I bought the original SE because I hated the 6 design and was going to hold onto my 5s until it died. The surprise announcement of the 6s chipset in the superior design and smaller form factor sold me on it.
So true also for me! It was a great surprise when the SE was announced, can't remember any rumors before....
it was small with the good 6s camera (and no camera bump!), fast and beautiful. Still using it!!!

I would still buy a new SE with with new internals, better camera and the original SE design again in a heartbeat!

I am planning to update to a 12/13 mini - but I am in no hurry....maybe next 1 or 2 years, or a good second hand possibility pops up. Or the 12/13 mini gets at some point the next SE, but I expect not very soon - as SE 2025 maybe.

But the ultimate perfect thinkable iphone for me would still be the 4/4s size/design with a bezel-less 4 inch screen....

Take the XR body, give it an OLED display, use the A17, same main camera as the iPhone 14 (non-Pro) and release it in early 2024 at $449-479.

If the “cheapest” iPhone goes that high, I don’t even want to imagine the price hikes for the Pro/Ultra models. The iPad 10 appears to be leading the way for a higher price “basement” and it’s not a good trend.
Just like the $329 iPad, they likely would keep the 3rd gen iPhone SE around and drop the price to $299 and lower even more with trade ins which could bring it down $229. The iPhone SE 4th gen would just be a new tier. But they are gonna justify the expense: comes with A17, uses faster 5G, OLED and Face ID and you will be guaranteed years of iOS updates.

Big phone-lovers have the world. Myriads upon myriads of options. And now they get yet another option, while the one somewhat small option that small phone-lovers have left (phone that is still being updated) is being taken away.
Throw small phone-lovers a bone, Apple. Maybe make an SE and SE Plus if you really want to sell a big SE.

And let’s keep at least one Touch ID phone. It’s better than Face ID for some situations and for some people.
Apple gave small phone lovers a couple options in the iPhone 12 & 13 mini. Apparently sales weren’t great. If you like small phones I’d suggest buying a 13 mini now, perhaps it will eventually be updated eventually as a new SE.

Not for how it’s priced
I've got a OnePlus 8T with 256 GB of storage and 12 GB of RAM that I got for US$399. It's 2 steps behind the current 10T, and has a Snapdragon 865. It's huge and it's heavy. I bought it because the Android tablet I had was underpowered. The 2022 iPhone SE starts at US$429 and is much more powerful and, for the 8T having OLED technology, it's really not that different most days.

The big battery helps but the older 5G modem sucks energy.

It is all speculation and we will not know for sure anything for at least another year or more when Apple finally releases the actual NEW iPhone SE to the market. I get it that someone will say apple is doing this or that but they have working on the next iPhone SE probably since the mid point of last year before the current generation of iPhone SE was to market. Normal time is 2-3 years for Apple put a new product on the stage with Timmy.

Why must we suffer under these analysts and their mindless rumors. 😩

Ask yourself -Has Apple done anything with SE despite bumping a few specs on an old model and giving it the latest SoC? No, never ever!

SE4 is just going to be an XR with the same SoC as the mid-tier or Pro, depending on when SE4 drops.

Stop all this nonsense.

2c. just don't bother.

rename the 13 mini the SE, drop the extra production line for the existing SE to get better economy of scale and therefore reduced manufacturing cost per unit, and carry on with making products for solutions that don't already exist.

don't turn into Samsung with 15 different options to solve 3 problems.

People buy the SE because they don't want a big phone they also do not need all the bells and whistles....but they do want a longer battery life.

Apple will probably have to use OLED because their phones will look outdated if their competitors offer longer battery life by using OLED.

SE4 in 2024 will be XR with A15 or A16. SE4 dropping in 2025 will be XR with A16 or A17.

SE getting more than single camera and better than LCD can only happen once $799 iPhones graduate from dual-camera setup to triple-camera setup, and get something superior to current mid-tier iPhone OLEDs.
Obviously, none of us outside of Apple know. It's possible the Mini could be the next SE.

If Apple contracted with parts manufacturers to produce a significant quantity of components (as leverage for low per-unit pricing) and the Mini didn't sell enough to use up the contracted supply, then producing a Mini-based SE 4 is one way to get those components into sold units.

As good as contract agreements can be written to favor one side or the other, unforeseen circumstances can create conditions where a company like Apple may be put in a position like that.
No, it's not possible that SE will be a mini and we do actually know exactly what Apple will do and has always done for iPhones SE:

Last generation's mid-tier + conservative spec bump + latest SoC = iPhone SE (all generations)

Apple's sales strategy cannot have you settle for a $429 SE and not clearly, unmistakably understand that your iPhone is inferior to the current $799 and $999 iPhones.

People buy the SE because they don't want a big phone they also do not need all the bells and whistles....
..and Apple sells the SE because it's the cheapest iPhone to make while putting in just enough value/$ that budget-conscious consumers will still get it.

SE is not about size or creating something new, in a different form-factor, for those who don't want Face-ID, don't want a big phone, don't want OLED, don't want any other new, more expensive spec:

SE is about creating a extremely high profit margin iPhone by combining an old model with the latest and greatest SoC and selling it at a price-point that most consumers can accept, in the $300-500 range.

iPhone SE is, due to its low price and many years of security updates, also a big hit with institutions, like hospitals, schools and other workplaces that need employees to carry around work phones.

You're right, but I think that people are starting to get annoyed with Apple's recycling.

The 2022 SE was a critical failure and if reports are to be believed, a commercial failure too.
Big statements with nothing to back them up.

It’s just a general feel.

Virtually no journalist reviewing the 22 SE said ‘wow what a bargain in a still good few years old form factor’.

Instead it was ‘2014 in 2022 when you can get get great modern looking android phones for the same price or less : c’mon really?’

And tech journalists are showered with the latest and greatest - yep they are not too impressed by the SE 2022 but on balance it's not a product for those chasing the bleeding edge and I think it's been reported fairly.

I find it odd that with so many Android phones using OLED or AMOLED that PWM isn't an issue for any of their users. So whats Apple messing about with?
Some people can’t use those phones either. But one thing Apple does with LCD displays that irritates my nervous system is temporal dithering. I don’t think iPhone 8 Plus and earlier had that. I forget what precisely it is or does but it’s used to enhance colors, I think. I never had any problems with the iPhone 8 Plus and older displays but temporal dithering is a different form of supposedly imperceptible motion of the display that causes me to experience a white shimmer effect at the periphery of my left eye’s vision. I’m not sure why it’s just that eye but it’s a nervous system thing. My opthamologist found no problems.

Still, this isn’t a painful thing. Dealing with OLED pwm is painful and debilitating.

Considering the iPhone SE 4 will surely be a 550$ phone, they could spring for an oled...
Maybe the exact same as the iPhone XS
