Here's another video where the USB-C port is the focus for creating a podcasting setup.

Again, the cons are: updated software (most likely already in the pipeline) and mouse support (which we will probably know by June 2019, latest).

This guy gets it (typed from my 2018 iPad Pro).

Let me know when you can use Xcode on an iPad, or play a AAA gaming title on iPad. Until then, it is not a computer, it is a specialized tool for people who need to draw.

I agree that it’s not a computer, but I do enjoy playing Civ VI on my iPad from time to time. I consider that a AAA game.

Is your phone a camera? No, not without an SD card and a large assortment of expensive interchangeable lens.

Most people don’t need Xcode and torrents. Early “computers” had nothing that people are demanding of the iPad.

Can I use Cinema 4D, After Effects, Final Cut Pro and edit 4k 10bit footage on it though? Can I hook it up to a larger display to work more efficiently in those apps? Does it have a usable file system? Look forward to buying it for these reasons! Apple please don't make me return it!

Riiight. Because being able to use that specific collection of apps is the definition of “computer”.

I guess FCP alone rules out anything that runs Windows or Linux as computers.

And yes “USB-C for connecting to 4K displays”.

Sigh ...

You’re not really using the iPad. You’re using the Windows Server. The iPad is just your interface.

Would you buy a whole computer if that’s the only thing you do with it?

You missed the point. He’s talking about the fact that he can use the iPad to do the RDP session and doesn’t need a laptop to do that.

Add mouse support, better file support, and bring back the 3.5 mm jack to connect my expensive speakers and I'll replace my 8 year old windows I7 desktop with a 12.9 iPad Pro.

They won’t. Because you’re not their target market. So don’t.

Ideally, I'd like an iPad Pro and iMac. I had to compromise awhile back when my iMac died and go with just a laptop. I really don't do much on the go where I need a laptop.

Ditching the lightning connector and going with USB-C is a great step though. Having full-fledged hubs able to connect to the iPad is great.

However, I pretty much only do some simple video authoring and audio transcoding, and while capable, there is no true iTunes replacement on the iPad. I need a local media library, I don't do the cloud features with iTunes because things like play counts, smart playlists etc. aren't reliably when used with iCloud.

Fake News.

One major flaw in this whole "the iPad is a computer" pitch is that there is no accessible FILE SYSTEM... you know, files and folders that you can rename, move, organize and easily access from any app. And no, "Files" is not that.

Nerds like us need that. Normal people don’t even want it.

It’s not a flaw. It’s a use case. For the people it’s meant for (hint: not us) the iOS file management is perfect.

Can it open two Word documents at the same time? Still a no? Oh then it is not a computer nor a professional device. Pretty sure even people that use a computer casually will still need to open two Word documents at the same time at some point in their life.

Amazon fire HD 10 will be sold for $100 on black Friday.
I think I'll buy three(a replacement for me and two as gifts). Does everything I need from a tablet and has no wasted features for me.

What's an iPad?

While I love my Apple products, this is a very generalized statement. The vast majority of the computer using world has a reliance on the following features:

  • Mouse or touch pad support
  • Access to external storage

I use my iPad for a LOT more than I used to and I defer to it over my Macbook Pro most of the time, but when I need a mouse or higher accuracy I have to drag out my MBP or sit down where my Mac Mini is. I love to be able to stand at my kitchen counter type after opening up my iPad right next to my Magic mouse or touch pad and have it all just instantly work or having a touch pad built-into my iPad Smart Keyboard.

C'mon Apple!

looks like a a possible solution, but having a cable from my speakers to the ipad isn't an issue but would be if I were to replace desktop with a IPP. It is not like one would be getting rid of all wires switching to an iPad.

Why not?

Why shouldn’t you walk into a room with it and have everything in that room there and then connect to it wirelessly?

I think if you frequently need the Apple Pencil for art work and handwritten notes, then you might be willing to work around some of the iOS shortcomings to make the iPP your computer replacement.

On the other hand, if you are a more typical user that works heavily in documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, you might be hard pressed to pick an iPad Pro over a traditional computer. For base configurations, the iPP with keyboard folio and pencil costs about the same as the new MacBook Air.

I was at my favorite coffee shop today, and there were lots of students off for Thanksgiving break. I swear there were good old MacBook Airs everywhere. I think it will be hard to convince students on limited budgets to drop a grand on an iPP as a supplemental device. And, I seriously doubt these folks will give up their laptops for a tablet...especially with the current iOS limitations.

Apple will need to convince young people and students if they hope to move the iPad from supplemental device to laptop replacement.

I have my list why the iPad won’t replace a laptop.
1. iPad is app-based not file-based. You can’t do much about your file because that is not the focus. You can’t open multiple files. You can’t open most of the file types. You can’t even download from Safari because there is not place to download to. iCloud requires log in and you don’t want to log in on other people’s devices to transfer which leads to the next problem.
2. No way to move file to and from laptop quickly and massively. iCloud free tier is tiny. You can’t plug in ext hdd, thumb drive, etc. you must go through a complicated way just to move file in and out.
3. Multitasking. Even if you somehow can open various file types, you are still limited by how much are shown at a time. Two stuffs can be open side-by-side. And that’s not good enough. Copy and paste between them is like playing piano.
4. No freedom of open source stuff. Open source reference manager -> nope. Open source Python -> nope. Writing an article with LaTeX -> nope. Write mathematic equations and put them in document-> nope. You can’t do real work on it.
5. Tim wants it to replace a laptop and said iPad can replace it. Phill said they don’t put touch screen on Mac because of ergonomic. And suddenly we have iPad Pro with keyboard cover without trackpad. So now you must type and lift your hand up to touch. They have no clear vision.

This iPad is for Professionals, they’re not after students.

I have a bad feeling that Apple will someday force us to use something like an iPad as our desktop.

Again not FOR YOU. You are not everyone, your needs and wants are not everyone’s. If something doesn’t work for you, don’t use it. But lose the attitude it really tired.

Too many repetitions. Not for you, not for him, not for her, well have you got an actual point to contribute to the discussion? Are you the attitude police? What about your attitude?

So, you need a big bulky expensive dongle to access a small USB thumb drive or micro SD card reader. It also introduces troubleshooting variable with WIFI which isn't as bulletproof as direct connection. Just build that functionality into the iPad like any other modern computing device.
