so you got the highest education you can, and you're still not (i assume) making $50 million + per year. why is that? is it because you are lazy and you don't want to work hard enough to get ahead? why don't you go out there and get that for yourself and your family? all it takes is hard work.

I don't want to be an executive. I want to be a University Professor and that's exactly what I am. I actually make less than I did when I was at Intel, but I'm infinitely happier. But if I did want to be a CEO, I wouldn't be working at an Apple store, I would be getting the right kind of experiences to prepare me to be one. They just didn't fall into that, they planned and managed a career to get there.

And the reason that CEO make what they do, is that they create value for the owners of the company. The stockholders come to them and say "I will give you a dime for every dollar that you make for me." And when a company does as well as Apple has nobody complains.

Why don't you ask all the millionaires and billionaires that have gotten rich off Tim Cook if they would like to remove his incentive to grow the company? If these people weren't worth it to the people who are paying them, they wouldn't pay them. How can this be so hard to understand?

really... ? they just slapped a logo on it and people are wanting this. this is like taking a $10 32gb USB key, and putting a Apple logo on it and suddenly its worth $100 and desirable. come on now...

I've never really understood the point of logos on anything. I don't want to feel like a walking advertisement. I can do that when using the device.

Chrismas Gift from Apple

Waaaau what a shame. What a joke. I will feel like spit in my face if a received 10 $ backpack from my Boss. Its better o dont get nothing.

Most big firms, like Apple, offer a year end bonus based on sales, performance, and meeting objectives.

I'm sure the bag is extra

not in apple retail. the managers get bonuses. retail just gets more hours and almost no days off during the holidays.

So basically Apple retail is like any other retail during the holidays.

during the rest of the year too. same stuff, retail is retail.

this bag actually seems like a bad idea. now people will know you probably have something apple related inside it to steal and target you easier.

So, if you don't have the horsepower what should we do? Life isn't fair. LeBron James gets millions because he hit the basketball genetic lottery. Obviously he also works really, really hard, but if you can't do something that's sad for you. There are plenty of guys who worked as hard and aren't playing in the NBA. And so, they aren't making millions.

If it's basketball, being really good at playing basketball isn't enough. If he lived in the UK, then he wouldn't make any money no matter how good he is at basketball. Perhaps he could work as the sideshow in a circus, but nobody in this country is interested in basketball, so there's no money.

You are trying very hard here to find a fault. You think the Apple employees would be safer with a Samsung logo?

Out of curiosity, do your footballers or cricketeers (sorry I don't know the right word) make ridiculous amounts of money?

I think it's quite a nice gesture. The card is also nice and looks like some thought went into it (yeah, I know everybody got the same card, but still).

I would like to receive something like that from where I work, and not the usual "Oh it's new-year again. Have a good year k thnx" card (no gift! :p).

Yes.

no more people are complaining about the fact that bonuses like what I get used to be the norm not the exceptions. If the company had a great year you got a cut of the pie as well.
I would hate to work for any company that treated it's workforce in such a cheesy way.

Mind you the other side of the coin is that here in the UK the BBC are doing an Exposé on how Apple treats it's manufacturing workforce in the Far East this coming Thursday. From the clips I've seen it makes for uncomfortable viewing.
The problem is that a small gift can often be worse than no gift.
It becomes an insult.

If you work hard all year, make the company lots of money, and yes, you do get your salary for doing you work of course.
Then the boss comes round, says happy christmas, thanks for all the effort, have a cookie or a mince pie, then that can be seen as an insult as that's all he thinks you are worth, one mince pie.

It would be better just giving a card with a thank you, than to give an insulting gift.

Wow. Just wow. A backpack priced at $60 retail, with the company logo on it. I think I'd quit on the spot if that was my christmas bonus.
This has nothing to do with performance or bonuses or anything like that. It's just a company wide holiday gift that many tech companies do in the Silicon Valley. It's usually some sort of company swag type of thing. It's nothing more or less than that as is generally the expectations from those who actually work at these companies and know what the Silicon Valley environment is like when it comes to these things.

I was going to apply to Apple Retail because I was looking for another job but I was wondering if it's worth it. Is working at Applw fun, boring, tough, annoying, etc. What are people's thoughts about working at Apple Retail?

Yes. I know from experience. when I worked at an apple retail store I knew employees who would get followed, had cars broken into because they would leave with their work shirt on. Or walk into work wearing it. It's more of a target than most other brands

I was given the "gift of time" this year, 4 free hours off over the holidays, which is valued at near $300 to me, I could buy 4 bags and sew Apple badges on them with my time off.

Hopefully the Apple bonuses are a lot more thankful than this "gift", which I am sure is what most employees are looking forward to and will appreciate. Unless Apple cheaps out on them too.

This $60 gift is equivalent to about 4 hours off, with the hourly rate these Apple Store employees are being paid. So, it's about the same as your 'gift of time'.

The real Apple employees in Cupertino will be getting large bonuses (plus, they get company stock which will make many of them millionaires)

Better package than gift

It seems like the back back with the Apple logo would have been a more appropriate gift if a iPnone, iPod, gift certificate, an award of an extra day off, etc would have been packed inside.

If you want to motivate employees, you don't do it with a lame piece of junk.

Hmm, maybe my brother will look into a retail job at Apple. He's a fan of Apple stuff even more than I am.

Crappy holiday gift. Multi-billion dollar company that we are talking about here.

The long-term value of the company doesn't need to affect the quality, perks, or pay of the jobs in any way.

Well at least they are consistent with the types of gifts. Although I have 3 apple hoodies a fleece blanket an aluminum water bottle lol

that is so lame! company of this magnitude gives this junk - that they buy at $10 at most a piece in mass quantity. how about free iPhone/ipod touch or at least $300 gift certificate?

that rivals this article:

I hate ignorant posts like this. Companies do not publicly disclose year end $ bonuses (where not legally required) for obvious reasons (well maybe not obvious to some of the folks here). The kitsch is just a "fun" extra bonus for many. And, of course, not every employee is worth any bonus so they are lucky to get a backpack they can shill on eBay for a $100 if they are not eligible for a $ bonus. So please, enough whining about how stingy Apple is.

Comments like yours are just sad.
You miss the whole point of Christmas and giving gifts.
Ever heard the proverb, "it's the thought that counts" ?

It's sad that anything and everything is controversial nowadays, even gift-giving.
Apple is saying thank you in the message to their employees and accompanying the message with a gift that they can use or sell for $100 on ebay.

Entitled people like you snubbing their nose at thank you messages, deserve neither a thank you nor a gift.

Considering that they made 94 MILLION DOLLARS of net profit per day in the last quarter I have to agree :)

Maybe buy Beats for $3 billion instead of 3.5 and spread the love to people that work hard every day to earn you those profits.....

Those people get paid to do a job that would be essentially the same at any other company. If someone wants to make money off of a company's success (or lose it), he can buy stocks. Otherwise, people would be killing each other to get retail jobs at Apple instead of RadioShack.

It's also controversial if you refer to it as a Christmas gift instead of a "holiday" or "winter" gift. EDIT: I'm rolling my eyes at political correctness, not you.
