All talk, all complaining, no real good or remotely good ideas. "Hey! Let's put USB A and USB C on the same device!" Have heard that so many times on this forum and it makes me nauseous. That is a TERRIBLE idea. That would be the point where Steve Jobs tells you to get out (censoring that A LOT) and go work for IBM. If you think that the laptops should have USB A and C on the same machine, you really don't get Apple's ideology.

Personally I think this new approach is the one Jobs would have cursed out. Replacing an entire interface long before it is even used just because someday it will be the standard is a poor approach to the problem. Even firewire was phased out slowly long after most firewire devices were old enough to be replaced. Just because USB-C is the future and is an awesome interface does not mean that all the USB-A devices out there are instantly useless and need to be be modernized. Especially at the rate in which Apple has been adopting new interfaces. I still don't own a single pure-Lightning device.

This new model should have been a stepping stone including both C and A and maybe on the next refresh drop the A.

I've used a mid 2010 17" for some time and was eagerly waiting for the new machines. I can get and appreciate all the new features and can even understand that USB-C is the future. But a 16gb limit on a pro machine on this day and age...come on. I rather have more RAM, and thus better performance, than one more hour of battery life. Don't make excuses. Don't blame others, you guys are brilliant and should have come up with a solution.

However, what really, really bothers me, a lot, is the fact that they eliminated the MagSafe connector.

Agreed on all counts. My company is on a 4 year laptop upgrade cycle. Last time around (Nov 2012), I got a 16GB rMBP. Looking at activity monitor, I'm currently using ~14.5 GB (multiple Linux VMs - I develop and support software for HPC systems). There is no way a 16GB machine will work for me as an upgrade. I can probably limp along for a year, but if I can't get at least 32GB from Apple by then I'll have to look elsewhere.

The MagSafe has saved my laptop more times than I can count.

The brighter screen would be nice. The faster SSD would be nice. More RAM, however, is a necessity (and using vi is going to be a PITA without a physical ESC key).

If this underpowered "upgrade" works for you, by all means buy one and enjoy it. It doesn't work for me.

I was just never too fond of the older USB style, I don't like non reversible cable designs much so I was very glad to see that design decision on their part. I mean really. Who wants this port on thier computer in 2016?

No thanks. This port style was introduced in , Yes 1994!!!!!! A bit dated? YES. Sure that means everyone has it everywhere, but it also means that it is incredibly dated and, surely enough, has a new version that is better.

This standard port was introduced way way before 1994, and you use it every day without even thinking about it because it is a universal standard (at least in the US). You can plug in your Mac at the airport, at the library, at Starbucks, at the gym, at home and a billion (yes billion) other US locations without any adapters. Every electrical item that needs this amperage and voltage is compatible and plugs right in. Imagine if every company making electrical appliances wanted to push their own proprietary standard or keep changing the standard ever few years......

I agree that the new ports will be better someday (its a new standard!!) but compatibility out of the box is nice too. Would it have been really THAT HARD for Apple to continue making something that extends compatiblility with a legacy of 100 million computer accessories still in use?

A lot of the blame should lie with intel.

This is just fantasy talk. It's about design choices. There's a whole army of Windows machines with Kaby Lake, or even quadcore kaby Lake in 2 months, in the same broad category.

Apple has shrunk the battery sized this generation. You can't make an argument about the battery drain of different CPUs or RAM when you've actively chosen to hack down your own battery size.

My guess is they are still putting the final touches on a Mac Pro redesign, plus waiting for a touchbar-enabled wireless keyboard to be ready before unveiling the iMac. Not sure how wise it is to delay your entire product line over one accessory, but that's the way Apple rolls.
Truth is, Intel hasn't given enough to make updating without new functionality worthwhile. Apple won't drop their margins just to sell more, and just bumping to a different Lake inside isn't compelling for the broader market.

People have mentally correlated time since last update with improvement since last update. The silicon alone isn't living upper to that anymore. If you've waited 3 years for a new Mac Pro and Geekbench says the new one is 12% faster, how happy will you really be? At this point the best Apple can do is make sure the new one at least can drive a 5k display with a single cable.

Are you serious?

Why would you, the industry, or anyone want to change that outlet? The US 120 VAC, 60 Hz standard which has been around since the early 1900s will be around for the next 100 (or more) years. Unlike computer I/O rates which will climb along with addition of new features (daisy chasing, power support, etc.) and will need new interfaces to support those changes.

