Imagine if they had the same release cycle as mid 2000's Mac OS? 11.3, 11.4, 11.5, etc. over an 18month or 2 year period; the polish would be incredible... I'd say that half of the releases the last few years don't warrant a full update. Get back to your core Apple and put the fit and finish back in the game.

Why is it one or the other? Is today’s Apple incapable of providing BOTH “New Features” and “Performance/Quality”?

Don’t forget that also the schedule is pretty much locked for the yearly release. Features, quality, on time. Pick any two.

I personally wouldn't mind a major polishing of existing features, bug fixes, performance & battery improvements and tweaks to the inconsistencies of iOS before they introduce major new features & redesigns.

My brother still uses his 4s and he has no plans to upgrade. I’m not sure what IOS version he is on but I would be surprised if it wasn’t anything newer than whatever version was released 5 or 6 years ago. He needed a phone that could handle POS credit card transactions and whatever hardware/software he uses still works. That and a phone that he can call people (NOT text) is all he cares about.

No new emojis? My god, how will we survive?

Ah don’t worry this is a top priority item for Apple. I am sure they recognise the crucial importance of having different shapes and colour variants of interactive poo emojis and definitely won’t delay this just for the sake trivial things such has stability improvements.

Sounds like they're gonna support the 5 in iOS 12! Great work Apple.

I don’t think (or at least hope so) you’re being serious with that wish, but doing that would go completely against the goal of better performance and reliability. Re-introducing 32-bit support and testing also the 32-bit branch for one single (and relatively ancient) phone would just take away resources from something more forward-looking.

So if this is actually true, then great. But I feel like High Sierra was intended to be the Snow Leopard type release already, and that has gone over sooo well.

Also, I wish they wouldn't delay homescreen changes. We need a Siri watch face kind of home screen for the iPhone.

Apple has changed its iOS software plans, and will now delay some new features until next year to focus on addressing performance and quality issues, according to Ina Fried, chief technology correspondent at Axios.

The report claims Apple's software engineering chief Craig Federighi announced the revised plans to employees at a meeting earlier this month.

Fried says a number of features have been delayed until 2019, including a planned refresh of the iPhone home screen and CarPlay interface, improvements to core apps like Mail, and updates to capturing, editing, and sharing photos.

The delay should allow Apple to focus on stability and bug fixes in iOS 12, which will likely still include improvements in a number of areas, including the Health app, ARKit, and parental controls, according to the report.

In addition, Apple is said to be prioritizing work to make iPhones "more responsive" and "less prone to cause customer support issues."

Not gonna lie I'm very disappointed with this, basically they just said your brand new iPhone X's aren't getting any new features for a year and a half. ****.

No iPhone split screen multi-tasking at iOS 12 fall release, I’ll leave iOS for Android.

Ok, I’ve been sort of defending Apple and needing to fix bugs rather than introduce new features, but emojis in general and Animoji’s in particular I never got why Apple was so fixated upon highlighting them. I usually don’t pick on some ‘feature’ like this but I honestly have not understood Apple’s excitement when releasing a new batch. Are there customers clamoring for these? I realize I’m older and it’s a feature not aimed at me but is this something that people make decisions for which phone to buy?

Bug fixes are seriously needed. The frequency with which I have functional and visual bugs on iOS 11 is embarrassing for a perfectionist company. I would understand some bugs on older or cheaper devices, but if I pay >$1,000 for new devices I expect perfection.

Still hope for and expect some UI updates especially for iPhone X, iOS 11 isn't really adapted to the new screen format, doesn't make much out of it and shows too much blank spaces.

That Axios article doesn't mention any sources for that story. This appears to be just another unsubstantiated rumor... And we have seen PLENTY of baseless Apple-related rumors that ultimately turn out to be false.

In other words, don't get your knickers in a bunch over it. ;)

Ina is usually well-sourced. I believe it, and if proven true I'm glad Apple has made this decision. Software is really lacking at the moment.

If they can make it the Snow Leopard version of iOS I think most will be happy. I love iOS 11 on my iPad, but it sometimes lags and has some random glitches that ruin the experience.

Whether you like so-called skeuomorphic or so-called flat design is subjective. None of the issues I have with my iOS devices have anything to do with the look of the UI.

What changed design wise between iOS 10 and 11?
More big titles in navigation bars. That’s about it.

The 5s, you mean. iOS 12 won't bring legacy 32bit support back...

Worry not, you'll still get your new emojis in iOS 12 with that alleged shift of focus.

Once the Unicode consortium comes around with a new set of emojis, Apple is sure to be among the first incorporating it. That's not like some major new feature.

The article says some new features have been delayed to iOS 12, but the date quoted (2019) would suggest iOS 13. Anyway since we didn’t know about these planned features it’s not like we’ll miss them.
No, it’s saying some planned iOS 12 features have been delayed until next year, which one can assume will be iOS 13.

I'm having trouble thinking a company big as apple have such small resources they have to focus on one or the other.

So you mean Apple has finally realised that their proverbial s**t DOES indeed stink like everyone else's, and they're going to fix the slop nightmare iOS has become?

Wow... it only took them years to figure that out.

Fix the nightmare iOS has evolved into and perhaps I'll come back from the Pixel.

EDIT: I too also agree Forstall needs to return. Skeuomorphism wasn't everyone's cuppa tea, but at least the damn software performed well.

I agree. I really wish they’d do the same with OSX. I few there’s no need for yearly update. Anyone remember Snow Leopard?! Desktop should be rock solid. There’s way too many bells and whistles being added at the expense of stability.

A two year cycle would be much better than a 1 year cycle. It seems that as soon as the software is approaching the point where it woks as intended, the next version is out.

People mention Snow Leopard, which was great, but I look back to Panther, Tiger, Leopard where there was at least 2 years between them and they were better for it,
