Apple Music subscriptions for the employees cost the company NOTHING but server access cycles. The company looses nothing when additional individuals access the digital files (but a fraction or two electrical usage). Remember its all virtual. Having the retail employees being able to experience the Apple Music service will help them talk about the service to customers and help the employees understand issues when customers approach them with questions.

Its a total win for Apple executives since they will play with accounting practices and will write this non-cost as a business cost at full retail. The executives that came up with this accounting trick will then get a big fat bonus.

In the mid 1990s I worked for MicroAge in their head quarters (before it went Chapter 11). We all got Dec 25th off (like most Americans). When we came into the offices the following day we each found an identical box on our desks with printing saying happy holiday. When we opened the boxes we saw a hard cover coffee table style book with wonderful color photos on nearly every page. It was a history of the company. Like most hard-cover books it had a professionally designed dust jacket, and as on most dust jackets was a price ($50). Naturally, these books did not cost the company $50 dollars retail. With over 5,000 employees, it likely cost the company less then $10 each to print these books. When I left the company, i did what all my coworkers did, and left the book on the shelf in my cubical for the next underpaid employee. Books like these are called vanity books.

I worked at an Apple retail store back when .Mac was a paid subscription service and all employees got it for free. I can't believe they don't do the same thing for Apple Music. I realize the margins are lower on Apple Music than they were on .Mac but still. Talk about being cheap.

The Apple executives wanted all the retail employees to use the .Mac service so that you could customer questions about the service and increase sales. It cost Apple minimal dollars for the use of the server space.

Nice sentiment. Shame the service is so terrible. But I know Apple means well.

Well, for my current music library, half of songs are just NOT available in Apple Music.
Plus, I am not living a country where "unlimited" data is so popular.
No, I do not need Apple Music. But hey, if someone could give me a full year sub for free, I think I can try it out. At least, play with Apple's poor anime music library.

I'd say that if the majority of your library is anime music then you're already in an extreme minority of users.

So, I understand that Eddie is in charge of Apple Musak. So was it Angela's idea for the Beats headphones gift? We sure haven't heard much of her lately and I don't really see much change in the stores.
So, will they extend the subscription for next years gift? /s

It is not free to Apple, they will pay the artists/record companies. Please don't get Taylor Swift riled up again!

Apple last week provided all of its employees with urBeats earphones from the Beats by Dr. Dre product lineup as part of an annual holiday gift, and today iTunes chief Eddy Cue told Apple employees they would also receive a free nine-month subscription to Apple Music.

Cue shared the news in a video message that went out to employees this morning. Employees will receive an Apple Music promo code later this month, which will allow them to activate their free subscriptions.

Valued at $90, the Apple Music subscription paired with the urBeats headphones makes Apple's 2015 gift to its employees one of the most generous the company has offered in recent years. Apple's holiday gifts go out to all of its employees around the world, encompassing Cupertino, satellite offices, and each of its retail locations.

In addition to being a nice perk for employees, offering an Apple Music subscription to all of its employees will have benefits for Apple, as it will allow retail workers to familiarize themselves with the service so they can better explain and recommend it to customers.

It would be awesome if Apple would actually give these gifts to their employees that are supporting it. Not just retail store employees.

Seems like the first sentence of the article talks about the gifts their employees received.

My previous in ear headphones were UrBeats, Im never EVER going to buy those again!
They feel really plastic, the sound quality sounds really cheap (and Im not even an audiophile) and things started breaking one by one from early on (starting with the remote control buttons)

UrBeats as a xmas present when you are an employee for the worlds most valuable company. Wow, thats seriously cheap. I wouldnt know if I would have taken that as anything else than an insult - its definately one of Apples worst products.

The service in itself sounds good on paper, it's just too bad it resides in such a terribly designed and laid-out app.

It's better than nothing.

‘Gifts’ is not a verb. Was there any good reason that they couldn’t have used ‘gives’?
