If they can't put it in the display I'm all for it on the back like the pixel and likely the S8. But put it in the top corner opposite the camera. That is a more natural spot to reach than the middle.

Any corner is a terrible place if the sensor is a fixed location. It ignores either left or right handed people depending on which corner the sensor it placed. Now if the sensor exists along the entire edge and the user can specify location in s/w settings that would be OK.

Top is a terrible place because small handed people exist and the top is not the easiest place for them to comfortably reach one-handed. The bottom is more natural because that is where people grip the phone.

Wouldn't the bottom right order of the screen be most natural for most people?

Presumably, if its software, you can choose where to have it?

I started my comment with 'if they can't put it in the display'...

Plus I went off just holding my phone in my hand. My finger is naturally in the stop left on the back of the phone.

I don't think anything about the fingerprint censor being on the back is convenient or natural. There are literally thousands of times I have unlocked my phone using touch ID while it is sitting on my desk or a table, something not possible with the censor on the back. The front is the way to go, in my opinion.

I agree front is better.

This would suck. you would have to reach to high to get to touch ID. The below image shows where it gets tricky to reach in terms of just the screen. The problem increases with the size of the device. So even if this is device is the same as the 6, having touch ID higher than the actual screen would make the stretch far too great for the majority of users.

This is based on the front of the display. Your hand is in a completely different position in relation to the back of your phone.

Anybody who enables Assistive Touch (Settings>General>Accessibility>AssitiveTouch>ON) gets to see how this will most likely be implemented.
Touch the screen or lift phone to wake up screen, button shows up where you put it last (Preferred location) touch and then it disappears and opens home screen (unlike the assistive touch button, which currently stays)

I hadn't thought of left and right handedness. Good point.

No, no no, no and NO!

One of the main huge reasons I didn't switch back to Android last year is all the great wallet cases available for iPhone are not for the best Android phones because of that stupid sensor on the back requiring holes in any case. NO.

Misread your initial post, thought you wanted it on the front. However, is this positioning on the back great for left handed people?

It seems apple is moving up the release dates. I hope the " regular" 7s and 7s+ will get more upgrades than just a new color and newer soc and cams. Perhaps a small design upgrade, with glass backs and alu sides and better ips/lcd displays? Higher res? Perhaps replacing the 5.5 inch display of the 7+ wirh a 5.7 inch , with smaller bezels and chins? Just like they are doing with the ipad pro 9.7 inch in a fee months. I would definitely go for that one, and wait if the iphone 8 is up to the challenge.
But the iphone 8? Seems you won' t be able to get one until january 2018 , a few could be available in november , but demand will surely be very high and not enough supply.

I can' t help thinking there are a lot of mix ups in all these rumours and we have been put on the wrong foot. Something isn' t right...
I think a new se has put rumors off.
Will there be se models based on the 7 and 7+ designs? And will there be a 8+ besides the rumored 8?

So 2 se models and 2 new models?

I am really reaching here , i know, but somerhing is off about alle these rumors.

i can see apple introducing an entire se line that is in essence in the same price range as high end from other brands and an ultra high end line, that have the highest prices around, same as the huawei porsche design or the xioami mimix. Only apple will sell millions instead of a few thousand.

The best way to create demand for the ultra high end is introducing a " value" line , that has distinct features and is very recognizable and is known in the public as the iphone for the " poor or less fortunate" . The ultra high end will be the ultimate status symbol for iphone users.

Or something like that. Don' t know yet.

Sounds interesting for sure, I think I'm going to be looking at the LG G6 and the iPhone 8 next.
Not sure about the S8 as I like the look of the G6 more and I have found Samsung cameras to over sample a bit too much for my tastes.

But I'm hopeful Apple keep Touch ID as I have found finger print sensors to be incredibly useful.

Which top corner eh? Right or Left?
There are a lot of us Lefties out there who would baulk at it being on the wrong side for us. The middle is perfect.

There's a "new report" out almost every other day now, and it's only March... I think everyone should just admit that we know nothing until something concrete (i.e. part leaks) start coming out.

I really wish MacRumors had split notifications for iOS blog, Mac stuff etc.

I find the iPhone rumours tediously dull. I'd enjoy the iPhone reveal a lot more not knowing what was going to be in it, but ever year we've basically seen every single part of it leak first - no wonder it's not a surprise.

But hey, it's a rumours site, that's cool, I know people like this sort of stuff - I just wish the brilliant notifications could be split up so I can see when new Mac hardware is due, macOS updates launch and all that jazz without every iPhone part and rumour too.

(P.S. I also find all the iPhone rumours painfully obvious anyway. If Touch ID is removed with an in-screen solution then obviously a software animation will direct you to where you press your finger when touch ID input is required. The lightning to USB-C cable is now a no brainer too.)

