entire surface.

What I hope for and what could be done more or less if you look at that picture that Apple increases the size of the screen but keeps the size of the phone the same by reducing the size of the bezel.

Ummm. 2013? I thought we were debating 2012 June or 2012 October, which makes it either 8 months or 1 year...

I can only hope all your "doubts" are just wrong. Sometimes bowing to market pressure is the right thing to do.

Is it possible....

That his may just be more work on the iPad 3 coming out soon? I find it very "unreliable" to get info on the iPhone 5 before the iPad 3 has even been announced or a single rumor. :apple:

The 4S is selling extremelly well, why would Apple want to release a new phone so soon?

Uhmm.. The Samsung G2 HD has much better specs than the 4S, and was released months before.

Right. Apple doesn't believe that Specs are the key issue for consumer purchase decisions. However, there are silly conspiracy theories out there that Apple intentionally holds back hardware so that it can get people to upgrade later. Basically that means that folks think that Apple likes spotting its competitors hardware spec advantages. I believe Apple puts out the best hardware it can within its business model and consistent with its design plan.

Sure the iPhone 4S is selling great. But come August, if the iPhone 5 can be made at a reasonable cost and in large numbers, and if iOS 6 is ready, then Apple isn't going to just sit there and not bring out the new design. Especially not in the face of whatever bunch of androids have already come out this summer.

You know this is complete BS because it has all the tell-tales of being a compilation of fanboy wishes, reality be damned:

1) Launch less than a year after the launch of a previous generation when no iPhone has ever launched on such a shortened schedule before. Even though they're obsessed with the company, fanboys bizarrely ignore Apple's previous business patterns despite the fact that the schedule of Apple's product launches is one of the most predictable things about it. There is a financial motive to taking a year+ to launch a new product - it gives Apple the chance to recoup startup costs and drive down costs even more. Apple isn't going to give up that to fulfill fanboy "I want my toy now!" whining.

2) Bigger screen - the ultimate fanboy fantasy, regardless of the fact Steve Jobs - and Apple leadership - have been against it for the very good reason that it would undercut a great advantage of the iOS platform - the continuity and unity of iPhone apps across devices. No matter. Fanboys want their bigger screens and they'll believe any rumors that dangles it in front of them.

This is nothing more than a rehash and recycle of the then-Phone 5/4S rumors. It didn't happen with the 4S and it's not going to happen with the 5.

What has happened before is less and less relevant. The market is radically different now with massively increased competition. The 4s was clearly a stop gap measure &i expect they'll want to keep abreast with the market ASAP with the 5.

Re the larger screen - I don't think they're against it. They're just not keen on fragmentation. That means they'd need to either a. Maintain the pixel count or b. find another way to help developers build for both sizes at once.

Might be all fake. Might just be fanboy dreams...

But I'd be stoked for a new iPhone with LTE and a 4.0" screen.

4" screen at same 960x640 resolution so as not to screw up existing apps. Not sure why people think a slightly bigger screen must have more pixels. At 3.7" to 4.0" it'll still be well over 300 dpi and nicer than 95% of everything else on the market. No need for a 4.8" iPhone.

No need for a quad-core A6. Dual core CPU will be more than sufficient for a phone. I suspect stuffing a quad-core processor and an LTE radio in to a thin iPhone with any expectation of reasonable battery life will need to wait until 2013.

No reason it needs to run "iOS 6" either. A nice update to iOS 5, maybe say with an API for 3rd party Siri integration, would be just fine.

Why do people think Apple cares when you bought your iPhone and when your due for an upgrade. If they could they would sell users a new updated iPhone every other month because they know some Apple users are sheep and are willing to pay full boat. I haved learned this and will upgrade via the usual 2 year contract.

I think thats the idea. By the time iPhone 5 rolls around those with a 4 will upgrade. When the Iphone 5s is ready those with 4s will upgrade. When 6 arrives etc.

Keep the upgrade cycle going. There are still a lot of iPhone 4 out there and when their contracts are due they can go straight to 5.

I don't think it has much to do with sheep I think its more keeping people in a 2 year cycle of upgrading and not breaking a contract.

I'm okay with an iPhone 5 summer release, as long as the carriers are willing to work with us that got the iPhone 4S in October. I mean, the iPhone 4S was basically a filler. I love my 4S. The only reason I got it was because I wanted a white iPhone. My 4 was doing just fine.

I'm a day 1 iPhone 4 owner and wasn't eligible for an upgrade when the 4S was released. You signed a 2 year contract when you purchased a 4S.

The only reason I believe this is possible is because you have millions of iPhone 4 early adopters scheduled to come up on the end of their contract in a few months and it's conceivable that many will not want to wait until Apple decides to release a fall update of the iPhone and instead will gravitate to one of the many Android ICS phones that should be flooding the stores in the next few months. You only get one subsidized phone every 24 months, some may not want to wait to use it.

----------

I'm a day 1 iPhone 4 owner and wasn't eligible for an upgrade when the 4S was released. You signed a 2 year contract when you purchased a 4S.

The carriers are not going to subsidize hundreds of dollars for a new phone for someone less than 12 months in to a new contract. Even if the next iPhone is release in the fall, your not getting an early upgrade.

iPhone 4S users will be eligible for a subsidized upgrade when the iPhone 5S is release. Ask how many 3GS owners got an upgrade early for the 4. Not many.

Everyone in this thread talking crap about not wanting a bigger screen, will still buy the iPhone 5 regardless!

Once the screen goes bigger, they are going to go back down again. You will love the 4in screen!

Summer is way too soon. I mean people are still probably trying to get their hands on the iPad 3, so Apple shouldn't put that fire out with a new iPhone announcement.

But it wouldn't be surprising is Apple is gonna mass produce the new iPhone a couple months ahead. I do think that the new iPhone's hardware and design is completed (as SJ's last main task) and once the 4S slows down around June, they can start ramping up on the new iPhone production.
