It's not a computer. It doesn't even have the concept of files. It only knows about photos, and all photos are in a single directory, that's not a file system. It cannot read external drives. And real scanners are flat, therefore distortion free. The iPad's camera is wide angle, it'll never be a real scanner for paper. A real scanner can read 60 dual-sided pages a minute with auto-feed.

With the little love Apple has left for the Mac these days I can see it gone within 5 years. The iPad is a better profit generator for Apple. There might be a few people who still need the power of a PC and I am sure there will still be plenty of Windows PCs available if one is needed. Profit margin in the PC business is just not nearly as good as phones and tablets. Apple is smart moving their customers over to an iPad. Even if an iPad doesn't meet their needs they will still buy an iPhone even if they use a Windows PC.

Without mouse support ? NO EFFIN WAY ! Even though I'm holding last year's 10.5" Pro with 512GB and LTE, I would buy the new 2018 iPad Pro on day 1, but not gonna happen without bluetooth mouse support. I'm using it for Remote Desktop/VNC, so this is deal breaker for me.

's end game is NOT for you to replace your Mac with an iPad, but to own both. That's been the strategy since day one: sell more hardware.
The advertising they put out for an iPad replacing a Mac or PC is to try to sway non iPad users into buying one ..... (then only to find out down the line that iOS doesn't quite cut it).

I believe the new iPad Pro family was in the pipeline when Apple decided to refocus iOS 12 into a bug barbecue instead of adding new iPad features. iOS 13 might address functional limitation complaints. Perhaps just wishful thinking on my part, but iOS 13 may narrow the gap between iPad and laptop.

Does the iPad have support for a robust file system / download manager and the ability to use a mouse when required?

No?

Than it isn't going to replace a computer. Ever.

Uh... you do know that computers predate the mouse, right?

Once I can fully develop a native iOS app on iOS, without any need for macOS, then I will count iOS as an actual computer operating system. Until then, iOS is not a computer operating system, and so the iPad is not a computer.

That's really the only thing holding it back. Once a full blown Xcode runs on an iPad, I think we'll see JetBrains bring their IDEs over to compete. Once IntelliJ and Unity 3D are on it, I'll replace my computer with an iPad Pro.

Please for the love of everything holy. APPLE PLEASE enable external storage via USB-C .

I love my 11, but just having that feature (and maybe Mouse support) would make it a Laptop killer for many more than just myself.
Yeah, a true file system that allows external storage, mouse support. A way to import songs to itunes in ios without a computer. An option to use a desktop browser.

It's more powerful than most computers.

Marketing trickery. Most people don't realize that you cannot sustaion these magical speeds for very long, because without active cooling the CPU/SOC gets hotter and hotter until they reach their thermal threshhold, then it dramatically downlocks itself until temperatures go down. Yea, it's faster than a 3 year old core i3, for about 3 minutes, until it downclocks itself to the speed of a Casio watch.

It’s becoming shockingly boring how much Apple’s current business model really needs everybody into iOS, because of their service-focused strategies. I guess Xcode on iOS is already running in experimental stage within Apple HQs. I’m glad I’m getting everything ready to leave, I just bought a 2018 MBP but the Mac days are counted (if it survives it will be through an iOS-like jail where Apple controls everything, it won’t be a Mac anymore).

Hey I liked my Casio Watch.

I like to live off the grid too.
