I disagree completely.. Its one of the best arguments to keep USB ports, as there is no way to do factory restore or any kind of recovery with out plugging in to iTunes, keep an older laptop for this function is just plain ridicules..

What if you do have just that laptop and you need to do a full restore (your phone has iTunes logo on it) what are you supposed to do ? Go out to the store and buy a dongle ? Order it online and wait ? Removing USB ports while your other flagship devices are shipping with USB cables is just crazy ! Not even including a dongle to at least allow that is a slap in the face...

I`m really not understanding what is going on at Apple this days... They do things like this time to time, but not allowing 2 of there flagship devices to be connected together is not like them at all... I really do miss Steve Jobs, this would not be if he was around, no way we would need 4 different adapters to accomplish simple tasks....

I waited 4 years for this refresh only to want to jump ship now.... I guess back to hackintoshes it is...

Haven't read through all the comments yet, but you can back your phone up to iCloud. I don't have a personal laptop anymore, but can still do a full restore on my phone.

You know, it has built-in connectors for iPhones and other Apple products. They're just wireless. That's better, isn't it?
Yes an iPhone can connect to a Mac wirelessly, but it doesn't charge that way. To charge it up through your MacBook, you need a cable. And if you need to do significant transfers, you need a cable.

The superdrive still needs a USB A/B connector. And lots of people still use CD Roms / DVDs.

Just goes to show that even though many of us are disappointed with the direction Apple's hardware is going, they are making the right moves in terms of sales volume. IMO behind the times and now breaking out the gimmicks, yet they continue to break sales records year after year. Apparently I'm not the kind of customer they want anymore.

Astonishing how so many have their personal happiness so wrapped up around, of all things, Apple's numbers - clinging to hope they won't be good. People live for that, apparently needing to validate their views and self worth.

Jeeez... If you need a laptop and Apple makes one that meets your needs, purchase it. Otherwise, simply buy a Dell or a Sanyo or something and find some joy. And get back to having a life.

The relentless hand-wringing over numbers and what "pros" do is just sad and embarrassing.

And damn, some are still at it:

We have an 4 or 5 year old MacBook Air I wanted to replace with a 13" Pro. I had my hand hovering over the buy button during the launch. Now I'm browsing the refurbished selection of 2015s.

I won't say they lost a sale, but certainly I found the new releases utterly uninspiring to the point where I'd rather save a huge wad of cash and buy an essentially 2 year old machine.

Hey Phil the Shill Shiller show us the numbers.

He's adopting Tim Cook's policy of smoke and mirrors.

We're not going to tell you weekend sales of the iPhone 7, we're not going to tell you any sales figure for the Apple Watch, it's best to keep you in the dark, because otherwise we will have to embarrass ourselves with the low sales numbers.

I have my complaints about the new MacBook Pros, but moving out from my more narrow interests, they look stunning and are arguably the best laptops available. Price is the biggest issue. Looking at the range and depth of Windows laptops is an eye opener. There are options at every price point, and for pure hardware power for cost, they are hard to beat. But it is a bit of a maze of more commodity laptop options. And then there is Windows 10. It's OK, but MacOS has a lot of advantages to me (I use both, along with Linux daily). And I find that people get much longer productive use out of Macs than Windows PCs with generally fewer issues along the way. So if a person is willing to spend the $, these new MacsBook Pros look like very nice computers. And given how many years it took for Apple to update them, high initial demand is not surprising.

But I am still a little grumpy. I have my fingers crossed for a new mini-like Pro and updated iMac. But who knows with Apple these days.

I like telling a date to have courage to accept what I am willing to give. The rest of the evening is smooth sailing....

Clearly there is no need for that and they won't do that. In 2017 you will see the real update: recent specs but same price (and then the price still won't make sense but people will have got used to it anyways).

That's quite possible, but after discontinuing the Air they'll need a $999 laptop, so realistically the rMB12 should step down...

EDIT:
You can make the 2017 Keynote with those words...

We are very Excited, insert filler here, we have Great Product in the pipeline, and they are Magic,we are very Excited Apple has recieved more online order for "insert any Apple product here" than any previews generation™but today we announce the new insert any Apple product here" , It is twice as fast as the previews generation and this is our best "insert any Apple product here" ,We cannot wait to see what you / developers can do with it" we are very Excited.

And other 90 minutes of filler (aka how cool we are :D)

Don't forget the environmental checklist, it's a classic

So much fear about headphone jacks, dongles and RAM. Apple does it their own way and they understand salesmanship and how to market a product better than anyone. They are the leaders, the product to beat, the product to copy, and I bet right now engineers at the top PC laptop corporations are reverse engineering this marvel trying to figure out how Apple did it ... again. Remarkable success story sniped at by haters who eventually have to eat their words.

TO apple - I have been waiting over a year to buy the latest macbook pro, but changed my mind after your announcement. I am not buying until you reduce the price. I am not buying until I can connect my devices without dongles.....

Wait, what? What's in this generation of MacBooks that isn't already in the ultra-book sector?

Did not know they had wireless charging now. Or wireless backup. Learn something every day.
Can the iPhone only be charged through a Mac? I thought it comes with an AC adapter. I have Android and I never even connect it to any computers. You can buy powerbanks. They are cheap and so many nowadays.
iPhones can be backed up to iCloud by the way, in addition to iTunes sync via wifi as well.

The thread you linked here is amazing.

It's amazing how similar the arguments were back in 2008.

Thank you for this.

Interesting that there was never a huge outcry over needing an AC-to-USB adapter instead of just getting AC-to-Lightning built in. Apparently adapters are fine in some cases, but completely out-of-the-question in others.

Well, to be fair, it's not a MacBook Creative Pro, it's a MacBook Pro. And to imply that law students aren't professionals is pretty ridiculous.

Fair point - and it's clearly illustrates that Apple's focusing on non-creative audiences that have no need for high performance machines. If all you do is take notes, write documents and emails, the machine may be fine (assuming you can tolerate the keyboard).

Graphics designers, 3d modelers, CAD users, photographers, audio/video editors, technical sellers all are very different classes of users.

The net is that these are the 13 and 15 macbooks. The Macbook pro hasn't been a decent high-powered machine relative to the market since 2013.

Wait, what? What's in this generation of MacBooks that isn't already in the ultra-book sector?

Apple does it their own way. It's not a ecosystem for everybody and that's fine. Competition is essential in the declining PC industry. I've heard the criticisms before ... for years. Oh, an Android phone came up with that first! Windows had that feature in 2006! Those are irrelevant statements because Apple has a history of sizing up the available technology and making it their own design.