Looks like there was a document indicating Kabylake processor for Workstation...hopefully Mac Pro.

a. dont care about it not being touch screen
b. bar is probably really cool
c. his answers and perception of reality is wrong.

For a company that was all about the user experience - releasing a new laptop and not including the appropriate usb-c to lightning connector - or not allowing for an iphone 7 cable trade-in program shows that they didnt think this through.

What most PRO probably care about
1. DDR4 32GB - yes, it requires a new architecture, but this is what people are expecting.
2. 8GB video option.

the investment to release a new mac book pro that supports DDR4 and 32GB is likely the reason for not doing it - giving consumers BS that it's uses more power and thats why apple chose not to do it is lame.

Hey Apple guys, if you read that, why would you make most of your customers happy with port customization. Same like you do with storage and RAM. Some need SD card reader build in, others 2 USB -A ports, others HDMI port etc. Offer 3-4 basic configurations and keep everyone happy. Lets face it: dongles are annoying and never there when you need one. And new Iphone not connecting with new MacBook - let's face it - it's not cool regardless how you try to sell it. Love you and hate you at the same time. Keep my $2000 in my pocket for now. Your loyal customer.

I posted this on another thread, I'm going to repost here again :

You know what would be REALLY "courageous" ?

It's if Apple steps up and just says "Look guys, the pro market is too niche and small for us now, so no more MacPros or high-end pro versions of our macs from now on. Thank you for your understanding"

That way, pro users would :
- Stop waiting endlessly for such machines.
- Stop complaining.
- Start preparing their transition towards a full PC/Windows environment. because such transition is very difficult to manage for a lot of pro users, it's not like you just go buy a PC at the store and start doing your spreadheets on Excell just like before. There is lot of research to do to choose the right PC hardware, with the right drivers for all the audio/video peripherals, getting new licenses for their expensive software , etc..

This can take months for some to accomplish, so the sooner people are fixed on what to expect from Apple, the better.

Now THAT would be courageous and honest from Apple.

Except it wouldn't because they are still charging pro prices for non-pro machines.

!00% agree with this. Apple has a responsibility to help its customers transition to new tech as well as pushing new standards like USB C. It has done a poor job here.

What? You have a direct AC-to-lightning cable? A direct AC-to-USB-C cable? Most portable electronics require adapters to plug into wall outlets. You're just more used to it.

Completely wrong analogy. USB B and USB C are one in the same, with one being reversible, more capable, and going out on a limb here - the future standard. It can do literally everything the old can. So why on earth would anyone want the old type connector other than backwards compatibility? Enlighten me?
Er... because I have a gazillion USB A devices and have no desire to have to plug a dongle in every time I want to use one! It was easy for Apple to make a transitional MB Pro that had USB A and C and it could have been out 6 months ago!

Why didn't the interviewer ask Phil about the lack of upgraded desktop Macs. That's so frustrating. I would like to know their reasoning for it. After all it was Phil who made the famous "cant innovate my ass" comment. The Mac Pro has not had a single upgrade since they released it 3 years ago.
I'll say about March we should know the deal.

These execs are either delusional or **** at marketing. But those are guys who order healing pyramids in the middle of an Apple event...so they don't care about reality.

Sounds like you got this all figured out.

So if business and customer loyalty is so easy, because of all the 'blind sheep' why are you not a billionaire businessman at this point?

If Apple can sell an overpriced, disappointing, terrible products, one after another, and your analysis is that the issue is 'blind sheep' then why don't you do it? Blind sheep will do anything, buy anything, no intelligent thought. You should be able to bilk them for billions if it is this easy.

Or maybe you completely oversimplifying the whole thing and just spouting?

'cos making a ton of money means you're producing a great product right?

And again this confirms that the delusional complainer on MacRumors forums has not much to do with the reality. I'm looking forward to my new 2016 15" and hope that Apple keeps up their excellent work in the future.

P.S. I'd too be surprised if I put literally the fastest available CPU and GPU (within reasonable thermal design spec) into my new laptop and then an angry mob tells me that I 'don't care about performance' :D

At least make them all quad cores and increase the standard HD sizes if you're going to charge so much dammit..
