I wondered under a separate thread how Apple was going to ship iOS 12 when it was so far behind on iOS 11, HomePod, et al.

This is great news. The hope is Apple makes the hard internal changes required to start shipping amazing software again. The problem isn’t just that things are late, or that things are buggy, but rather, outside of deep hardware/software integration, Apple software is too often sub-par. Not putting a create folder button is Files app? Who designed this? Who tested it? Honestly, the list of obvious bugs and missing essential features is mind blowing.

I know software is hard. But Apple has the resources to do it right. Something is rotten in Denmark, and my hope is Tim makes the hard calls to fix things.

I'm fine with iOS 12 focusing on performance and stability as long as they introduce a dark mode and make Siri better.

Umm, it’s there. Granted, you’ll often have to scroll a bit first to reveal it.

Don’t worry I think age is not the issue. I’m 24 and can’t care less about emojis, animojis and other kinds of mojis. Honestly, those can excite only small minded people. It’s definitely not pushing the human race forward. I miss the “Think different” campaign.
I don't get why people are always talking about emojis like they would bind any kind of greater resources at Apple that could be spend on bugfixes or whatever features you might care about?

I don't think anyone would seriously think it is the case, it is more a sarcastic way to make fun of Apple's obsession with emojis/animojis (which personally I think they deserve, it gets a bit ridiculous at times such as during the iPhone X keynote).

And having said that, they did commit some resources to develop animojis which in my view is not exactly a killer app for their face recognition technology. For their second use of the technology with Face ID (which indeed makes good use of it), they could have found something better to keep their devs busy.

About time. iOS 11 is buggy as hell, apps never close even when you kill them from the app switcher, hard freezes, and just general jank I’d expect of an Android product. Not something from Apple

Why is everyone saying this is great news? People should be pissed! This is absurd! Apple is a multi billion dollar company, how in gods name do they not have the resources to work on both features and performance and stability. So iOS 12 is going to be just as boring as 11, 10, 9, 8, 7.

This is not good news, this is terrible news!

What a joke, honestly.

Problem for Apple is that far too many users expect a new iOS on a yearly basis and expect "features" no matter how silly (animjois) or gimmicky they are.
I remember something about the law of "diminishing returns" from a business course taken a long time ago. The example used was tailored to the typical undergraduate collage student: you could only drink so many drinks before the feel-good feeling started to wear off. For iOS, a few good new features are born after longer intervals than the many frivolous ones that come too often.

iPhone 7+ - Software issues
iPP 12 G2 - Software issues
rMB 2015 - Software issues

iOS 11 has been bad enough I switched my phone to Android (Razer)
I like my IPP 12 G2 and would prefer not to have to switch to something else.
I like my rMB but the issues are disheartening.

I would like Apple to take the time to make sure the next release (iOS 12) works like advertised.
I would like Apple to take the time to make sure the following release (iOS 13) works smoothly.

I am really tired of finally getting a fairly decent update only to have the next upgrade roll out in a couple of months and start the bug swatting all over again..

I keep seeing how Apple is a multi billion or trillion dollar company, and this is supposed to fix whatever problem is being discussed in that thread. Money is necessary for a business to run, but in and of itself it can’t solve technical problems. If the problem is beyond the current technology by enough of a gap then throwing money at it is a good way to turn a trillion dollar company into a million dollar one. Spending money without intelligent planning is a good way to accomplish nothing expensively.

When trying to solve a problem and money isn’t an issue and the problem remains then money isn’t the answer.

Ina is usually well-sourced. I believe it, and if proven true I'm glad Apple has made this decision. Software is really lacking at the moment.

lol that was when she/he worked with Engadget or even with Walt Mossberg at a technology site. Now looking at their webpage where he/she works now this article is the ONLY tech focused in more than a week!

I don't take too much from her "report" as being well sourced. And somebody please SMACK that blog/forum reading hack of a "tech genius" at Bloomberg who really shouldn't have his job! Every comment and piece hes featured in we've read it here on Macrumors or AndroidCentral.

IMHO, problem is far too many users expect Animoji as a feature of iOS. I said it at the launch of iPhone X and I'll state it here again: too much focus for a fun, comedy based feature (the ads show the amount of time focused on this) vs cleaning up existing features and bugs. Too many people are playing silly games (Animoji) vs using their iPhone to even notice bugs anywhere.

You can rename a file, you have to long press a file, then tap "Rename." Maybe it's not as easy and quick as on the Mac, but the ability exists.

I demoed an iPhone X and I didn't find a way to rename files. In the camera, after taking a picture, I didn't find a way to rename the picture file.

Are you referring to the actual Photos app or the Files app? I'm referring to the Files app, but in the Photos app, no, there is no way to rename a file there.

This may be all well and good for taking priority over other..

(I guess everyone needs to take a break every now and then.)

Ina is one of the people invited to the Mac Pro roundtable this year, so her sources are pretty good.

I am torn. On one hand, even on the latest iOS11 I still have rotation issues. I haven't had smart keyboard issues since 11.2.5, but I could be so used to them at this point I just ignore them. iOS 11 is clearly a buggy release.

However, Apple showed a lot of promise for iPads with iOS11 and I'd hate to lose a year on the momentum.

Being invited to a round table about the Mac Pro is very different than iOS as an OS. Apple as we all know are very tightlipped about their efforts until official announcement because well it affects the bottom line and stocks within the current quarter.

Yes Ina gets connections and may still do ... I just find it hard to believe no new features will be released especially with Android almost killing Apple as an mobile OS in the regions Apple is desperately seeking out - mostly from Samsung. It's very obvious what we find as a value with iOS here in N.America is NOT the same sentiment felt in the UK, India, most of Europe as a leading platform. End users are getting a LOT smarter or more comfortable with augmenting their smartphones to do more. They always want more features.

it's very possible Ina incorrectly paraphrased "We have exciting new features in the pipeline for iOS and the iPhone yet we're focusing on making the current iOS more stable, reliable for the next exciting features to bring the best value to our customers". Thus ... Apple is focusing on stability and no more new features until next year.

See what I'm saying? ;)
