For me, it has replaced my personal (non work) computer that I use for consumption. It has all my photos/videos, music library, TV/movie services, books, email, etc etc. I do not do any creative work on it. But because of my iPad I do not own a personal laptop, and I love the iPad form. I could never use it at work though barring a serious paradigm shift in the corporate IT world.

iPad is a beast in a cage, good at many things but not great in all of them. Specially not music production.

It's a great option for a lot of people. I don't think people need to look into it as deeply as they typically do. It's another computer in Apple's lineup, just like the iPhone, iMac, and Mac Pro. Choose the tool that works best for you. We don't need to list out all of the reasons why one or the other isn't good for you. Just buy what you prefer.

There are still so many things you cannot do at all with iOS or process of doing is so crippled you don't want to. Apple have all the means make it right but they won't because that would affect Mac sales.

Does the iPad have support for a robust file system / download manager and the ability to use a mouse when required?

No?

Than it isn't going to replace a computer. Ever.
Really?

It uses the same APFS as Macs do now. So, that's sounds like a VERY Robust Filesystem. You're just confusing a FileSystem with a Finder-like APPLICATION.

To use another platform as an example: NTFS is a FileSystem. Windows Explorer is a Finder-Like APPLICATION.

Big difference!

WTF is a "Download Manager?" That is ANOTHER APPLICATION (and I believe a Windows Application). There are File-Transfer Apps for iOS aplenty, and now there is a "Finder-Like" (albeit still somewhat weak) App included with the OS (Just like Finder is included in macOS).

Name three things you can do with a mouse that you can't do with a touchscreen and a finger or pencil?

Selection? Check!

Object-Movement (dragging)? Check!

Resizing? Check!

Drawing? Check!

Hovering? Well, you (sorta) got me there... But that's just the screen's limitation. Old School graphics tablets (digitizers) did "hovering" DECADES ago!

So, in a PRACTICAL sense, what REALLY can a mouse do that a touch interface with multi-finger and Stylus input can't? Seriously.

And "Ever" is a Long, Long, LONG time! Hope you find those words tasty...

Yup. Right now, it is a good companion, not a replacement.

Again that is YOUR needs and your wants. Not everyone wants to code, not everyone feels the need to be able to rename and move around their files. Not everyone insists they have to be able to use a mouse. If that’s your desires, go get your fraking laptop and enjoy yourself. But drop the nonsense that everyone has to be like you.
Sure, renaming picture file IMG_2356.jpg to something else and putting it in a subfolder is a foreign concept that nobody ever uses.

If only this claptrap was true. The iPad will never replace a laptop or a desktop
First of all, "never" is a long time. iPad Pro is already way ahead of what it used to be and replaces tons of functions possible on a laptop/desktop.

What you meant to say was that iPad Pro is still not a replacement for certain users in certain use cases.

For many, an iPad already replaces most of their computing needs.

This really seems to fit the definition of "Shill".

  1. Power is irrelevant without the ability to perform the tasks that you need done. A MBA is not powerful but you can do a lot with it.
  2. Who buys a computer to function as a scanner? This seem moot.
  3. My MBP goes everywhere thanks to my iPhone and hotspot. LTE is a convenience. You can't do anything new with it.
  4. Gestures alone don't really mean much... What can DO with them?
  5. For a computer replacement, I'd take a mouse over a pencil any day. Pencils have been around for 20 years, every computer has a mouse, few have pencils.

My Points would be:
  • There is no mouse support for fast precise movements.
  • No Xcode development
  • There is no support for storage devices
  • Moving data from application to application is not easy
  • No multi-user support
  • You really can't run multi applications at once (Or in the background)
  • Can you write application optimized for traditional displays yet?
For a few people, sure, an iPad can replace a Mac. Generally speaking, it's not even close. I do think that it will ONE DAY be a replacement, you can see Apple positioning it to do so. My opinion is that we are still at least a year or two year away.

Wait...if this were a car it...nah, wait, if this were an alternative universe...wait, I'm out of arguments. I love my iPad 12.9;) anyway.

Please for the love of everything holy. APPLE PLEASE enable external storage via USB-C .

I love my 11, but just having that feature (and maybe Mouse support) would make it a Laptop killer for many more than just myself.
I'm with you on that one!

Does iOS have enough file-control to connect to and use an APFS or HFS+ network device?
