Phil Schiller said the company has received more online orders for the new MacBook Pro so far than any previous-generation MacBook Pro.

What, more online orders than any other previous MBP ever? Yup, and I've got a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you.

More online orders than previous MBP's "opening weekend"? Yes, feasible considering:

- Previous MBPs have often been available in store shortly after launch day
- The last all-new rMBP launch was about 4 years ago. Since then, online shopping has increased in popularity
- People have been waiting for this launch for a year, their old Macs are on life support
- Maybe November (buy now for the holidays!) is a better time to launch than spring/summer.

Lets see what the sales are like after 6 months, when the more thoughtful customers have decided where to put their money, and 12 months when we see how many developers still find the Mac worth supporting.

Who knows... I mean, these machines are nice - the problem is the price (particularly at entry-level - people buying tricked-out 15" models may be less price-conscious) and the transition period to USB-C.

I connect my iphone frequently when my macbook is docked. I prefer to sync over wire and backup my phone. I don't own a new macbook pro I still have my 2015. However if I did get a new macbook I would just get the right cable and once again sync over wire. In the grand scheme of things this is something I will spend about two minutes thinking about and the rest of my time not worrying about my macbook or phone or Apple's decisions to change ports. Life is too short.

Now that's weak, If you have to reset your phone You need to cable connect to itunes to do it. I suspect more than you think have had to at one time or another reset an install of iOS, or maybe just maybe backup up their phone

Read it again. The article doesn't say they have received a record amount of pre-orders. It says there is a record amount of ONLINE orders. Since there are NO in-store sales, overall sales could very well be lower than past years, AND, no in-store sales only gives shoppers one place to buy! Which is why ONLINE sales are higher!
Right.

But they'll still be available to buy in-store.

I think it just shows that the general public are A. brand loyal, and B. not as interested in the technical aspects of computers/phones as the more vocal group of people who spend a lot of time on tech sites. My daughter uses her Apple products extensively in her work. I mostly use them for recreational use. But when I talk to her about the new products, she hasn't heard a word of what I am talking about. Yet, I'm certain she will stay with Apple computers and phones, and make them work for her, no matter what changes have been, or not been, made to the products.

No wonder. There are tradeoffs and design decisions that may put off someone, but they are fantastic machines, the best laptops money can buy, and pure Apple.

Expensive? Yes they are, but high will be the residual value. Those complaining about prices should really do their homework and compare depreciation ratios of Macs vs. PC.

No SD card slot, as you can use wireless transfers according to Phil Schiller. Obviously something he has never tried. Transferring say 1500 x 24 megapixel uncompressed DNG/RAW images (approx 45MB per image, totalling over 67GB) via wireless would take hours. I am not sure if the Satechi Thunderbolt 3 SD card reader is as fast as a built in card reader, connecting direct to the data bus but even so, it is another bit of junk to have to carry around and/or lose. How many retina MBP users haven't used the SD card slot? Not many is my guess. The SD slots were added to laptops for convenience, so we did not have to cart dongles around, the requirement for which has not gone away, in spite of Apple believing that the whole world only takes photos on iPhones. Most serious photographers have used Macs until now in preference to Windows machines. No SD card slot is a good way to discourage them.

The only real problem is the price. Drop the basic model to $1299 next year and I'm set.
Clearly there is no need for that and they won't do that. In 2017 you will see the real update: recent specs but same price (and then the price still won't make sense but people will have got used to it anyways).

"It’s [the touch screen] not as good or as intuitive as with a mouse and trackpad." Schiller

LOL, the touch screen IS the most intuitive tool out there, that is why iPads and iPhones are used by so many including non-tech generations.

Even more, it's amazing how Apple can figure out ways to pack crazy amounts of hardware into nearly impossible nooks and crannies, yet can't figure out a way to create a virtually flush-fit SD card slot like my Nikon cameras have used for YEARS, rather than the 'cumbersome' slot that leaves a card sticking 'halfway out'!

Well, why is it an sd card reader? most "pro" cameras actually use CF cards. Some use SD. If you shoot video/go pro/ drone, its micro SD. Personally, I shoot all 3.

In reality these devices need to have a USB-C/TB port that you just connect directly to your laptop. Then the memory format is not a factor.

Apple is obviously doomed and nobody is going to buy the new MBP's.

Would you give it up: people have been saying that for years and they're still around! At least say it with STONG arguments. I'm sick of the bad and non-constructive comments. And don't declare that nobody is buying the MBP: this article is saying the opposite!

FeBo obviously doesn't get sarcasm.

Everyone has different needs and wants, but for me, this is the best computer Apple has ever made. I love the weight; I love the battery life; I love the bright screen; I love the keyboard; I love the touch bar; I love how it looks.

I almost never connect anything to my computer, and when I do it's usually a lightning cable, so I'll have to buy a new usb-c lightning cable. I can't imagine anything that is a smaller problem than that. Also, I keep my computers for probably 4-5 years, so I'm very happy that the computer I buy now will work with usb-c cables as they become more popular.

Overall, for me, Apple could not have released a better computer.

I guess people aren't voting with their wallets.

You do notice he said "online orders"

And since that's the only way you can get it... online orders should be higher as there are no more line up at stores. So the true question that should be posed, are orders up?

And second, I feel that there are people like me, who skipped their normal upgrade cycle due to poor products upgrade cycles. So is this just demand that has been building up?

What is there market share like these days for laptops? Haven't they actually lost market share? I read that it depends on what you consider a laptop, and the Surface has been quite successful.
