Jury's still out on whether it'll be a 2024 or 2023 launch. But yeah, if it launches in 2024 then it'd be based on the base-model 15. And based on current trends, will be running the A16 anyway.

Obviously, none of us outside of Apple know. It's possible the Mini could be the next SE.
If Apple contracted with parts manufacturers to produce a significant quantity of components (as leverage for low per-unit pricing) and the Mini didn't sell enough to use up the contracted supply, then producing a Mini-based SE 4 is one way to get those components into sold units.
As good as contract agreements can be written to favor one side or the other, unforeseen circumstances can create conditions where a company like Apple may be put in a position like that.
I think 2024 might be a new form factor with different sizes and the next SE will take on the current form factor 6.1. The mini is gone it failed to live up to Apples expectations, so give it a rest already. The size and battery life is not what people want in real life outside of MacRumors.
Mini-based SE will be way too expensive for Apple to make without some sort of remodelling and we all know that SE does not do remodelling.
The only cheap SE-style way for Apple to use a 5.7” screen would be using it with an old X or XS frame. Still would be way too much work for Apple, IMO, as opposed to simply reusing XR chassis as they were, adding more RAM, a new A-chip and pretty much calling it a day.
Put Touch ID in the power button, and give me the iPhone X form factor with a hole cutout for the camera...I'll be on it.

SE 8 Plus = 1080p LCD - yes please. Just say no to PWM.
I imagine it will the same as the XR. The whole purpose of the SE is for Apple to use up existing hardware. I can’t imagine they are going to make custom hardware for the new SE.
I feel like we're building too much hope of the next SE once again, think low-end/nothing special components except for an A15 or A16 chip.

$499 might be more likely. $599 seems to be Apple’s base price for an older model of the regular iPhone (nowadays, that’s the 13 mini and the 12).
$599 would also pretty much take the SE out of the midrange price segment, which may or may not be something Apple wants.
But, of course, we should never underestimate Apple’s ability to upcharge. The actual SE they release might be $599 without OLED.
The minis are what attracts the market that admires the iPhone mini.
I'm always surprised how little PWM is brought up in the iPhone discourse here, good to see other people with similar concerns & acknowledging there's still benefits with LCD displays even now.
By your logic why buy iPhone 14 when we can still buy iPhone 12. iPhone is not only the screen, so there will be quite a bit of a difference between a refreshed iPhone XR and iPhone 15. Advanced GPS, Dynamic Island, etc…
I wonder if Apple plans to use the SE for all the niche features people want? Touch ID, LCD screen, small size, relatively low price, etc. None of those features are mutually exclusive, and there are vocal subsets of people who want them, so it sort of makes sense (from Apple’s perspective) to lump them all together into one catch-all of a phone.