So many good points. I stopped watching movie trailers for this exact reason - they release multiple trailers and show everything you need to know! I watch the teaser/debut trailer and that's it. Maybe I should adopt the same approach to the iPhone rumors since I watch the keynotes like movies anyway...

It seems very strange that the 8 would be available later than the 7s and 7s Plus, I think DigiTimes have got it wrong. Initial reports have stated that the iPhone 8 will start production earlier because it gives Apple time to make more and iron out any issues, that makes a lot more sense. Plus DigiTimes is one of the less reliable ones to report. I guess we will see in September tho.

On another note I like what I'm reading about the iPhone 8 (or whatever they call it) putting the fingerprint reader in the screen would be great. Seems like the iPhone 8 will be the one to get.

It should be interesting to see how the rugged case designs on the market (Defender, Commuter, etc) will have to change to accommodate any of the variations discussed here.

Personally, as long as I can turn all this biometric stuff off and use a PIN, I don't care. I'll get the phone and stuff it into a Defender like usual. If the iPhone 8 requires me to use that I'm going to upgrade from my 6S to a 7S when those are about to be discontinued. Oh wait - I'd be forced to use iOS10 then.... never mind.

Right but as you describe above it would depend on the sensor being in multiple locations. We don't really know anything about the sensor at this point. In my post I described w/ and w/o sensor location flexibility.

iphone 7 and 7s to justeify the primium price of the REAL new phone, not that 4 YEARS iphone design with the 720p display!

Just because it looks similar to the 6, doesn't mean it is the 6. That's like calling the latest 9.7" iPad an "iPad 2 with smaller bezels".

However, I agree that Apple have waited so long to improve the screen to body ratio, it would be a shame if they release an iPhone 7S.

I understand the iPhone 8 wasn't ready for 2016, but they've had an additional year. Make the iPhone 8 expensive. Start making it early. Keep on selling the iPhone 7 for those who are more price conscious. But what is the point of the iPhone 7S?

Agreed. Moving the sensor to the back is compromise. Having a sensor in the display is the best of both worlds, and seems like typical Apple.

just like the macbook pro without the touch bar that is for the peaple who "NEED" a macbook air, a trick to make tou belive that the macbook pro start at 1299, while the REAL one with the toch bar start AT 1499!
insted of selling the touch bar from 1299 like thay should be from the start,

lets procced,
32 to 128 gb on all devices, 150$ to 450$!!! watch bands,
seperated ipad cover that cost more than 100$ both, and cancel the 69 leather ones,
apple pencil 100$ and magic trackped 129$ up from 79$,
and icloud, from 200gb to 1tb, what ABOUT 500gb option?!

there is NOTHING in the middle anymore with that company, trying to sqeeze every single pany from you by manipulaiting you to upgrade every single time on everything!!!

steve jobs was so SIMPLE... ipad - 499,599,699 ---- 16,32,64
iphone - 199,299,399---16,32,64
and so on on everything

in this days, apple makes a polish black iphone and sells it ONLY in 128, why?! why not give all the optins to every costumer??? why trying to sqeeze the penny from each and every one of your costumers while you have 250 billion in cash?? where is the --- "lets try to answer every need of ALL of our costumers and lower the product price as much as we can without affecting the quality, and i dont care how you will do it" approach?? NOW, it all about the money with them!
The market is becoming saturated with participants so Apple is giving over that practice of offering more generous specs and features at attractive pricing structures to lower tier sellers. If you look at the offerings of OnePlus and Huawei and others, they are throwing in some really nice features and specs and in some cases, even free accessories, to win over customers. Meanwhile Apple, Samsung and now Google are putting the squeeze on our wallets for the "good stuff".

Look, I don't like the direction Apple is going in, either, and I do think their strategy could hurt them in the long run, unless they innovate like crazy and create features that will make customers practically beg to throw money at them. They have not been doing that very well for a long time now, but now that they're closed to completing their new campus and settling into all the investments and acquisitions they've made in the past few years, maybe that pipeline Tim keeps referring to will actually start yielding some solid results.

It will be interesting to see if they do anything for the market they are currently serving with the SE.

Have you seen where they put the sensor in the new Samsung S8? People are going to be trying to unlock their phones and will smudge their cameras instead, at least until they get used to it. That was not an ergonomic decision but apparently came about because they stuffed the phone in such a way that was the only spot left...if the word of their competitor LG can be taken for truth.

I'm left handed but at times use phones and computer mice right handed, so any option that favors one side over the other with no option to switch is not attractive to me.

So you frequent a rumors site and then don't like seeing rumors? Seams reasonable.

IPhone released pushed back tbh
I won't be surprised if that would to happen being that this is the "S" variant year but then look how they released the iPhone 7 " iPhone 6 version 3" if there is no 8 this year then Apple will be in trouble.
